Chapter One
Willow gripped the phone in one hand as she continued to pack her clothing. She was so glad Meg, her friend and soul sister, had finally called her. She had started to get worried when she hadn’t heard from her, and she hadn’t answered her phone when Willow called.
Willow was surprised when Meg talked about this biker she’d met, some guy she was staying with. She’d never heard that affectionate tone in Meg’s voice before, and she didn’t know how she felt about it.
Is this club you’re with going to let us both stay there for a while? Because you don’t know them well enough to predict what they’ll do,
Willow said into the phone.
She cringed when she heard Meg scream in anger and then start to argue with someone.
Who the fuck is this?
he asked.
Willow was startled by the deep masculine voice. Oh … um … Willow. My name is Willow. Is this Feral?
Yeah.
Meg’s told me about you. Hey, the way she’s talking about you, I really think she could care about you, so if that’s not what you want, don’t string her along. She’s had enough pain in her life.
Who are you to Meg?
We call each other sisters, but were not blood. We grew up in foster care together. Hasn’t she told you any of this?
No. But she’s only been here a few days,
he said.
Hell, it would take longer than a few days to get Meg to open up. They hardly ever talked about their childhoods. There was no reason to. It was in the past. She will when she’s ready. It’s hard for her to open up.
I’ll get the story. I heard her talk about you coming here.
She told him about getting away from Nick and how the guy was a threat to Meg. Willow also told Feral about the things the guy had done to Meg. She was shocked Meg hadn’t at least told him about the guy.
Oh, she’ll be telling me all of it all right. When do you think you’ll be in town?
If all goes well, three days.
If you have any problems, call me, and I’ll send someone for you.
She felt better having his number. I’d appreciate that. Take care of her and tell her to call me later.
I will. Stay safe.
You betcha,
she said.
She hung up the phone and continued to pack. She had the kitchen and living room packed already. Now she just needed her personal items and clothes.
She grinned when she heard two of her buddies, guys she worked with at a warehouse, argue over a game. She was going to miss all of them. They had treated her like a sister from the start and were protective. Even though the job at the warehouse was boring, she really liked most of the people she worked with, and she made decent money.
That was why she’d stayed behind when Meg had left. If she didn’t finish out the week, the main boss who was never around wouldn’t give her a check, and they desperately needed as much money as they could get their hands on, especially since they had no idea how far Nick would go to get to Meg.
Damn, she hated that fucker. She wished she could get her hands on the guy. She’d rip his balls off and shove them down his throat. The fact that he was disrupting their lives to this extent made her madder.
Willow tried to think logically. They had planned to move to a different state for years. Nick, the butthead, had just pushed them to do it sooner.
It hadn’t been two minutes before she heard a huge crash from the living room and raced out to see what was going on. She pressed a hand to her mouth when she saw one of her friends, Brad, in a vicious fight with the bastard Nick.
She looked over to another friend, Jerald, to see him on the phone with the police.
Then she grabbed the first thing she got her hands on and tried to get in a good hit, but they were all over the floor. You fucker,
she yelled.
She was so glad when she heard sirens, but then she watched in horror as Nick brought a knife out and stabbed Brad in the shoulder.
She couldn’t get to Nick in time and screamed in fury.
Nick scrambled away and looked at her as he panted. I’ll find you whores. Just wait.
He ran out the door, and as much as she wanted to run after him, she had Brad to take care of. After she reached for a towel, she pressed it down on his shoulder. She hated to see the pain in her friend’s face, and it made her even angrier.
Just relax, buddy.
She looked at Jerald, who stood off to the side in shock. Hey, call for an ambulance.
I already did.
She continued to put pressure on the wound as the cops filed in. Within another few minutes, paramedics rushed through the door. She moved away to give them room to tend to Brad.
Even though she could feel herself start to shake, she held it together as she answered a few questions. Hold on,
she said and raised her hand. Can I go wash my hands and change my clothes, please?
The cop nodded.
Willow walked into her bedroom, quickly washed her hands, and changed. Fortunately, blood never bothered her, but it gave her an excuse to be by herself, take a breath, and make a quick call.
She dried her hands and tossed the towel onto the counter, then grabbed her phone. She put in the numbers Feral gave her and waited.
Yeah.
She paused. It didn’t sound like Feral. I’m looking for Feral?
He’s busy at the moment. Who is this?
It’s Willow. I’m a friend of Meg’s.
What’s up?
She told him about what happened and heard him growl. The sound sent a shiver of apprehension down her spine.
I’m sending some guys for you.
No, it’s fine…
It’s non-negotiable. You want to get here safely, right?
Yeah.
