    About the Author,

    Chapter One

    Life! Sometimes it stinks. Oh there are days that I totally enjoy life, but there are days and moments that I wish would just stop—like right before I enter into my first period English class. Most of the students here at Slim Pickens are cool, but a few girls are just totally (let me say this with a little class) beautiful on the outside but rotten as a twenty-day-old egg that sat in the sun and festered for a few years on the inside! said Bobbi.

    * * *

    The leader of the pack was Jessie; she’d had a nanny all of her life, ever since her mom ran off with some guy she met on the Internet. So not cool! If I threw that in her face, I would be just like Jessie. Jessie puts people down to keep others from talking about what’s not right in her life.

    Just as I turned the corner to go into my English class, I bumped into none other than Jessie and her followers.

    Well, well what do we have here? Could it be Bob, short for Bobbi? said Jessie.

    I glared into her eyes and, without saying a word, she moved onto her next victim before the bell rang.

    I let out a sigh of relief. Why did she do that? I had given her that same look for three years, and she still liked making me feel like I was two feet tall. One day, just one day, I was going to put a stop to her making me feel … feel sad!

    Out of nowhere, Spam appeared. Yeah, I know he had a tech name, but his full name was Spamaid Kallis Frost. So we called him Spam. He was a tall fella; he stood about six feet tall and was in the eleventh grade. We wondered why he didn’t play basketball.

    I would ask, Spam, why don’t you play basketball?

    Spam would reply, Why? If the goal was eight feet high, who would ever get the ball? He could be so funny sometimes.

    Spam would tell me I had the hippest lips in America. I just laughed at him. I knew that the only person who had ever kissed him was his mama.

    I was so glad that Spam and I had classes together all day. He made me smile, while the others laughed at me. What was so different about me? What stood out so much that it made Jessie the lead Jerkette make me feel the way I did?

    The last bell of the day rang! It was Friday, and all was well. I felt so good inside that I jumped off the top step onto the sidewalk landing, soaring though the air and thinking for a split second that I was a bird and free to just be me. But that all changed just as soon as I landed. Jessie and the Jerkettes were walking to the parking lot. Jessie started to clap, and of course her Jerkettes followed suit.

    Well, well, well, said Jessie, if it isn’t the flying bobblehead! Not only is she a freaky geek, she is also a flying bobblehead.

    Laughter erupted.

    I didn’t know whether to run or just stay there and take the abuse. So I did what I normally did to Jessie. I just stared into her eyes.

    And like clockwork, she said, Let’s go, girls. We have more important things to do.

    As the group of girls walked away, the only thing I could think was that, if there was anything I could do to put an end to this, I would. Uggggh!

    From out of nowhere, a voice said, I know exactly how you feel.

    I turned around, and there stood a young lady. She looked to be in her late twenties.

    She said, My name is Lanni. I was one of the best debaters Slim Pickens High ever had. Back then, it was hard to defend yourself when it seemed like the whole world was looking at every single move you made. I was on top of the world, and yet I felt like I was covered with dirt from the ground. It has affected me oh so much. My self-esteem was gone, my family didn’t understand my behavior, and my teachers labeled me as ‘astute yet complicated.’ So you see; I know how you feel.

    I asked Lanni, What did you do? I mean, how do you stop someone from making people feel worthless?

    Your best means for a defense is to talk to somebody that you trust, Lanni told me. Most importantly, the person you confide in needs not to look like the bullies that you really want to hurt but can’t. Do you have anybody who you can talk to?

    I thought for a while. Yes there is my Auntie Lorene. She is not only a nice person but she was also the geek of her time, and now she is a successful federal investigator. Yeah thanks, Lanni. I feel better already.

    Lanni extended her right hand, and she had something in it. It looked like a business card, and it read, Lanni G. Wish, esq.; Attorney at Law; 222 Wishbone Avenue, Washington, DC.

    I walked home, thinking about one question the whole time. Would I let those people ruin my weekend? Or would I regroup and think about how to set them straight? Lanni had given me a lot to think about.

    * * *

    It was Saturday morning, and I was able to sleep last night. Just as I woke up, I heard a TV commercial from the family room. I had heard that commercial a thousand times. Then I heard the voice; it was Lanni Wish, the woman who had stopped and spoken to me yesterday.

    I jumped up and ran almost knocking Mom over.

    Bobbi! What has gotten into you? You have never been interested in a TV commercial.

    Ma, I know her! I replied, pointing at Lanni on the screen. She sort of came to my defense yesterday when a group of girls were making fun of me.

    What? said mom.

    I stopped because my mother grabbed me by my wrist. Bobbi, how long has this been going on?

    Ma, I can handle it. I got this! I insisted.

    No, Bobbi Elane Thomas, you sit down and tell me what is going on? How long have you had to deal with this?

    Ma, it’s been going on ever since we moved here. You moved me from a school where I thrived and fit in without a problem.

    "Bobbi I
