John Brown

John Brown (1800-1859) was a staunch abolitionist who came to believe that violence and coercion was the only way to stop the scourge of slavery in the United States. Fiercely religious and believing himself to be the instrument of God sent to earth to personally abolish slavery, Brown led a life of activism and violent resistance, finally deciding that the best way to set off a slave liberation movement would be to capture the Federal armory at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, arm the slaves and then lead a violent rebellion that would sweep through the southern states. During the raid, in October of 1859, five men were killed and many more injured, but Brown and his forces did indeed take over the armory. Very few slaves joined his revolt, however, and the armory was soon retaken by the local militia and US Marines, the latter led by Robert E. Lee himself. Brown was tried immediately, found guilty and hanged in December of 1859, the first person to be executed for treason in the United States. John Brown delivered the following speech at the conclusion of his trial on November 2, 1859. He would be executed a month later and become a hero and martyr to the abolitionist cause.

    Introduction

Scientists and media individuals alike watched in awe as a humanoid (robot) was unveiled at a recent electronics seminar.

It’s fair to say that the ‘bot did hold a certain appeal but the one glaring omission in the whole collective reaction of oohs and wows, was the obvious lack of any of the most rudimentary of skills. Without being too harsh on the obviously brilliant brains that had achieved even this level of competence, a 3 month old child, would have left the ‘bot in it’s wake when it came to cognitive behaviour and skills.

The glaring truth brought home by this example was, just how awesome the human brain is and how little we really understand about its workings. Just stretch out your hand and move your fingers, how amazing are we.

Not until we experience on a personal level the utter, devasting effects of memory loss in someone close to us, does the awful significance of this condition come crashing home.

Let me state my position at this juncture, I am not a scientist or a medic, I have no special skills, learnt or otherwise that I would claim to be the sole remedy for such conditions as onset dementia or similar. My field of experience (I hesitate to use the word expertise) is travel.

The premise of this work is based on first-hand knowledge of a close relative who suffered a slow decline over more than a decade or so and the recent devastating news, that a very close friend is showing early signs of the same affliction.

The latter, set me on a path of research, practical help and prevention. Having seen what happens when people are in denial, I am determined to do all I can to slow the progress of my friend’s mental decline. I cannot guarantee that my actions will work but to do nothing is not an option. And if this work helps in some small way, with your own situation, well that’s reward enough.

The final chapter of this short work is dedicated to what I call Brain or Mind Tricks, plus, a series of challenges and exercises to open
