The Inspired Diabetic - Lyndon Wissart

    Introduction:

    Weight Gain

    and Weight Loss

    Mindset

    "Most people spend time

    documenting their talent instead

    of developing them, most people

    believe that talent creates success

without effort. In a growth mindset,

    people believe their most basic

    abilities can be developed through

dedication and hard work - brains

and talent are just the starting

point. This view creates a love of

learning and a resilience that is

    essential for great accomplishment.

Virtually all great people have had

    these qualities."

    Carol Dweck

Since I can remember, I have been through the motions of eating healthily and thinking about exercising. But my weight was comfortable for me. I saw my older brother, Leslie, who was an avid exerciser and at times I wished I had the motivation like him to go running, play badminton and swim. But it was not there in me as it was in him.

I couldn’t even swim. I had the confidence and the motivation to try with a fear of the water because of nearly drowning as a child. I had the powerful experience at a young age of seeing my life flash before me, as I had seen so many times in films or on TV, when someone is going down fighting the water, trying to climb to the top, but they keep on going down. To this day, I am grateful to the two guys who saved my life. We were on a school trip to Austria and this incident took place in a lake, when I was pushed into the water from a pier with all my clothes on. I was only 14 years old and I could not swim!

I also remember, when I was growing up I had individual swimming classes doing different exercises to see if I could float. My best memory is doing the mushroom exercise. This is when in the water you grab both legs at the ankles with both hands to form your body into a ball shape and in theory you should float to the top of the water. But, of course, I just went straight down to the bottom.

My brother was tall and slim with a flat stomach and I heard him on occasions make a sly remark about me, saying, ‘Lyndon, your stomach is getting bigger.’ But he didn’t have to tell me, because I knew! I just did not do anything about it nor feel I needed to!

The day that something in me shifted and I knew I was getting bigger was when my mother, who was in her eighties by this point, said the same thing. That was a punch in the stomach for me and it hurt because all my life my mother was always supportive, caring and inspirational, motivating me to do good things. But she also spoke her mind openly.

I remember looking in the mirror at myself and seeing that my face was chubby and round and my stomach was sticking out, although I could - just - see my toes! But my bum was large and I was wearing size 38 inch, 31 length, regular trousers, when I should have been wearing 36 inch. I was compensating for the large bum!

Being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in October 2015 was a good and bad experience, depending how you see my situation. What it did for me was kick in the motivation that had always been there, but had never mentally connected when it came to food. In my mind, I knew what I was doing because I was a professional chef. But my diagnosis completely changed everything in my mind and I suddenly knew what I had to do and I was going to do it. I knew I had to lose weight and I had to lose my fatty stomach. I simply set my mental focus, my mindset, on reversing my diabetes. I started eating healthy foods and fitting in a regular, daily exercise routine, four times per week up to two hours per session in the gym.

I also started checking my weight every day and this kept me on track as a daily health check indicator and routine. Here is my weight loss table for that period of my life, which shows how quickly I was able to make it happen by putting my mind to it and staying focused on the goal. My determined mindset kicked in and I was suddenly motivated in a way I had not been for many, many
