Chapter One

After leaving work, Lindsey grabbed her coworker Patty’s arm as they walked down the sidewalk. Did you hear that?

Hear what? Patty asked.

Lindsey peered down the dark alleyway. I’m not sure. It was down there, but around the corner, so I can’t see.

Angry voices echoed.

See? I’m going to go see what’s going on.

Patty grabbed her hand. Are you crazy? We need to leave as quickly as possible.

No, what if someone needs help?

Oh, for God’s sake, girlfriend. When are you going to learn that you can’t save everyone? Patty asked. This is the city. You’re not out in the country anymore. You’re going to get yourself killed.

Lindsey sighed. She had a lot to learn about living in a place bigger than six hundred in the town of Albion. She was lucky enough to grow up with a family that cared, even though she wasn’t actually one of them, and in the country surrounded by nice people and animals.

After her mother had died in a car accident when she was four, she lived in so many homes she lost count. Only when the Millers took her in did she feel what a family was like.

She missed them something awful but knew she’d probably never see them again since she turned eighteen and aged out of the foster program. They had wanted her to stay, but there were so many kids in need that they couldn’t keep everyone. She understood, but it hadn’t helped with the pain of rejection.

Patty, I know you think I might be crazy…

Might? Patty asked sarcastically.

But I lived with people who taught me to be kind to everyone and help if I could. Don’t you think the world would be a better place if more people did that?

Probably, but I’m not sticking my neck out.

I get it. Go on. I’m going to check it out. I’ll see you at work tomorrow.

I really hope I’ll see you at work and not in the newspaper obituary.

Lindsey snorted and watched her friend walk off. The voices had gotten louder. She hurried down the alley and peeked around the corner to see four large men. Then she looked the other way to see what they were staring at and saw only one huge man. It was about to get violent and, without thinking, she dug her pepper spray out of her purse and stepped in the middle of the argument.

What the fuck? one in the group asked. Get the fuck out of the way, bitch.

She held up her other hand to the group of men, and kept her back to the lone one. Gentlemen. I’m sorry to bother you, but I have to tell you that if you’re thinking about this getting violent and you all go after the one man, I’ll have to step in and help him.

Jesus Christ, is she for real? another man asked.

I just don’t think it’s fair to have four against one.

She ignored the curses behind her and continued to face the gang down.

Slut, you need to move on before I fuck you up, the guy in front said.

She gasped. Did you just call me a slut?

Fuck, yeah.

Well, I have to tell you that’s extremely rude, and you should apologize right now, she said.

If you don’t move, I’ll help you, and I guarantee you’re not going to like it when I get my hands on you.

She held up the pepper spray. Try it. Then she felt a wall of heat against her back and stiffened. She didn’t dare turn around and look.

A heavy hand fell onto her shoulder, almost knocking her over.

Woman, you need to go now.

She shook her head. No, I’m going to help you.

The hand on her shoulder squeezed.

He sighed. You’re taking all my fun away.

She glanced over her shoulder and then up and up some more. Oh, Lord. The man was huge and terrifying. He had black hair, and his even darker eyes stared down at her.

What? I…

He sighed again before he lifted her easily and set her off to the side. Pointing his finger at her, he said, Don’t fucking move.

Unable to say anything, she merely nodded with her mouth open.

The guy walked toward the group of them. He stopped about five feet from them with his legs spread and his hands on his hips. Who’s going to be first to get hurt?

The four guys smiled at each other, and the one in front walked forward. In one quick move, her guy twisted the other man’s arm. He screamed out the same time she heard a crunch, and then he threw him to the side like he weighed nothing, making him hit the brick wall with a sickening thump before dropping to the ground unconscious.

The other men growled and went for him. He made some move, and one guy sagged to the ground unconscious. Then another one fell forward, holding his genitals.

The last man took several steps back as he looked at his friends, turned, and ran off.

She stared around at all the destruction, and the man she had come to save stood tall in the middle with his hands on his hips, looking around in disgust. Fuck, that wasn’t even worth it, he said.

A shiver raced down her spine when he turned toward her and narrowed his eyes. She wanted to say in fear, but there was another feeling involved, one she couldn’t identify. She should be terrified after what she just saw him do to three grown men, but she just knew he wouldn’t hurt her.

God, maybe she was a fool?

So, um … I see I’m not needed, she said, frozen in place.

He grunted and headed for her. She shut her eyes tightly and waited. When she just felt the heat from his body but nothing else, she slowly opened her eyes to see a black t-shirt and vest. She craned her neck to see his face.

She immediately wished she hadn’t because of the dark scowl on his face.

I want to spank your ass so much right now.

Her mouth dropped open. Wait. What?

You heard me. What in the fuck were you thinking getting in between men who were ready to get violent?
