FOREWORD
I sometimes think that, in our society, sales skills are the only thing that counts.
Without mastering marketing techniques, you’re lost nowadays—you don’t exist.
-or-
You’re lost nowadays without mastering marketing techniques; you don’t exist. More than anything else, you better get around damn well while selling yourself to an employer amid fierce competition, or while owning your own business. If you don’t get around well and don’t know how to promote yourself in the market, and if you’re not likable personally or visually (according to our society’s strict criteria), having a good product or a shining talent seems to matter little. Worst of all, what is being sold, or how it’s being sold will no longer matter—as long as it is selling. It does not seem to matter how silly, unnecessary, low quality, or unprofessional it is. What saddens me most is that due to the high expectations of companies, many marketing professionals succumb to one specific goal—selling at all costs. The end justifies the means. Some people are already growing up believing that meeting sales goals and accumulating material goods are the only things that matter in life. Our environment encourages us to keep buying things we don’t even need, not considering other people when attempting to reach sales goals. Reaching sales goals is fine—but doing so egotistically and thoughtlessly is not.
And so, I’ve noticed that many people who have not allowed themselves to be swallowed up by capitalism often feel trapped and inferior. There are individuals and their yearning souls who, on the one hand, only want to create peace according to their principles that are not in line with greedy consumerism. On the other hand, though, there’s a system that doesn’t allow them to do that. I believe that there are middle paths, or paths that involve connecting and cooperating, that are purer and more evolved that offer man love and, along with it, acceptance and compassion.
So, do we have to push people at all costs for them to buy something from us—or can we be unobtrusive, compassionate salesmen?
Lara Sotlar Urankar, the author of Sleeping Little Girl, Wake Up! offers a superb deliberation on this topic. While in an essentially negative mindset about the unstoppable nature of consumerism, I read her book in one sitting. Through her experience, she reminds us that because of the pressure created by capitalism—and the stress that comes with it—we often forget how to find meaning in sales: how to grow personally as a sales agent, and how to respect and love people—instead of egotistically striving to achieve a goal (i.e., highest sales possible).
Her answer is simple. When selling, don’t just see yourself and profits. In her own words:
Change the word ‘sell’ to the word ‘help’ and the results will come by themselves.
Each interaction should not just be for the purpose of buying or selling.
These interactions could be a wonderful opportunity to get to know your fellow man, to listen to them, and to try to understand their needs—and worries. . Let the person feel that we carry love and understanding in our hearts and not just yearning for profits.
Lara, whose work deeply satisfies her and who’s been successful at marketing medications for an international pharmaceutical company, knows that having such a caring attitude allows results to come by themselves sooner or later. You just have to believe and persist on your path.
Reading Lara’s book will provide you with excellent and very concrete advice on how to realize yourself in sales while spreading understanding and respect. It will teach you how to become approachable to strangers (buyers) and how to lend
