Government contracted pig shooters.
Licenced to keep the ferals in order. Foxes, pigs, rabbits anything that are getting out of control, but mainly we take care of pigs.
Sometimes four or five a week. We, my uncle and I along with an old friend, we take care of all the country; west and northwest of the big river. Another couple of shooters take care of the other side of the river. They don’t bother us, we don’t cross over to their areas.
Every year or two we need to go to the big smoke CITY
and renew our contracts and gun licences. Maybe buy something new to shoot with. I still have my granddad’s 303 and my dad’s 45/70 we don’t shoot with them, doesn’t leave much to pick up.
My dad died a year and a half back, he was called on by the government to do some work for them, non-military, totally black, whatever the fuck that meant? He liked it, the money was good and all, but for this time he never came back. It took us eight months to find out where he had gone and retrieve his remains and bring him home and be buried at the old homestead. After a short while with him in our thoughts, we went back to work.
Firstly we must go to the city to take care of a few things. New contracts and gun licences are required.
So our journey begins…
THE YEAR EARLY TO MID 70S. SOME RULES WERE NOT IN PLACE YET.
DRAGON BLUE
Why Dragon Blue? Well my uncle follows the dragons, me, I just love the blues.
They call me the boy, along with Uncle Jack.
We have a government contract to hunt wild pigs and any other nuisance in the area.
Also working the area with his own contract is Billy. A retired army pilot, flies choppers on his own. He procured the chopper from the government to help us get to the areas that the Ute or Truck can’t.
We’ve just been down to the big smoke to renew our contracts and gun licences, to hunt the area. Plus we needed some more ammunition and a new long rifle.
We are replacing the ageing rifles that we have.
10 hour trip home, best part of that, just getting out of the bloody city.
THE RAT RACE YOU CAN HAVE IT…
GIVE ME THE BUSH ANY OLD TIME…
Friday night just arrived home, my uncle and I stoked up the fireplace and got the joint warmed up. We also picked up some cheap grog while down there, and put them in the fridge for the weekend.
It’s going to be cold tonight.
Billy drops in and says that there have been some strangers looking for us.
"Told them you were down the big smoke, they stayed at the pub.
They had the room next to me funnily enough. I heard everything they had to say.
They will be up later today. I’m going down the valley to get some pigs."
Billy I got this in town, ‘my new rifle’, try a few rounds and let me know if it needs any fine tuning.
OK.
Billy put my new rifle up in the rack in his Ute and drove down they valley.
Just as he does, a vehicle pulls up at the main gate. Someone gets out to open the gate. I yell down don’t open that and then an army uniform hops out.
I could see two suits in the back of the vehicle. I yelled down that the uniform can approach, no one else. The young bloke was heard saying fuck you and starts to open the gate.
I had couple of tins sitting on the fence for targets and I fire three rounds taking three cans off the fence.
The gate shuts and the uniform starts to make his way up to the house.
As he gets closer, we could see that he was dad’s old mate from earlier days in the forces.
He comes onto to the veranda and we offer him a little something to drink.
Yeah, why not. Nice shooting.
You able to talk to your friends?
Yeah, why?
Tell that boofhead to stay with car, wild pigs around.
So he does.
Fucking suits can’t be trusted anywhere, or anytime.
What brings you up this way Bob.
You’ve been away.
Yeah down the big smoke, had to get new contracts for the pigs and pick up new rifle.
What did you get?
"A nice one,
