    Melody’s winter jacket rustled as she jogged faster on the cleared bike trail than all the cars that drove the winding road of Wilton Park. Mounds of snow, illuminated by wire-framed Christmas light sculptures, glowed on the sides of the trail. The brightness of the five million Christmas lights around park made it easy to accept the early darkness of winter. A mixture of Christmas tunes and shouts of children pointing out different light displays flowed out of rolled down car windows creating an oddly festive sound.

    With every breath, Melody felt the cold Minnesota air enter her lungs and leave in a visible puff of warmth that moistened the ridge of the collar of her reflective turquoise jacket. She wove around clusters of people who stopped to admire the different themed areas like a mini-zoo that included a sculpted giraffe taller than her and a life-sized hippopotamus. The creativity of the park planners made Wilton Park a popular place during the month of December.

    Jogging under the tunnel of lights formed by the maple branches reaching across the trail made the park feel like a romantic fairyland. She chuckled softly to herself about a romantic fairyland. The chances of meeting a single guy on Christmas Eve that had the ability to capture her attention were about as good as Melody finding a one-hundred-dollar bill on the trail without light.

    Melody peeked at her fitness watch, which indicated she had about five minutes left before her cool down. She readjusted her fleece headband and continued toward the picnic area near the lake to peek at the six odd shapes of snow.

    It felt good to run off the sugar she had eaten during her shift as an emergency room nurse at the hospital. Many generous people in the Bellmore community brought gifts of candies and cookies, thanking the staff for working during Christmas. Melody resisted the sweets until after lunch, when she popped a light, crispy butter cookie into her mouth. The vanilla sweetness tasted so good that she found herself taking another cookie each time she walked to the front desk.
