    Summary

    Preface

Before the time of Samuel, and during the days of Judges there was a constant falling away from the Commandments the LORD God gave to Moses for the people to follow. And the children of Israel did that which seemed right in their own eyes. Thus, false gods and idol worship became common among them, and the LORD God allowed them to have their own devices. But when any of them honestly repented and cried out to Him for deliverance, to save them from their enemies, God raised up a leader in the office of Judge to deliver them.

The LORD God knew the children of Israel would turn away from Him, and He instructed Moses to tell the people what to expect in the process for the Nation eventually finding its way back to Him again; as described in Deuteronomy Chapters 26 through 34!

Also, Moses declared in Deuteronomy 17:14 through 17:20, the children of Israel would eventually ask for a king to reign over them in place of the LORD God that brought them out from Egyptian bondage (or the world’s oppression). And sure enough they complained in the days of Samuel for a king, and the LORD God instructed Samuel to anoint Saul king in Israel!

After King Saul lost favor with God because of his disobedience, the LORD God sent Samuel to anoint the youngest son of Jesse, whose name was David (the great grandson of Boaz and Ruth); to be king of Israel in the place of Saul (Refer to Ruth 4:10 through 4:22; Matthew Chapter 1; and 1 Samuel Chapter 10, 15, and 16)!

    Introduction

At the time of events beginning in 1 Samuel it had not yet been five hundred (500) years since the LORD God spoke to Moses out of the burning bush on Mount Sinai; Arabia (of Old Testament Midian). This date approximation of 500 years is given with reference to 1 Kings 6:1, which states the following:

1Ki 6:1 And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth (480th) year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt (which was about 1500 B.C.), in the fourth (4th) year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is the second (2nd) month, that he (Solomon) began to build the house (or Temple) of the LORD (this would have been about (1020 B.C.), or 1500 B.C. – 480 B.C. = 1020 B.C.; the (4th) year of Solomon’s reign.

    David ruled for forty (40) years before Solomon (2 Samuel 5:4 and 5:5), and Saul ruled for about forty (40) years before David (Acts 13:31). Thus, a more accurate estimate of the time of Judges would be (1500 B.C. – ((40 + 40 + 4) + (1020 B.C.)) – (the approximate fifty (50) years, or so, of Moses and Joshua’s leadership)) = 346 years! And the events of 1 Samuel would have begun about 1104 B.C., or 1020 B.C. + (40 + 40 + 4) = 1104 B.C. The beginning of David’s reign was about (1020 + 40 + 4) = 1064 B.C.!

    Since Solomon also ruled 40 years (1 Kings 11:42), his reign ended about 984 B.C., or (1020 B.C. – 36 = 984 B.C.).

Under the primary leadership of Moses; and then Joshua after Moses, the LORD God delivered the children of Israel out of four hundred (400) years of bondage under the Egyptians, and their (false god and idol worship). They (the children of Israel) were developed into a dedicated congregation and family unto the LORD God of Creation, by the time of Joshua’s death!

And so, by the time of Judges, the children of Israel were at a crossroad; "accomplished (and/ or educated) in the knowledge and commandments of God. Then, like many other events along the way of their education process the LORD God chose to evaluate them"; whether they would obey Him or not.

Thus, we see in the Book of Judges; surrounded by associated events (over a period of approx. 450 years; Acts 13:20) records of another time of Israel’s evaluation. During this period, they mostly abandoned the Laws and Commandments God gave through Moses, thereby disobeying the LORD God! And the Book of Ruth may have been given as one illustration resulting from that time of their evaluation?

But I am confident the result of any matter is never a surprise to God. And He accomplishes His will and purpose for the fallen human race, even when human obedience falls by the wayside!

The LORD God called and used Joshua along side Moses to bring (the children of Israel) unto the final lessons of their education, such that they would instruct generations after them; which was to culminate in evangelizing the worlds of every age with the knowledge and purpose of God the Creator!

There was no provision from God for any particular leadership in Israel immediately after Joshua; only evaluation. But they were fully educated in the Commandments of God by the beginning of Judges.

Should we dare speculate that this no doubt began, the Nation of Israel’s age of accountability in the eyes of God! And therefore, the world also becomes accountable when it hears the Plan(s)\ Word of God beginning from Old Times; the Plan of Atoning and of Salvation; the Gospel; the Message of the Cross? (Refer to Mark 16:15 through 16:18)

All of the Old Testaments, Judeo – Christian Bible Books details the beginning and continued works being put forth of Almighty God of Creation to bring the human race into an eternal, peaceful, obedient, loving relationship with God the Creator again; after so long a time of Adam’s disobedience! Thus, the books of 1 & 2 Samuel are additional records, events, instructions, prophecy, and illustrations; along the way of installments describing\ promoting the process God purposed to that end of reconciling men unto Him!

