Chapter One

Beep, beep, beep ... Good morning, baby, time to get out of bed, echoed the alarm. Morris turned over, staring into the ceiling. His bedroom, kept dark most of the time, bore a speck of light coming from the adjacent bathroom. Wow, it can’t be six o’clock already. " I just fell asleep , thought Morris, as he reached over to silence the alarm. He rose and sat at the edge of his platform bed; his slippers, in salute, patiently wait for his arrival. He stood, greeting a full-length mirror, admiring and inspecting his muscular facade. Flex, play my Blues Funk, he demanded. Okay, playing Blues Funk, responds his virtual personal assistant. He was never one for waking up early, but today he has to make an exception for the scheduled meeting at eight o’clock with the president of the law firm. The firm is a huge accomplishment for him, thanks to Ebonee, his girlfriend of five and a half years. They met in college at a study hall session during his junior year; Ebonee was six months away from graduation. They both encountered the love at first sight" experience and became inseparable. Ebonee’s stepdad, James Ingles, is a longtime partner with Myles and Miles Law firm, so getting Morris in was a breeze. Although he hasn’t reached his financial desires, he is honored to be a part of the city’s most prestigious law firm. Working with Mr. Ingles on many high-profile cases has brought the law firm a lot of attention and substantial financial growth. So, Morris is eager to see what’s next on the table, considering it is unorthodox to schedule a board meeting at the last minute.

Morris prides himself on being a heedful organizer. Every situation and detail of his life requires planning, and there is no room for the unexpected. Coffee pot off, check; iron unplugged, check; clothes for dry cleaners, check; all the mental notes in his head while proceeding to the front door. After locking the door, Morris made his routine morning call to Ebonee. Good morning, Sunshine, Morris states while walking into his apartment elevator. Good morning, baby, Ebonee responds, How was your night? Could have been much better if the love of my life would have shared it with me, states Morris. Baby, come on, we have been over this before, she reminds, My parents would die from the thought of us shacking before marriage. Morris rolled his eyes while recalling the prior conversation of them not being able to live together until marriage. I know, I know… what would the church think, right? Ebonee sighed, Baby, that’s not fair. You know this is just as important to my image. Yeah, I know, stated Morris, but that still doesn’t keep a man from dreaming. Well, I have a few dreams of my own, Mr. Jeffers, and I would love to role play one of them for you during your lunch break. I mean, if you are available, she inquired. Anything for you, Mrs. Jeffers. I will see you at noon, he responds. Same time, same place, smiled Ebonee. Yes, baby, I will see you then, stated Morris. Oh wait, said Ebonee. How was the business meeting with your client last night? "Yeah, let’s discuss that later. We have a board meeting scheduled for this morning, and I can’t be late. I Love You, he replied. Okay, Love You More," she proclaimed. Morris adjusted his tie and ended his call as he walked up the steps to the building.

Once inside, he is met by Jason, his co-worker and friend since childhood. What up, kid, says Jason, as he presses eleven on the elevators. Another wild night? Morris bashfully shook his head, affirming, as they stepped on the elevator lift. As soon as they were in, Morris noticed a familiar female standing in the corner. Is that Melanie?, he thought to himself? Before reaching his floor, the elevator stopped on the fifth floor. The lady says, Excuse me, and walks off. "Yes, that is Melanie, he confirmed. Jason, picking up on the confused look, said, Another one of your honey’s? Morris replied, That was over two years ago, yet the thought of Why, she is here," lingered on.

Good morning, everyone, says Mr. Bosley, head attorney for Myles and Miles. I would like to thank everyone for attending this meeting on short notice. After a brief pause, Mr. Bosley sadly exhaled and spoke. There are allegations that one of our top law partners is misusing funds for personal financial growth and is possibly involved in a scheme to steal from the firm. As you all know, I am committed to upholding this company’s integrity and will stop at no end to bring down anyone who jeopardies what we all have worked so hard to build. Considering these allegations, I will hold a meeting today at one o’clock with Mr. James Ingles, the individual accused of submitting such acts. At this time, Mr. Ingles is unaware of these allegations, so any actions to caution or ready him, before our meeting, will bring about prompt termination with the firm. Do we, as a whole, comprehend, express Mr. Bosley? Yes, '' answered everyone in unison. Until further notice, all clients overseen by Mr. Ingles will be under the direction of Morris Jeffers; from this point forward. I have faith in Mr. Jeffers and his ability to assist these clients most professionally; congratulations. Thank you, sir," replied Morris. A sudden form of guilt formed inside me as I thought about my lunch date with Ebonee. How could I even be around her knowing what I know, and now what should have been incredible news to share, would be devastation on some many levels?

Ebonee is one of those Fed with a silver spoon types. Her jet black, waist-length hair, and French tip manicured nails accentuate her beauty.
