I WINCE AS I LOOK DOWN at my paisley outfit. It’s supposed to be a geisha-style kimono, but no real geisha would be caught dead in something so tacky and skimpy. I turn my eyes to the ceiling and offer a silent apology to my ancestors.

When the auctioneers showed the kimono to me half an hour ago, I wanted to shout, Are you freaking serious?! But I took the outfit and went into the dressing room to change without saying a word. Desperate people can’t afford to be choosy, and I am really freaking desperate.

Not for the first time, I curse my father. If it weren’t for his gambling addiction, I wouldn’t be standing in this shady club, getting ready to sell my virginity to the highest bidder. I close my eyes, holding back tears. The auctioneers would be pissed off if I ruined my makeup.
