Kalinda tried to match her mother’s perfect landing on the second floor windowsill of the frame house. Of course, she didn’t. Unlike her parent, she only got one foot on the sill, the other on the sloped roof. Her blue silk slipper skidded on the slick shingle and she might have slid all the way to the edge if her mother hadn’t grabbed her arm.
Pay attention!
her mother whispered.
I was!
Kalinda answered, a little more loudly. The window was still closed, so she doubted the human child could hear them even if they shouted. But her mother was big on being careful. Not being seen by the humans
was apparently the number one rule in the job of being the Tooth Fairy, and it was a rule that Kalinda had quoted to her at least three times each night she went with her mother on a job.
With a disapproving glare, Kalinda’s mom brandished her wand.
