Author

Jeremiah Donaldson

Jeremiah Donaldson is a science fiction/horror writer, editor, game designer, free thinker, corporate slave, and overly blunt commentator that grew up in rural Kentucky and lived in Florida for 13 years before moving back in 2008. When he's not working...whatever, he always works, let's start that over. When he's not playing his part as a cog in the machine for the specified number of hours per week, or doing housework, or planting fruit trees in preparation for the climatic meltdown we're forcing upon the planet, he strings together words for peoples' enjoyment.

    Horse Worm pandemic, day 619

Dr. Lovedeath, a tall, gray haired man in a lab coat, tapped the clipboard he held with a pen. He hummed and drummed faster for several seconds.

Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap

People aren't dying fast enough, he finally said.

President Dicks's aide jerked and looked from the drumming pen to Dr. Lovedeath's face. His reflection looked back at him in the Doctor's mirrored sunglasses. Sir?

Dr. Lovedeath sighed and slid his pen into one breast pocket. The two caret diamond earring in his left earlobe twinkled as he looked back up to them. People aren't dying fast enough.

The aide blinked and glanced at his two assistants that were taking notes and providing security. I'm not sure I know what you mean, sir.

Dr. Lovedeath cleared his throat. People.

    Yes.

    Aren't.

    Right.

    Dying.

    Okay.

    Fast.

    Sure.

Enough. Dr. Lovedeath stuck the clipboard under one arm and smiled.

Uh, sir. The aide shuffled his feet. What exactly does that mean?

One of the assistants put his hand on the aide's shoulder. We'll tell President Dicks and let him decide.

Dr. Lovedeath nodded and wiped a tear that rolled down from under his sunglasses, sniffing. People aren't dying fast enough.

President Peter Dicks's aide looked at his two assistants and nodded.

    ***

Goddammit, Lawrence, put your diaper on!

You shouldn't cuss, mom. Lawrence dropped his backpack to the floor and looked at the disposable diaper laying on the kitchen table next to his empty cereal bowl.

Uh, Luress! War ur ass, Kelly mocked from behind the diaper covering her face.

    Lawrence groaned. This sucks.

Dying sucks, Lawrence! His mom squealed from the front door. I didn't keep you alive for 16 years for you to die on me now!

I don't see how this works, mom! Why don't we just cook our food better so the horse worms in the meat chain are killed! And we have a 99% chance of living even if we don't!
