WORD COUNT: 9,200

Excerpt:

I step out of the taxi. At least Dad had the decency to spring for a cab. When I look at the building, I freeze. Montgomery Enterprises. Then I realize where I heard the name Stephen Montgomery before. He is the CEO of my dad’s company. At first, I try telling myself that Stephen Montgomery could be a common name. But it’s too much of a coincidence. The man who kissed me last night is the man who’s threatening my father with bodily harm. F**k, did Stephen know who I was when he saw me in the club? Nausea rises in me.
A well-dressed woman comes out of the office building. “Are you Courtney Smith?” she asks.
My mouth is dry. “Yes,” I say in a near-whisper.
“I’m Christina, Mr. Montgomery’s assistant. He has been expecting you.” She beckons me. “Come.”
I swallow, then follow her inside. We take the elevator. During the whole elevator ride, my palms are sweating like crazy. Why does Stephen want me? Is he going to punish me for my father’s crimes? I shiver.
“Are you cold?” Christina asks.
“I’m fine, thank you,” I lie.
The elevator doors open, and fear wraps itself around me.
“Please follow me, Miss Smith,” she says.
After taking a deep breath, I follow her.
“Mr. Montgomery, Miss Smith is here,” she says when we've walked into the CEO’s office.
Nausea rises in me again when Stephen smiles at me from behind his desk. “Hello, Courtney.”

When I manage to tear myself away from taking Buzzfeed quizzes and watching unhealthy amounts of TV, I write romance and smut. My works feature alpha males, sexy times, and/or my sarcastic sense of humor. I hail from Cleveland, aka the best freaking city in the world, and believe LeBron James is the perfect human being. Despite all of my efforts, I have never truly been able to quit caffeine. My problematic favorites include Taylor Swift and Gone with the Wind. I love to hate/hate to love k-dramas. If I say I’m on a diet, I’m just lying to you and myself. One of these days, I'm going to get hypertension from an excess of salt, both literal and figurative. If I'm awkward around you, I probably don't know what to say to you and/or I think you're hot. And despite what anyone says, Forrest Gump so deserved that Oscar over Pulp Fiction.

T hose guys are totally checking us out, Katerina says with a giggle.

I follow the direction of my friend’s gaze. Two guys are indeed looking at us. One of them is a cute blond All-American guy in a white button-down, and he’s smiling at Katerina. The other guy is a tall, dark, and handsome man who’s intimidating as hell with his all-black designer suit and decidedly non-smiling face.

And he’s staring right at me.

Of course Katerina gets the cute friendly guy and I get a guy who sends a shiver down my spine. And not in the pleasant way.

Man, they’re both hot, Katerina says. Do you want to go talk to them?

    I say, Um...

Before I can answer, a server walks up to us and presents us with two cocktails. Courtesy of the gentlemen over there.

Katerina grins, taking one cocktail for herself and handing me the other one. Thank you.

I get a nervous feeling in the bottom of my stomach as I stare at the pink cocktail. For the two hours Katerina and I have been sitting in the nightclub, I’ve been nursing one glass of mediocre Riesling because my nearly broke ass wasn’t going to drop 20 bucks on a cocktail. I look across the room. Mr. Tall, Dark, Handsome, and Intimidating is still staring at me.

Come on, Courtney, let’s go talk to them, Katerina says. Before I can come up with some sort of excuse, she takes my hand and drags me to the two men. She sits next to Mr. All-American. For a second, I stand awkwardly. Maybe I should run to the restroom. Before I can move, Mr. Tall, Dark, Handsome, and Intimidating grabs my hand and says, You can sit next to me.

I swallow. Okay, I say lamely. As I sit down, he doesn’t let go of me. I gaze at our intertwined hands. What is with this guy?

Do you want to dance, Katerina? the blond guy asks.

Sure! my friend replies, beaming at him. Without another word, Katerina and Mr. All-American hit the dance floor, leaving me alone with Mr. Tall, Dark, Handsome, and Intimidating.

    Great.

Do you not like that cocktail? he asks. I can get you another one.

Is he trying to get me drunk? This cocktail is fine, I say. Then I take a sip. A very, very small sip to ensure that I don’t get intoxicated around him. Which is kind of a shame because the cocktail is really good. No wonder it costs 20 bucks.

    What’s your name?

Courtney Smith, I say without thinking. I curse in my head. I should have given him a fake name.

    He raises his eyebrows. Smith?

I want to roll my eyes. 90% of people express their skepticism when I give them my last name because
