Danny
Danny Frances had first seen his brother’s zombie corpse a few days before.
He’d known it was supposed to happen. He’d freaking seen it happen, for crying out loud. His brother’s hand clutching his, tight and clammy, but then slipping. And the other undead gorged on Julian’s body, and Danny remembered his screams as he was eaten alive.
Danny could do nothing to remove such images form his mind. They flashed before him constantly, a reminder of his failure to save Julian, his younger brother.
He walked through the forest, feeling the large oak trees tower over him like dark skyscrapers. A chill sifted through the air, the wintery cold settling into Danny’s skin and making his teeth chatter.
But there was some warmth. Coming from Angela’s hand, which Danny held tight. Angela, his wife, was the only loved one he had left now. His only hope in the world, his only family.
Ever since Julian had turned.
He recalled being frozen for a second, watching as Julian’s body spurted blood, sprayed the brown trunks red. And the howls coming from the zombies as they excitedly tore Julian to shreds, red saliva dripping from their open mouths.
What had the world turned into? How had this all happened? How had Danny let Julian die like that, in the worst way imaginable?
Danny walked through the next clearing, stopping next to a large tree with his wife. They sat together, got some food from their bags. A few sandwiches they’d nicked from a Tesco back at their town, as well as water from a stream they’d seen.
Whether the water was clean or not, they had no clue. But the quenching of their thirst was welcome.
And then he stepped into the clearing.
