She looked at the little gold dragon sitting on her table and waited to see what was about to happen.
CHAPTER 1
Franzie and Crystalbelle
Franzie thought how odd it was when she saw her new baby brother all wrapped up in the corner of the bed. She was not at all impressed
Her world had been unfolding for four and a half years, and she was a happy, contented child fortunate enough to live in an area where there were lots of fields and woods.
Grandmama and Grandpapa came to see her often and would take her out in the car along country lanes filled with hedgerows in bloom, full of the scent of honeysuckle, pretty coloured birds and scurrying little creatures- a wonder and delight.
Sometimes they would prepare a picnic and then find a nice meadow to stop in. The blanket would be spread out on the ground, ready for the picnic. This was the best time; Franzie could run and hide in the grass, make daisy chains and see the buttercups shine under her chin. Grandpapa said the yellow shine meant she liked butter.
All of the wonderful wild flowers and spring scents allowed her imagination to flow. Her Mama had told her about fairies and how they tended the flowers; that was what so impressed Franzie and she was determined to find one. Her baby brother Roly, most certainly did not hold the same appeal even though like fairies, he was tiny. He was needy and cried a lot. She wondered if she had cried lots but couldn’t remember. Anyway she didn’t cry now.
At the end of April, Grandpapa took her to see the bluebell woods. Franzie was spellbound as she saw the sunlight shining through the trees onto the huge and wonderful carpet of blue flowers. The rays of the sun shone like a misty blanket above the blue ground. Surely Franzie thought, there must be fairies here. There really must.
Grandpapa held her hand as they walked amongst the bluebells. You’re not saying much my darling what are you thinking?
he asked. Franzie waited before she said anything quietly thinking about her answer. If there were fairies, she most certainly didn’t want to frighten them away. They were so tiny, fragile and shiny, like little lights; no one had told her, but in her mind she pictured how they looked. And you had to look out of the corner of your eyes to catch a glimpse of one.
She wondered if she should tell her Grandpapa; after all, she thought, I think he is too old to see them. After a while and much thinking she said, I am looking for fairies Grandpapa and this is just the right place because it looks so magical here.
Franzie liked the sound of that word; in her mind magic was something that was different to lots of solid things. And it gave her a feeling of something wonderful about to happen. Like now, in the bluebell wood, standing amongst the flowers, she felt much lighter and happier.
Well,
Grandpapa looked down at her smiling, let go of her hand and whispered why don’t you walk very quietly where you think they might be, I will sit here and keep you in my sight; tiptoe gently and see what you find.
Franzie was full of anticipation as she walked very carefully amongst the bluebells. Will I see one? She hoped so; oh she so very much hoped so. The words wouldn’t even come to describe what she wanted to happen; to see a fairy would be just beyond anything she could ever imagine at this moment. Just then she thought she saw a flash of light; at the same time she thought she heard something, but it was more a whisper in her head.
What she thought she heard was, Please be careful.
There it was again, and then she saw it, a flash of moving blue amongst the flowers near her feet. Franzie stood stock still, bent down a little and there, yes there she saw one, a tiny little being looking up at her, with curiosity. Then Franzie heard in her head, can you see me?
Of course she could and said so. Oh!
the little being piped up in a strange musical sound, it is not often your kind can see us, it is most unusual.
Quite overcome Franzie didn’t quite know what to do or say. Something enormous had just happened. So she pondered for a bit, then she knew what to do, introduce herself. Hello, my name is Franzie and I have been looking out for a fairy and hoping to meet one for a long time. What is your name?
The tiny being looked up and a soft flutey sound came from her lips. In Franzie’s head, she heard I am an elemental, one of many whose task it is to look after the flowers and make sure they bloom when they should and are happy. My name is Crystalbelle. I think you can see me because you love all the beautiful flowers. I can hear your thoughts and I know you wouldn’t want to hurt them.
Crystalbelle was wearing a dress of shimmering material, masses of blue curls reached her shoulders; on top
