Chapter 1

Dyo Hollingsworth had been crouched over his desk for over four hours when Tandy entered his office.

You have less than three hours before your flight leaves, Tandy said, tapping her fingers on his desk.

Dyo looked up and placed his glasses on the desk. You only need to be at the airport two hours before your flight, and most people don’t even do that.

Would you like to turn around and take a look outside your window? It’s five o’clock in Manhattan. It’s going to take you a while to get there.

Still, I think I’ve got a little time, Dyo said, reaching for his glasses again.

Tandy grabbed them from the desk before he could, and met his eyes.

Your grandmother has called four times today to make sure that you are going to be on that plane on time. If I had known she was going to, I would have switched phone answering days with you. Your grandmother is not messing around, and as much as I love her, Olympia is one scary chick. I don’t want her blaming me if you don’t make it. She is not someone I would ever want to cross.

You’re still scared of her from that Halloween ceremony years ago, Dyo said. I told you, that was just for entertainment. We don’t really even celebrate Halloween. We call it…

Samhain. Yes, I know, Tandy said. And your grandmother was just doing that on a talk show to sell her books. Still, it scared the crap out of me. And remember what she did to Roger when he dumped you?

Tandy, you know there’s no proof of that, Dyo said, trying to keep a smile from crossing his lips.
