Chapter 1: People Like Us
"Coffee. Black, I guess. Chamuh?"
The woman shrugged the length of her black hair over her shoulder and glanced between the young waitress and the man sitting across the diner table. His dark eyes met hers with a flicker of bemusement and she waited for him to finish the order. He didn’t: his gaze darted to the window and then the empty tables before settling upon the shadows behind the counter, the rattle of pots and pans being scrubbed behind a cloth curtain. Isabel flashed the girl an apologetic smile.
Same for him,
she concluded. The waitress nodded and stepped away without a word to leave the two of them sitting alone by the window, looking out at the overcast twilight and the snow-dusted fir trees that gave the mountain village of Abeto its name. Isabel stared away into the darkness and then at Chamuh’s reflection in the glass. His dark hair might have been longer than hers – she’d need a ruler to measure the difference – and it swept around his square jaw and hollow cheeks in feathered tufts and wild silvered streaks to contrast his light bronze skin like a lion’s mane. He hadn’t taken off his cowhide jacket, which was just as well: the sculpted muscles beneath would have drawn even more attention to what was supposed to be a nondescript arrival. However hard he tried for her sake, he couldn’t blend in. It wasn’t his nature.
She shifted her gaze to her own reflection and studied her brown jacket and the dark hair spilling down her back, her bronze skin and deep brown eyes. At a glance, they might have been either lovers or siblings, a single archetype diverging into rugged masculine angles and svelte feminine curves. That wasn’t a coincidence: she’d taught him everything she knew. A wry smile crossed her cherry lips and she pursed them together as she took out her smartphone.
What is that?
he said.
Isabel looked up from the screen to find Chamuh leaning over a table that seemed a little too small for his stature, like a child’s toy furniture. His eyes fixed the device in her hands with a suspicious glare and she offered him a reassuring smile and shake of her head.
It’s just a burner phone,
she explained. It won’t cause any trouble.
