Courage isn’t about not being afraid. It’s about finding the courage to do something even though you are terrified. It is about defending something or someone you care about.

The author, at four-and-a-half years old, was sent off to a local day care center every day. She would play outside for a few hours, but would return home to her empty house. She would occupy her time by imagining herself as a different person, usually a princess.

The author, Jane Wurw, has realized that her main reason for spending that hour in a fully developed princess fantasy was to distract herself from the overwhelming feelings of dread and fear and loneliness that would come over her.

Fear can be a great motivator, and can be utilized as a tool to alert us to danger, or as a gift that helps us survive.

The process of picking up the lessons in each room is what helps us become more secure. It is important to experience the good and the bad so that we can recognize it the next time it happens, and learn from it.
