Finish Your Fucking Book - David Macpherson

    1

The Whole Book in a Short Chapter.

You want to finish your book? You have an uncompleted manuscript that you have been talking about forever and it is still in pieces. It is nowhere near done. Or you have secretly worked on a book that just gets bigger and bigger. What do you do?

I have the answer. I have the solution.

If you are reading this book as a preview on Kindle, then you can be done after this page. You should buy the book and read more, because it will be fun and I can go through it in more detail.

But if you are in a hurry, as most of us are these days, then I will be happy to give this secret to you for free. That’s how cool a guy I am.

Here it is. The secret to stop not finishing the book.

Get over yourself and finish the fucking book.

That’s it. As easy as that.

Actually, it is also damned hard to do. But only if you have in your head that writing has to be perfect.

If you want to read on, that’s the basic theme we will discuss. Get over thy self. Finish the book. It will not be perfect, but perfect is boring as shit. And you don’t want that. You want a book that is done that people can read.

That might be just saying you are done, or strategies on how to defeat difficult plot points. We will go over as much as is interesting to me (it might look like I am writing to help you all out, but like everything I write, the primary drive is to amuse myself. If other people are amused too, great, but the most important thing is for me as the writer to be enjoying myself. If I feel like the book is turning into a drag, I will cut it short. But more on that later, this is already turning into a pretty large parenthetical statement.)

So, to sum up the book. One of the big reasons you haven’t finished the book is that you are taking the writing of it as if it is an important act. Get rid of that. Think of it as a fun thing to do. You are talking shit about stuff and having a great time. When you are not interested anymore, wrap it all up and call it a day.

This is how I do it and the book is going to be a little bit how-to and a little bit memoir. If that scares you, don’t buy this book. But you should, because it will be fun. Or at least I had a good time writing it. If you are reading this, then I finished it. And I tend to not finish books I didn’t have fun writing. More on that too.

Man, there is a lot of stuff that we will get to later. You should read the whole thing. But really you don’t have to. Everything I will go over has already been said here in this first chapter.

So I will see you at the next chapter. Or I won’t. Either way, good luck finishing your book. I have faith in you!

    The Truth About Writers

I don’t know why this is true, but talking to a friend or an acquaintance about the book you are writing is so much easier than actually writing it.

Talking shit is simpler than writing shit.

Has this happened to you: have you been at a party and said that you are writing a book and then the person tells you about the book they want
