In a strange way, Zoe almost respected how ruthlessly the group of thieves snatched for her wrists and pawed greedily at her through her leather garments; at least they were being honest about their intentions. That didn’t mean she’d be merciful, of course.

Three of them crouched above her shoulders, their faces blotting out the strip of golden sky above the adobe walls and intricate mashrabiya windows of the alley as they wrestled her arms against the ground. She let her hands go limp a little in their grip, as if their clutching fingers could keep her at their mercy; the pair of youths kneeling over her waist braced their weight atop her knees, and she struggled not to laugh aloud at the exaggerated relief and triumph in the smaller one’s grin, the reassuring nod he gave the others as her kicking legs grew still.

Her inward smile faded at the sight of the larger brute’s expression, the street gang’s leader.
