    The red teardrop ornament with a dark red spiral in the center, dangled from the tip of a Bristlecone pine branch in a vase of water. Sam had wrapped a green terry cloth bath towel around the vase to make it look more like a Christmas tree instead of a lonely branch. Her efforts amused her, and looked tacky instead of beautiful, but this was the unexpected consequence of living on the road. Sometimes things didn’t work as planned.

    She and Hunter hadn’t planned to decorate their RV beyond a few Christmas lights lining the ceiling and windows. Their plan changed after they visited a flea market outside of Boulder, Colorado, and found the ornament.

    The vendor’s appearance had drawn her and Hunter in. His straight white hair was pulled into a low ponytail. He dressed like an illustration of a thin shoemaker she had seen in her fairytale book. He wore a white shirt, brown pants, and an off-white apron that went past his knees. He winked at Sam and gave her a friendly smile, while he polished a teardrop ornament.

    Every ornament on the vendor’s table looked exactly alike. Each one came
