    Chapter 1

    EVE WIFE OF ADAM

    The First Wife

And Adam said: This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.
    (Genesis 2:23)

    COMMENTARY

"It was awesome! Make no mistake, the environment was delightful: luscious fruits, healthy greens, exquisite flowers of unusual colors and design, birds of distinction flying in the air, insects and animals all rejoicing with each other. Even the fish in the sea were creating moments of joy as they explored their new home. Thorns and thistles were friendly agents. Tigers and lambs enjoyed each other’s company. Everything portrayed beauty, splendor, and purity. It was truly a perfect environment—a paradise of love, happiness, and harmony.

But something happened. That tree in the middle of the garden magnetized me. It was the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God forbade us to eat of it. If we did, we would surely die. I wrestled with this thought—die? What does it mean? I had never heard about this before. It frightened me because it did not sound like a good word. I dared not touch that tree.

However, I kept wondering, What is so special about this tree? Then one day curiosity overtook me.

While I was gazing at the tree, serpent appeared—utterly attractive and cunningly beguiling. He convinced me that if I ate of the fruit of that tree I would not die. This was good news to me. I did not like that dying thing anyway. Here was serpent, saying that I would not die, and I believed him. I wanted, if nothing else, to taste it. Just a small taste. A battle began to rage inside of me. One voice said, Don’t do it, Eve; God said not to, but serpent continued to say, If you eat of the tree you can become like God. Excitement filled my soul. An urgent desire came over me—I would do anything to become like God. I would give it a try. Even though something kept warning me not to do it, I reached out my hand, and picked the fruit, ate it, then gave Adam a bite.

Immediately, a differentness came over us. As we looked at each other we noticed that we were completely naked. Oh, God, I cried, what have I done!

I had never experienced these feelings before—self-hatred, terror, embarrassment—all coupled together. They drove me to cover my shame, and the only covering I could resort to was made from the leaves of a fig tree.

And then we heard His voice—the once welcome voice we had heard over and over again with joy. But now I cringed with guilt and embarrassment. How can I look into His face? I painfully thought. His voice was piercing and direct. Adam! Where are you? What have you done, Adam?

My chest heaved and my whole body trembled from hearing His voice. Tears filled my eyes and flowed like waterfalls down my cheeks. And then He continued.

Who told you that you were naked, Adam? Ah, yes, He knew what we had done—disobeyed Him, rejected His will for a lesser one. I longed to hide from His face, to retreat from this terrible situation. But there was no escape, no calling back. No wish or prayer would put us back on track.

As I stood helpless, guilty, and filthy—a total failure—sadness filled my soul. I shook at the pronouncement of judgment: no more of His presence, which brought thrilling joy and comfort. I had sinned, and by so doing had thrown the entire world (generation after generation) into the abyss of sin. Alas, we had to leave that Paradise of love and perfection to struggle with a world of turmoil, misery, crime, hatred, jealousy, and disobedience. What a sad, dreadful day! The curse of sin had entered our hearts and entered into this beautiful world. What a fool I was to listen to the voice of the deceiver, and what a price I had to pay for my disobedience.

Yes, I am the mother of all the living, the first wife in human history. Eve is my name."

    CONSIDER . . . EVE’S DESIGN

Eve was the only custom-built woman and wife. She was handcrafted by God Himself, tailor-made and shaped by the greatest Artist of all ages. With care and precision, He painstakingly designed her curves and angles and molded her with exquisite beauty and grace. She was a masterpiece! No other woman in the history of womankind has ever had such beauty and design. Even though women of today are trying hard to regain the beauty of the original, they will never again regain such beauty and attraction. No wonder when Adam opened his eyes and saw his bride he exclaimed with delight, You are mine!

Eve’s femaleness and design were to complement Adam’s maleness. Adam was strong and muscular, while Eve was the weaker sex, tender and delicate. She was created for the glory of Adam, to honor him and give him the respect and love that is fit for a husband. A husband who is not respected by his wife is low in self-esteem and self-worth. A man must know that he has a wife who adores him, who honors him, who delights to serve him and please him. With the benefits of this kind of attitude showered upon him, he can be free to conquer the world and accomplish great things.

Adam and Eve were also created for a relationship, to be true husband and wife, experiencing true intimacy in the beauty of Paradise. They were created for companionship and communication, sharing their sinless experiences and adventures as they moved together in love and happiness.

Eve was not created to face a world of contempt and anger, nor was she designed to live a life of sorrow and disappointment. She was given the emotions of love, joy, and contentment. God designed her to be a helpmeet to Adam, for them to enjoy working and fellowshipping in the intimacy of love. This was supposed to be passed on to other couples in the generations to come, but Eve blew it! She destroyed God’s plan of perfect love and perfect fellowship, and, because of this, today many couples have a tough time making their marriages work.

Adam was given the responsibility of protecting and providing for Eve, of loving her as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for her (Ephesians 5:25). He was to endeavor to make her happy, to bring good into her life and find ways to help her achieve full expression of her gifts and creativity. He was to cherish and treasure Eve, just as Christ treasures the Church—not to boss her, or take advantage of her or be rude to her, because his love for her was to be unconditional, forgiving, and everlasting.

Dear Wife: Have you recently considered your attitude toward your husband? Is it one of love, respect, and honor? Of caring for him and pleasing him in whatever you do? Perhaps it is time for you to take inventory of your wifely responsibilities so that you can have a greater understanding of where your weaknesses lie, and thereby, seek to improve them.

    EVE’S DESTRUCTION

Adam and Eve came face to face with Satan in a battle to determine the divine will of God in their lives. What destroyed them was not merely eating the forbidden fruit, it was blatantly disobeying the word of God and accepting Satan’s words over God’s word. They placed their own will above God’s will.