And the New Testaments, Judeo – Christian Bible Books reveal and record results, and end time prophecy Almighty God of Creation; the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, set in motion from those times of Old Testament foundations!

The first five (5) Books of the Judeo – Christian Bible were written by Moses, as God spoke to him face-to-face from a cloud that protected Moses and the children of Israel. The Books of Moses are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy (collectively known as the Pentateuch). They explain the beginning of creation, provides prophesy, and set in motion the foundational events and elements that the LORD God planned for bringing forth His Son and sacrifice (the Lord Jesus Christ) that would accomplish the atonement: As He, the God of Creation offers Him (Jesus, the atonement\ salvation) to the world in the New Testament Books and the Gospel; "with crowning emphasis on such verses as John 3:16; John 14:6; Roman 10:9 and 10:10 …"!

Joshua wrote (or recorded) the Old Testament Book that bears his name JOSHUA. And with his book, we see the continuation and final episodes of the journey of the children of Israel (or Jacob’s children\ offspring) as the LORD God intended for them in the Land of Promise. Also refer to Joseph’s prophecy in Genesis 50:22 through 50:26!

The Apostle Paul (in the New Testament Book of Acts 13:20) estimated the time of Judges to have continued about four hundred fifty (450) years. And it is also likely that the events in the Book of Ruth occurred somewhere along this timeline of Judges, and/ or during the early days of 1 Samuel!

Some Bible Scholars agree with Jewish tradition that Samuel (a prophet, judge, and priestly leader of Israel) wrote the Books of Judges, Ruth, and 1 Samuel through Chapter 24. But after his death at 1 Samuel Chapter 25; opinions are that the prophets Gad and Nathan wrote subsequent events detailing 1 Samuel Chapter 25 through 2 Samuel Chapter 24. And so, the lives of the prophet Samuel, King Saul, and King David are revealed in their contribution to Israel and service to the LORD God of Creation, in 1 and 2 Samuel!

God Uses Whomsoever, According to His Purpose

Jesus, Son of the Living God; Second Person of the Trinity and God Head: came of his own free will, and was sent of God the Father, according to His purpose, to deliver the human race from sin and iniquity unto eternal life. God the Son, Jesus is agreed with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit to be sent, called, and used for the purpose of God.

But let’s consider first those lesser called and used of God, then we will examine the timeline of events in Scripture that brings whomsoever will believe and come to victory, liberty (SALVATION) by the sacrifice of Christ Jesus on the cross.

All we need do is study Old Testament Scripture a little bit to realize that God uses whom ever He will for His purpose, and/ or service; He is gracious to whom ever He would be gracious; and He show mercy upon whom He would show mercy. But then there are also those God called, and once He called them, that calling was not rescinded even when they despised, embarrassed, or disgraced their calling. And in the Old Testament it usually seems an important indication of whether God has called an individual is the fact that He identifies whom he called from their youth, or even before they were born.

This Bible Analysis shall undertake the effort to look at the called of God and those God used in Scripture during the time of their life and living; but whether called and/or used, God impacted them MIGHTILY according to His great power and purpose.

No calculated attempt shall be made to explain why God chose to call in one case, while he might only used whomsoever in another case; such understanding is in the mind of God unless He wants us to know, and tells us. But we must concede the obvious, which is God always knew whom he would use just as he knew whom he would call long before their time of living their earthly life!

Some would argue this is Predestination. Not so! But as I said before, the choices God makes are in the mind of God unless He wants us to know, and tells us. Mortal understanding always falls short when compared with that of God, and we should be very, very, very careful about applying mortal judgments to such things concerning, how the eternal God makes His choices.

For example, our first thoughts may be that God chooses whomsoever he will from those that are currently born and living. But he is eternal God, therefore, is he limited or bound by mortal expectations and explanations?

And by the way, predestination as we mortals understand it nullifies John 3:16!

