    The troll’s fist scores a hit to my jaw, and I taste blood. I stagger back a couple of steps, nearly tripping over a plush pink ottoman.

    The room is pretty fancy by Neighborhood standards. Two matching cream-colored couches face each other in front of a marble fireplace. On this hot summer night the fireplace sits empty and black. A low cherry coffee table sits between the couches, with a silver coffee service on it and a plate of spice cookies.

    I notice this in a flash while I’m circling around the troll and trying to keep from getting my face pounded in.

    I duck the troll’s next blow and tackle him, sending us both crashing to a fairy-woven silver and blue rug covering the oak floor. I drive a hard right to the troll’s temple and he blinks, momentarily stunned.

    I scramble to my feet and kick him in the jaw. His huge yellow eyes roll up into his head and he goes limp.

    I’m wiping blood from the corner of my mouth when the elf standing near the fireplace shouts a word of magic and points at me.

    I try to dodge but it’s too late. The spell hits me in the chest and an icy coldness spreads throughout my body. I gasp, hand on my chest,
