The music was loud. Lights flashed around the room. Lisa and I danced through most of the night. Drinks flowed from scantily dressed bar staff.

I’d put money behind the bar for my invited friends but the place was packed.

This would be the last time I can let my hair down and flirt if I felt the need.

Tomorrow I’d be getting married to Jack in a registry office.

I don’t want to think about that I’m having too much fun.

I can’t remember the last time Lisa and I had a girly night out in town. We’ve been friends forever. She is such a beauty and recently married Adam a smashing guy, so I was delighted she wanted to leave him for the evening.

It wasn’t long before we had plenty of people dancing with us and wanting to buy us drinks.

I was driving, so reluctantly refused.

So many men, so little time came to mind.

We left the Disco and walked to my car giggling like school girls.

We drove to the end of the road that led to a T junction. I pulled to the center of the road to make a U-turn. Crash…

I opened my eyes to face a policewoman. I was in a hospital bed. I couldn’t breathe. I started to cry but the pain was so bad I had to make myself stop.

"You’ve been in a motor accident. You had to be cut out of the car. You’re a very lucky lady to survive with just internal bruising.

I am WPC Hart and I need to ask you some questions about last night.

Toni, were you drinking at the Disco?"

I tried to take a deep breath but the pain was intense.

No. I wouldn’t have done that. I said.

Did you use your hand brake when you stopped in the middle of the road to do a U-turn?

"I really can’t remember, so I can’t say, probably not, because I’ve made that U-turn many times and use foot control.

Please tell me, is my friend Lisa alright? I can’t remember a thing about the crash nothing at all! I whispered."

Perhaps WPC Hart didn’t hear my question because she stood up.

I may need to take another statement in a day or two. Thank you Toni. she said turning away.

A young nurse stood next to me, ready to give me something for the pain.

Your friend Lisa is at the end of this ward. Sorry I can’t tell you more than that. she said.

I should be getting married today! Will I be able to go home?

Sorry dear. said the nurse. You have a visitor, are you up to seeing your fiancé?

I hesitated for a split second but without waiting for the answer, Jack appeared at the side of my bed. He pulled up a chair and sat next to me.
