My palms sweat as I stare at the email on my computer screen. My boss Mr. O’Connell never emails me. His preferred mode of communication is to bark orders at me over the phone. Get me an iced matcha latte with light crushed ice and exactly two ounces of oat milk. Write a 500-word report on the stock market trends, ideally without your typical abuse of the semicolon. Organize the books on my shelves by the second word of the title. If something is particularly urgent, he slams a hand on my desk and barks orders at me in person.

I look at my nails, desperately wanting to bite them. What does my boss want? Is an email a good or bad sign? Probably bad.
