Inside Out
Steve Taylor picks up his morning newspaper, walks out of the gate and onto the footpath. It is a beautiful fresh autumn morning.
Glancing at an article he is distracted, steps onto the road, and is hit by a car.
Taken to hospital with minor injuries, more tests were requested by a specialist. The results aren’t what Steve expected.
Standing at his bedside, the specialist gave the bad news. ‘Your scans revealed a brain tumour. Unfortunately, it is terminal: Is there a relative or someone I should call?’
‘No, that won’t be necessary, thank you. How can this happen? I haven’t been suffering any symptoms. I keep myself fit. How long do you think I have?’
‘Six months, maybe a year! I’m very sorry Mr Taylor.’
Steve was stunned. Now alone, his thoughts went to his twin brother Ray, whom he had disowned a long time ago after an argument: Their father had been a police officer for many years before he was shot dead by an armed intruder. Ray wanted revenge and chose a life of crime. Steve became reserved. He couldn’t understand why his brother mixed with gangs, spending his days breaking the law: Their mother never got over the trauma of that day and died of a heart attack. Ray was serving a hefty prison sentence and was refused permission to attend her funeral. That ended their former bond, he couldn’t bring himself to visit his brother, not in the past or present.
On reflection, he has a comfortable life and occasionally wished he’d helped his brother more in their teenage years, but that was history; now he doesn’t know if Ray is in or out of prison. Thoughts came back of being identical twins, growing up and making a pact to always watch out for each other. How easily they had grown apart?
Did he now want some sort of connection, maybe reconciliation?
This thought process plus the diagnosis brought him to the decision to try and locate his brother.
‘Perhaps Ray’s last address is somewhere in the apartment. This could take longer than I have to live!’
‘Are you okay Mr Taylor? Your Specialist would like to see you in his office. You can get dressed I’ll take you when you’re ready.’ said a nurse as she pulled the curtain around the bed.
Steve was surprised, assuming he’d have to remain in hospital considering what he’s been through.
Slowly managing to stand up and remove the gown, he carefully put on his clothes and sat waiting on the bed, until the curtain was opened.
‘In you get.’ said the nurse, ‘Your chariot awaits; I’m taking you to the doctor!’
Steve had never sat in a wheelchair and didn’t think it necessary but hadn’t the energy to complain. Just as well because the trip through the corridor was further than expected.
‘I’ll leave you here.’ said the nurse.
Steve stood up and off she went, back down the corridor pushing the empty wheelchair.
He knocked on the door before walking into the office and is greeted with a hand-shake.
‘Please sit down Mr Taylor,
