Emily’s Punishment

Emily squealed as the freezing spray splattered her sun-warmed skin. It was another hot July day in Southern England and the long summer holiday stretched ahead of them. Wearing very short shorts, flip flops and a crop top, Emily couldn’t really have been better dressed for a hose pipe fight, perhaps with the exception of better footwear. Her friend, Lily, was already stripped down to just a bikini which was probably just as well, because she was soaked through. Emily had a much better aim with the hose pipe than her best mate.

‘This is your last chance,’ growled a deep, warning voice from beneath the shade of a nearby apple tree, whose boughs dragged low to the ground. Emily and Lily shot each other a cheeky look, involving a lot of flashing smiles and comically raised eyebrows. Lily’s father, Ben, had been attempting to sit peacefully in the garden and read his newspaper, before the two girls arrived on the scene, intent on making trouble.

Utterly unafraid of her father, Lily placed a finger over the end of the hosepipe, in an attempt to increase the pressure of the water, before directing the spray in Emily’s direction. Squealing, the two girls began to dash about the garden, ducking behind garden furniture to avoid the worst of the bombardment. Eventually, the inevitable happened and Lily’s hose pipe splattered across her father’s newspaper, despite his warnings.

‘Right!’ Ben announced, throwing his newspaper to the grass and rising to his feet. With a squeak, Lily immediately dropped her weapon and dashed towards the safety of their house, giggling with every step taken. Knowing she wasn’t the culprit, Emily simply stood and observed the scene. It therefore took her by enormous surprise when she realised he was actually sprinting in her direction. Like a deer caught in the headlights, Emily just gazed as he approached. He may well be twenty-five years her senior, but Ben was an astonishingly
