"Wait, so my character’s been captured?" Rina huffed from across the table.

You failed the constitution check, Zach muttered half-apologetically, and he ducked behind the cardboard partition that separated him from the rest of the players in case she threw her dice at him. So Elanil’s unconscious. Just be glad they apparently want her alive.

She’s an elf! she exclaimed. Elves are immune to sleep spells.

It isn’t a spell, it’s drow poison. It works just like an ordinary sedative.

Drow poison breaks down in sunlight, Devin interrupted, while Rina twirled her silver elf cleric figurine between her fingers. Four players sat around a cluttered table in the middle of the shadowy, candlelit dining room: Devin, whose feisty gnome Glittergem had become something of an unlikely mentor to her character; Caitlin, who hosted a gaming channel about the adventures of Xue Qiao the vigilante ranger; and James, an accountant whose dwarf barbarian Baradin’s impulsive rage concealed his player’s careful strategies.

Our characters are outdoors, James added, and it’s the middle of the afternoon.

Not Elanil, Zach replied. She’s over here beneath a yew tree, in the shade.