My dear friends the LORD God Almighty is not a man that He should lie; but He is the same yesterday, and today, and forever (Numbers 23:19; 1Samuel 15:29; Hebrews 13:8)

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

    Isaiah 55:8 and 55:9

And he said (to Moses), I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee (or before you get to where I send you, I will ensure they know that you are come in my behalf); and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

    Exodus 33:19

But this Bible student is persuaded that God called Abraham and Sarah, even though the scriptures tell us very little about their youth. However, I believe we can say that He chose to only use Lot, the Nephew of Abraham, in Lot’s time of living.

In no way should this statement be taken to mean that Lot died without God. We mortals are not qualified to make such a judgment; only God. But in my mind, even to be used of God is not to be despised in any way, because countless numbers of those that were neither called nor used in Scripture were not singled out of God (that is, of course, according to our seeing or observation).

Again, in no way should this statement be taken to mean that all those not mentioned in Biblical Scripture died without God. We mortals are not qualified to make such a judgment, because we can not know the final breaths of another’s life; only God knows and that person; according to their presence of mind. And again, I must repeat: such things are in the mind of God, alone. Who is qualified to council Him? Romans Chapter 14 verse 4 makes the case with great clarity for the relationship between mortal servant and master. How much more true this relationship is concerning the eternal God, and True Master of all?

Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.

    Rome 14:4

Covenant Men of Israel are Called and Used of God

The Lord God called Moses and kept him safe in the Palace of Pharaoh. He instructed him by name and went with him as he led the chosen people, Israel. Thus, Moses was called and chosen, and the family that became the Nation of Israel was chosen and called. That calling has not been rescinded even unto this present day, although they dishonored their calling on more than one occasion throughout the centuries:

Now therefore, I pray thee, if I (Moses) have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider (unto knowing?) that this nation (Israel) is thy people.

And he (the LORD God) said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

And he (Moses) said unto him (the LORD God), If thy presence goes not with me, carry us not up hence (out of Egypt into wilderness?).

    Exodus 33:13 through 33:15

The LORD God distinguishes Israel from all other people throughout world history:

For wherein shall it be known here that I (Moses) and thy people (Israel) have found grace in thy sight (O God)? Is it not in that thou goest with us? So, shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.

    Exodus 33:16

And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

And he (Moses) said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.

And he (the LORD) said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee (or before you get to where I send you, I will ensure they know that you are come in my behalf); and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

And he (the LORD) said, (But) Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me (the Lord Jesus Christ?), and thou shalt stand upon a rock (the Lord Jesus Christ?):

And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift (the split; wound; the opening) of the rock (of the Lord Jesus Christ?), and (I, the LORD) will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

    Exodus 33:17 through 33:23

As Moses approached the time of his earthly end of days, the LORD God instructs Moses to name Joshua his successor:

And Moses spake unto the LORD, saying,

Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man (or leader) over the congregation,

Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which have no shepherd.

    And the LORD said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him;

And set him (Joshua) before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him (Joshua) a charge (of leadership) in their sight.

And thou (Moses) shalt put some of thine honour upon him (Joshua), that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.

And he (Joshua) shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel (or instruction) for him (Joshua) after the judgment of Urim (refer to, Urim and the Thummim in the Definitions & Figures section) before the LORD: at his (Joshua’s) word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.

And Moses did as the LORD commanded him: and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation:

And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.

    Numbers 27:15 through 27:23

    Old Testament Judges:

Of all the Judges in Old Testament Israel, I believe Samson (Judges Chapter 13) and Samuel (Samuel Chapter 1 and 3) were called of God. Scripture speaks of them from their youth; even before their conception. The others Judges were used, although mightily of God, at the time they were needed according to the purpose of God.

Now, it seems God did not call Saul of the tribe of Benjamin to be the first King of Israel. But it seems God only used Saul in that position until David from the tribe of Judah would become of age to fulfill this calling. We see that the Lord GOD discontinued using Saul as king over Israel in 1Samuel 15:22 and 15:23.

Remember we made the statement that we do not believe that God rescind a calling. David despised his calling but he sincerely repented, and asked the Lord GOD forgiveness. God heard him, and brought him through his failure; but family tragedy did not depart from among the household of David …

And Samuel said (to Saul), Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou (Saul) hast rejected the word (or instruction) of the LORD, he (the LORD) hath also rejected thee (Saul) from being king.

    1Samuel 15:22 and 15:23

God said David despised his calling. But God chose to restore David, and did not rescind his calling:

    And Nathan (the prophet) said to David, Thou art the man. Thus, saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

And I gave thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house (or Nation) of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.

Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

Thus, saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he (your enemy) shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

And David said unto Nathan (the prophet), I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.

Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee (out of this sin) shall surely die.
