I grew up in a small town in Texas, but always knew I was meant for bigger things. When I was a little girl, I would visit my grandmother after school and get on her old typewriter, where I would attempt to write mystery novels. Of course, I would get distracted by food or TV and never finished them.As I got older, I knew I wanted to write a book one day, but the timing never felt right, and I didn't feel like my heart was truly in it.One day, while I was trying to take a nap, a character popped into my head and started to tell me her story. Then, another character started to add to that story. I grabbed a notebook and pen. From there, the rest is history and I now have many voices in my head waiting for their stories to be told. Yay me.

    Heidi's Dream - Corey Mae

    Chapter

    1

Sitting alone, waiting on Carla and Jed, sipping on her usual caramel macchiato, Heidi found herself daydreaming about a guy she ran into a month ago. His name was Zander with a Z, and my God was he walking sex! That is if sex were a guy that could walk.

Ever since she ran into him here, at Chloe’s Coffee Shop, she frequented it a lot. It was homey, with its plush chairs and tiny library in one corner, and tiny lamps on each table. The bar itself was a light neutral granite that looked like something you would have at home. It also sat on the corner of the block, which was nice because it had two entrances. Plus, they had amazing pastries. Not that she needed them, but whatever, she was already chunky, so, why not? It would just add to her voluptuousness. Heidi wondered if Zander would like her curves. Probably not. He seemed like the type of guy who liked stick thin girls with sharp black make-up and bright red lips; the girls that were super intimidating without even trying.

Heidi was told she was intimidating before, but she just didn’t see how. She was soft around every edge. She hated confrontation and preferred to just go with the flow; although, if anyone messed with her family or friends, she wouldn’t mind taking a baseball bat to their knee caps. It took a lot to get Heidi worked up, but when she got there, it wasn’t pretty. She could go off on someone in a split second and not stop until they were in the fetal position, crying. But it just rarely happened, and most of the time, she let people walk all over her. She dreamed of the day she could stand up for herself on a regular basis and not wait until she was so stressed that she would explode.

She bet Zander didn’t take any shit. Men probably steered clear of him anyway, when they would see the tattoos and rough five o’clock shadow. Not to mention, his piercing blue eyes. It took one conversation with him to know that she would never forget how he looked or the way he smelled a bit like leather and mint. Some might think that would be a weird combination, but it worked; it was like fresh, clear, air flowing through her lungs and waking her from the inside out.

She could imagine sitting on his lap, facing him, and taking in his scent while running her fingers through his strawberry blonde hair. Heidi was closing her eyes, imagining the thought, practically able to feel his hair between her fingers, when someone sat down next to her. She opened one eye and looked to her left. Well, it’s about damn time!

Hey heifer, I’ve been busy okay, Jed said, snapping his finger at her.

Heidi rolled her eyes. Doing what? Playing with your secret beau?

I don’t know what you are talking about.

Bull, Jed. You were going to tell me before you and Carla stopped talking. Why are you so hush about it now? Heidi waved at the lady behind the coffee bar and pointed to her drink, implying that she needed to order another.

I don’t want to talk about it, okay? And I don’t want to talk about Carla either. Every time we get together now, you bring her up, and quite honestly, it’s getting on my nerves.

Heidi’s heart broke just a little, but she pushed her feelings to the side and focused on Jed’s. Fine, but I should warn you...

Hey Heidi. Carla walked up and slightly cut her eyes down. Jed.

Jed raised his hand towards the lady behind the counter. I’ll take mine to go please.

Jed, please don’t leave. I’m sure if y’all would sit and talk this out, everything would be fine, Heidi pleaded, but she knew it wouldn’t do any good.

I have nothing to say, Heidi. Besides, I have somewhere I would much rather be.

Let me guess. It’s what you wanted to tell Heidi and not me. Carla glared at Jed, which was odd because Carla usually got her feelings hurt and would pout that Jed was still upset with her.

Carla must have hit a nerve because Jed rolled his eyes, but turned away, putting his head slightly down. These two really needed to grow up.

Just when Heidi was going to plead some more with her two besties, the lady brought Jed’s latte. He grabbed it, threw down a ten-dollar bill and said, Keep the change. He practically ran out the door.

Heidi watched Jed until she couldn’t see him anymore before turning back to Carla.

    What the hell?

What? She gave Heidi a puppy dog face like she was innocent.

Why were you so rude to Jed? You are never rude to him.

I am tired of him being a jerk and me just taking it like a pathetic little girl. I’ve decided I’m going to stand up for myself. I made a mistake, I apologized, I begged for forgiveness, but I refuse to do it anymore.

Wow. Carla is learning to stand up for herself, and yet, here Heidi was, still being a baby. She felt herself slowly start to cry on the inside. This sucks!

I’m glad Jed left anyway. I wanna talk about my wedding. I need your help picking out the bridesmaid dresses. Carla pulled out her iPad and started flipping through pictures.

