    Chapter 1

    The five silver bells on the door of An Artful Christmas jingled as Wendy Byron’s last customer left. Wendy took a deep breath to hold back the tears that threatened to fall when a new age musical rendition of the Carol of the Bells played on the bluetooth speakers around the store. She loved the song and had hummed with each version on her playlist all day. But now, the song made her feel as empty as Main Street was outside her store window.

    Wendy brushed glitter off the sleeves of her red sweater and black pants. Why she bothered, she wasn’t sure. The stuff stuck on anything it touched, including her customers who had come through her shop non-stop all day getting last-minute gifts for Christmas.

    Her shop had many Christmas goods from nostalgic winter paintings, sculptures of holiday figurines, handmade cards, dishware, and winter villages. The Christmas trees burst with ornaments made by local artists. Few people left her shop without purchasing at least one thing.

    Wendy poured herself a mug of hot apple cider. The scent of cinnamon, cloves, and apples calmed her. Memories of previous years where she and her mom leaned against the counter celebrating the day’s success with a mug of something hot flickered through her mind. Wendy sipped of cider and almost heard her mom’s sweet, infectious laugh. Wendy wished she
