INTRODUCTION
Move
/mo͞ov/
verb
1. go or make something go in a particular direction or way.
2. change or make something change position.
noun
2. an action taken toward achieving a purpose. ¹
In short, the process to move entails taking the very wired pathway that makes you uniquely you and putting action to it. Everyone has the same wiring by genetic makeup in theory, but not everyone has the same wiring capacity and ability. Not everyone has the firing rate process down. This process must be mentally examined before any movement can occur.
Now, I’m not saying that in every situation you must dwell on the process forever, especially in terms of rapid and extreme measures (i.e., fight or flight), but I am saying that you must make up your mind to move and then move with fire, without any apprehension or hesitation. This is the firing rate! This decision is wrapped in an integral term called alignment.
Before any kind of movement, there must be alignment. There must be an instant flow of communication that signals the aforementioned wiring and, as a result, the moving. Your decision to move must be in alignment relative to your thinking so that there is effective movement. This alignment is key to moving in function and moving in efficiency. The last thing anyone wants to encounter is a move that falls short of potential, and we all know that potential means nothing until it becomes kinetic.
Let me unpack that really fast. You can have all of the potential in the world, but nothing happens with that potential until it is acted upon. Nothing happens without movement. No achievement, great or small, is attained without moving. Your alignment, therefore, is pivotal for your capacity and your efficiency. When you are out of alignment, your movement is not conducive to your growth. Instead, it is a contradiction to your functionality.
One foundational principle that my mentor, brother, and friend, Loren Landow, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Denver Broncos, emphasizes with high priority is, Joint position dictates muscle function.
This is alignment! I’ve seen this principle in action, and it couldn’t be more true. This is the notion that everything must be aligned properly before moving and producing great force. In the context of sports performance, in which I was blessed and privileged to coach and experience for the past 8 years, this means that I cannot produce great force in any direction if my supporting framework is out of alignment or out of place. Even with the framework out of place, movement can occur, but it can be even more forceful and impactful when alignment is in proper placement. These are practical concepts that I’ve been able to learn and study in movement and apply in all aspects of life. This is where the principle stressed by Loren became more than just coaching and sports performance for me, it became life. In order to be a solution to your legacy, your concepts must be realized, aligned, and acted upon for true efficiency. We will explore more of these concepts
