I s this even legal ? Taryn’s frustration ratcheted up as she stared at Livia.

"Of course it is. You sold me the ring, making it my property."

If Taryn didn’t live her life trying to avoid conflict, and if Livia weren’t a tall, tattooed, badass, and incredibly hot pawnbroker, Taryn might try to take a swing at her. Instead, she just fought back tears.

She took a deep swallow to prevent a crack in her voice. It didn’t work. But you said you still have it. So why can’t I buy it back?

I didn’t say you couldn’t. I just want more information.

Taryn threw her hands in the air. They came down on the counter between the two women with a muted clap. What do you want to know?

In the face of Taryn’s climbing agitation, Livia seemed to be growing somehow calmer by the minute, despite the burgeoning line of people waiting to talk to her.

She hit a button somewhere on her counter, the action being done without her eyes ever leaving Taryn’s face. The button’s purpose became clear thirty seconds later when a young, fresh-faced kid of maybe nineteen or twenty came rocketing out of the back and ran to help the line of people.

Livia leaned forward on the counter, her tattoo-covered arms from elbow to wrist planted on the rough wood. She was eye-to-eye with Taryn. Well, I figure it’s like this. When you sold me the ring, you said you’d bought it for your girlfriend but that had ended badly. Now you want it back. So that means either. Livia extended one long finger. You are planning to give it to someone else or. She extended a second finger. You are planning to give it back to the girlfriend.

Taryn squeaked. So?

"Well, I figure, if I give you back that ring, someone is going to get hurt. Either
