I War and the Wooden Spoon

World War I was supposed to be the war to end all wars. Tell that to the millions soon to die in the Nazi Germany gas chambers of World War II.

It all started in 1939, just four short years after I was born into the Great Depression. It is then that my life of battles began against my personal demon, Poverty.

My young world was one of perpetual watered-down soup, with a wooden stirring spoon my only toy. We had no money, but I had a vivid imagination and countless dreams of a better tomorrow.

All too soon, I learned the truth about the so-called Glory of War—Agonizing Suffering and Violent Death. First to die was my stepfather at Pearl Harbor. Then my older brother, closing in on Japan.

I had seen all the newsreels about the bombings of London by hundreds of German airplanes. I dreamed of flying the new P51 fighter and doing my part to shoot them down, but I was only 10 and the war was soon over. Thank GOD.

This became the beginning of just the first of my many dreams of adventure, especially of flying.

But there were some problems. I had no money, was still only about 10, and afraid of heights. A cardboard box and an old broom stick would just have to do, for now.

    But I believe -

It’s Never Too Late to Make Your Dreams Come True.