I really don’t feel like talking wedding right now, Carla. No offense. Heidi turned towards Carla with pleading eyes.

It’s fine. I really have some other things I can go work on anyway. Call me when you are feeling better, and we can go over these dresses. Carla dropped her iPad back in her oversized purse and stood to leave.

All Heidi could get out was, Sure.

Carla didn’t say another word, she just left.

Ma’am, can I get the biggest piece of molten caramel chocolate cake you have, please?

The lady nodded her head, grabbed the cake, heated it and placed it in front of her.

Heidi wasn’t sure why she put up with their drama, but she loved them and just wanted them happy. What she would like to do is yell at them and tell them how much their selfishness was hurting her. Instead, she just stared at her cake in a daze, daydreaming about what she wished she could tell them, but could never find the courage to do.

Zander had sat in his car for half an hour, watching her. Now, he entered the little coffee shop and strolled to her side, taking the seat to the right of her. Everything okay?

Heidi turned her light green eyes on his light blue ones and he swore he saw a sparkle, but unfortunately, the sparkle faded too quickly. Not really. My two best friends are fighting, so I’m going to stuff my face with this deliciously decadent cake and get fatter.

First of all, Heidi, you are not fat. Second of all, this does look amazing, so I am going to help you eat it. That way, you won’t feel guilty eating it all by yourself. He grabbed a spoon from the silverware holder to his right and dug it into the cake, dragging it through the caramel sauce that spilled out from the center.

Heidi watched him take the bite; he closed his eyes, savoring it and slowly drew the spoon out of his mouth. He opened his eyes and caught hers; they were brighter than normal. He could practically feel her panties dampen right there and then. Her mouth was parted and her breathing had increased.

What’s wrong? Zander actually saw reality come back full force in her features and her brows crease in confusion.

    Have we met?

I’m kind of hurt you don’t remember. He pointed to the table where they first met. It was right there, by the window.

I actually did remember, but I didn’t wanna feel stupid if I did and you didn’t.

How could I forget? He winked at her and saw pink flush her cheeks. When I first walked in here, you were in line, getting your caramel macchiato and… he pointed to the table again, …you sat at the table by the window.

Wow, stalkerish much? She gave him a pretty little smirk with her plump lips.

He nodded towards the cake. Are you going to eat?

Oh, right. I forgot. Heidi picked up her spoon and dug in, shoveling the caramel sauce on her piece of cake.

She moaned as soon as it hit her tongue, and Zander’s dick jerked to life. Fuck! So, do you want to talk about Carla and Jed? Change of subject was desperately needed.

Not really. I don’t want to ruin this magical cake moment. It’s too delicious.

Zander laughed hard. Wow. Magical cake moment, huh? I like it.

Heidi jerked her head at him; her brow furrowed again in confusion. Wait, how do you know their names? I didn’t tell you, did I?

Yes, ma’am, you did. Not. Zander wasn’t normally so careless. He had to be more careful.

Oh. I don’t remember, but that doesn’t surprise me. She picked up another piece of cake with her spoon, swirled it in the caramel and shoved it in her mouth.

They sat quietly for a few minutes and ate. Zander could tell that she carried a huge weight on her shoulders, but what it was, he had no idea. He normally could have cared less, but something about Heidi called to him. He wanted to protect her; not just because he was getting paid to look out for her. He technically wasn’t supposed to have any contact with her, but he couldn’t help it. Being near her calmed his soul.

I’m going to try to get Carla and Jed to talk tonight at Josie’s Bar. I doubt it will work, so, if you wanna stop by, feel free. We can hang out and dance if they decide to be biotches again.

Zander looked into her eyes and smiled. I will have to see if I can manage it with my work schedule.

Oh okay. What do you do for a living?

Zander couldn’t tell her the truth, but since he didn’t want to lie, he replied, We can discuss that later. It’s boring anyway. I want to know the gossip about Carla and Jed right now.

Heidi let out a throaty laugh. It was music to his ears. You want to hear the gossip? She laughed again.

What’s wrong with that, woman? He pretended to be offended by her laughter at his expense.

Absolutely nothing. I just didn’t expect a guy covered in tattoos to be asking to hear some gossip.

Well, here I am, and I’m ready to hear it. Zander gave her a cheesy smile.

Heidi laughed, Basically, Jed didn’t want to tell Carla something that was going on in his life, but he was willing to tell me. Carla let old bosses know she knew a secret about them and Jed to save her boyfriend from losing the company, and now, they aren’t talking. That’s the short version anyway.

Well, I’m sorry to hear that, but I’m sure they will start missing each other. In fact, they probably already are but are just too stubborn to admit it. Zander rubbed his hand down her arm; she shivered, but he didn’t seem to notice.

Well, that’s why I am going to keep ambushing them with surprise meetings. Eventually, they will have to talk, right? She looked at him with worry in her eyes.

It could. Or it could backfire on you and they won’t want to hang out with you anymore, for fear of having to see each other.
