    Chapter One

J en, you know it is not going to be the same anymore. You’re going to be on the cheerleading squad and going to practices and I’m going to be stuck eating my lunch by myself. Or if I’m lucky, maybe the stoners will let me hang out with them.

Steph and Jen just finished junior high, and high school was not far away. High school was where it all ended. Steph had seen it happen with her older sister, Clara, who was now working at a local diner while her old friends were in college in the city. Clara never said anything about it, but Steph remembered how sad Clara was the year that she went into high school. Steph remembered how Clara stopped going to parties and friends’ houses. Clara’s rich friends dumped her in high school, and she was never the same again.

As Steph folded one of Jen’s expensive pairs of jeans, Jen said, No. It’s not going to be like that with us.

Jen and Steph were best friends since the day that boy in kindergarten had pulled Steph’s pigtails and Jen flattened him with one punch to the gut.

It is. As soon as they find out how poor I am, you know I will not be accepted by anyone you make friends with.

Well, I won’t make friends with them then. I don’t have to be on the cheerleading squad.

Of course you do. You’ve wanted to do this since 7th grade. I’m not going to let you give up on your future and be a stoner like I’m likely going to end up being.

You are not. We don’t have to tell anyone that you’re not rich like me. We can build up a whole new life for you. Half the kids in high school won’t even know you.

Steph looked down at the one good pair of jeans she had. It had a little hole building in the knee because they were hand-me-downs from her sister and the bottoms of the jeans were frayed.

Really? Are you going to buy me expensive clothing? Can I move into your house?

Jen picked at her nail. I would if my mom would let me. You know how she is with money though.

    Ya.

What if you got a job? You could save up money and I could help you get the good deals on expensive stuff.

What am I going to do for good money? You know the babysitting jobs in my area pay shit.

You could get babysitting jobs near me. These rich people will pay lots for someone that actually does the job. Half the girls our age can’t be bothered to work for their money around here. You know that. And when you are babysitting, you can stay here after. Then they would never know that you weren’t rich. If anyone asks, we’ll just say you’re my cousin or something.

    Steph looked doubtful.

C’mon Steph. Let’s try it. I bet that we could fool everyone. We have to try. I don’t want to lose you. You’re my best friend.

Do you think? I mean, how are we going to get me all those babysitting jobs?

Flyers, I guess. My dad might recommend you to his friends. He likes you.

Jen’s mom, Denise, was a bit of a nut job. She was tight with money, yet she’d fly off to Cuba on a minute’s notice if her friends were going. She often left Jen on her own to go off with her friends. She was sarcastic, and she loved being rich. She didn’t much care for her teenage daughter, who was prettier than she’d ever been. And her husband, Sam, was boring and unmotivated in her eyes.

Sam, Jen’s dad, was the complete opposite of her mom. He never had any problem giving Jen money for whatever she wanted, as long as Denise wouldn’t find out about it. He was kind of quiet in that really smart way, and Steph had secretly had a crush on him all of her life.

Sam was everything that she wanted her own dad to be. He rarely drank, and he always smelled so clean. And he sometimes sat with them at the counter in the kitchen and talked to them about real stuff. He was very good looking too. Best of all, he didn’t act all weird when he was around her like her dad’s friends did.

He was nothing like Steph’s dad. Steph’s dad was unemployed more than he worked. He was most likely to be found in the backyard or the kitchen with his friends, drinking, laughing too loud, and swearing often. He barely looked at her since she was very little. His friends were not so subtle about noticing her, though.

Ever since Steph hit puberty and got these big boobs, her dad’s friends got all freaky when they saw her. They either wouldn’t talk to her at all or they’d talk like they were trying to be teenagers and they would stare at her tits. But they all stared when they thought she wasn’t looking.

Steph shrugged her shoulders. Ok. We can try. I don’t think it will work but...whatever.

Jen turned on the radio and blasted one of the Top 40 songs that she knew would make Steph smile.

C’mon Steph, Jen said as she pulled her up off the bed, shaking her arms. High school is going to be awesome. We’re both going to be cheerleaders and we’re going to date hot football players. Dance with me!

This was one of the things Steph loved about Jen. She believed that anything could happen. She believed that Steph deserved good things. And she believed that dancing to loud horrible pop music was the cure for anything that made you feel bad. And sometimes she was right, Steph thought, as she began to bounce around the room with her.

It didn’t take long before Steph had her first babysitting job that summer. Sam’s friends needed a babysitter at the last minute and Jen called her. And it was so easy.

Steph got to the Chapman’s house at 6 p.m. and they introduced her to their two girls. They showed her around their insanely big house and gave her some instructions.

The girls already had dinner, but if you’re hungry, feel free to help yourself to anything in the fridge. There are lots of snacks and the girls can pick out what they want to have with the movie. Everything is set up in the movie room already, and the girls know how to start it. When the movie is done, the girls can go to bed and you’re on your own. The family room has music and movies and TV or whatever you want to do. The girls will sleep right away, likely. They are used to our schedule. Right, girls?

The two cute little blonde girls nodded and smiled up at her.

And everything went exactly as the Chapman’s said it would. The girls watched the movie and went to bed. They were so quiet after Steph left her in their rooms that she had to keep checking on them to make sure they were ok. She’d babysat lots of kids before, but they were usually total brats.

She watched TV until the Chapman’s came home and they paid her.

There’s a little something extra for you there, Mrs. Chapman said. "I’m impressed with how clean the house still is. We
