    PREFACE

I have been an athlete most of my life and one of the secrets to my success has been training in the water. I have used aquatic training to help increase speed, strength, coordination, and overall endurance – all the skills needed to become a professional ice hockey player. While growing up, I watched many professional and Olympic athletes share their training regimens in the water and how it benefited them in relation to fine-tuning various skills. Throughout my career, I experienced a plethora of injuries of varying intensities and recovery times. However, in each instance, aquatic therapy accelerated my healing times and helped manage the usual stages of grief associated when we as humans experience devastating injuries. In short, I not only was healing physically but mentally and emotionally. There have been numerous research studies on how exercising in the water translates to stress management, relaxation, and emotional stability. I am highly passionate about this topic, as it has transformed me from periods of partial paralysis to a permanent transformation of limitless possibilities in relation to functional mobility and thriving in life.

I have dedicated the past thirty years of my life to the comprehensive well-being of others, and aquatic therapy has been one of my main go-to holistic interventions that have facilitated permanent benefits. The feeling that I have when one of my patients communicates that for the first time in an exceedingly long time, they have hope. For me, it is one of the best gifts that you can help to provide for someone because it is achieved via continued support, encouragement, and specialized knowledge correlating to self-empowerment that can last forever. It truly is amazing to see the positive results that seem to occur rapidly versus traditional land training.

This is a biblical principle, Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime (Matthew 4:19).

There are a multitude of healthcare and fitness professionals who usually choose to only provide treatment without education – it is less effort and time. Quick question: does that level of interaction produce optimal results, or does it contribute to people being dependent like a drug addict who needs his next hit from his drug dealer? Conversely, teaching one to fish takes more effort and time, but long-term advancement, independence, and growth is inevitable. Exercising and training in the water is ideal for anyone who experiences acute or chronic ailments, and over time, has regressed in his or her abilities to literally move. I spoke to a gentleman who was in the Air Force and was an avid runner. Unfortunately, as he aged, he was able to do less and less each decade that he was alive, from running to fast walking, to walking, to using a cane, to only being able to walk and exercise safely in the pool. It breaks my heart because if he addressed the minor ailments prior to them becoming larger ailments, the probability of suffering from limited functional mobility would be significantly less. Water provides us with neurological support, as it has the capacity to hug us and sends messages to our brains, letting the command center know that it is ok to move. Then it ignites a positive exchange of information which changes the abnormal compensatory patterns into normal healthy patterns that help us heal, fueling homeostasis and balance. There have been so many mentors in my life that have been there for me during the most challenging times. The first person that I would like to thank is God Almighty, my Pappa in Heaven. Because of His unlimited
