Larry Wade Livingston

Larry Wade Livingston was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in the month of November. He grew up traveling state to state only living in cities sometimes for only a few short weeks. His step-dad was an over the road truck driver which allowed him to attend countless schools throughout his entire childhood. Always being the new kid in school he really had no friends. He found that by writing stories it occupied his mind and he could create his own little world. It was a world that he could control and was accepted. I hope you enjoy the stories that Mister Livingston still amuses himself with as an adult. He writes humorous tales to deep complicated ones and covers many subject matters. If you enjoy his tales and downhome style, you can also find other books by Larry Wade Livingston at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Other books by Larry Wade Livingston The Poetic Storyteller. DEDICATION

I would like to thank so many people. I have to give thanks first and foremost to Connie Hughes. She was my muse and I’m still sad from her passing. She believed in me when I didn’t. She helped me to develop my writing and my own confidence in writing.

I have to give a special thanks to my mother Goldie Lee Miller and my aunt Ann Parsons. They both were writers in their own ways. It’s sad that their talents were never able to make it to the public to read. I have to give a tremendous thanks to my friends. They always stand by my side and I love them for their support.

I hope my books can bring some emotions to the readers. If through my writings I can have a reader laugh, cry, get angry, feel sad or jump for joy, or even hate it, I’ve accomplished what I intended to do. To connect to the reader is the goal of anyone that writes. I hope I have caused you, the reader, to be moved by any of your many emotions.

FACTS FROM PANADONIA AND RETURN TO PANADONIA

Garret stepped out of the transportation cubical and started walking down the familiar deer trial he had walked for years. He walked through the forest hoping that Panadonia would be restored under Queen Annabella’s rule. He reached the tree line and entered the meadow that was part of his family’s farm.

He saw his father tilling the soil in the lower forty using the new tractor. The cows were in the upper pasture grazing. Garret walked past the farms two barns and entered his home. Garret’s mother squealed with delight seeing her son had returned.

I’m glad your home son. How were things in Panadonia? Was Anna disappointed that you didn’t stay with her? Beth asked.

"She was saddened by my decision as were her mother and brothers. I told her I would visit three times a year. Once during each of the three Mercury Retrogrades. I made it clear that there may be times I couldn’t come depending on where I would be because of company business.

You know there’s only three transportation tubes and there only useable during the retrogrades. There located in Sydney, Australia, Johannesburg, South Africa and ours here in Ashland, Oregon. I also told Anna, if she had a major issue arise, she could come here to the farmhouse and ask for my help."

Welcome home son, Garret’s father said as he walked into the house.

Hello dad, it’s good to be home. This time I’m here to stay for a while. That is if your offer for me to live in the apartment above the new barn is still available.

Of course, it is. I hired a ranch hand and he said he wanted to live in his fifth wheel. I told him he could park it around back. I had a pad installed with all the amenities he needs to hook everything up. It has water, electricity and sewer. I had it put in because Haywood might want to come and visit. He and Lilly bought a travel trailer so they could see America at their own pace.

Jack and Beth Clearwater were extremely proud of their son Garret. After all he was the youngest person to graduate from MIT in Cambridge. Haywood Clearwater and his wife had already informed Jack that they were going to visit next summer.

"That’s great news, I enjoyed living with them while I was going to MIT for six years. I miss Cambridge a little and Kyle, my Uber driver. I want to see their boy, Denver again, he’s a hoot and a half.

I’ll take my stuff from my bedroom and move it into the apartment. Does it have everything I need dad? I talking water, sewer and cable ready hookup?"

Yes, I’m not stupid son, I installed a surprise for you. You’ll see it when you enter. Here’s the key, the doors locked.

Thank you, dad, Garret said as he went into his bedroom and collected his items.

Garret took some clothes up to his apartment and entered. He was amazed to see that his father had installed a 75-inch flat screen television on the wall for him. Garret went back to the house and thanked his dad for the wonderful gift.

After Garret had all his belongings transferred to the apartment, he sat down and had dinner with his family. When they finished eating, they started to talk about Garret’s future.

What are your plans for your future son? Are you going to contact the firms that offered you a job after graduating? Jack asked.

"I am going to check back with them and see if there are any positions still open. If not, I’ll send my resume to new contacts. My biggest fear is that I will have to move. There’s nothing here in the Rouge Valley for someone with my qualifications.

The only places in Oregon would be the Kingsley Field Air National Guard Base, in Klamath Falls. The other one is the Oregon National Guard in Portland, Oregon. Even then, they only offer jobs that aren’t really in my wheelhouse, but I could be useful for either one in many ways."

I’m glad to hear you want to get a job and support yourself. Your mother and I know you will have to move no matter where you find employment. That’s not what we want, but we understand completely. We want you to pursue a job that’s going to embrace your talents and one that will help solve important issues. Do not allow yourself to refuse a job because of your mother and me.

Thank you, dad. I know you want me to stay here at home, but I knew any job I would truly want, would be out of state. I’m glad to hear that if that is the case, I have your blessing to move. That’s a heavy burden off my shoulders. I was worried about how I would tell you if I did get a job out of state.

Garret was a member of Mensa. He had graduated from MIT at the age of seventeen. Even though his IQ would vary somewhat, it was always over 152. He spent six years at MIT because he wanted to earn his Masters in Engineering and PhD in Physics.

After their conversation Garret sent E-mails to the firms that had offered him a job after graduating. He was hoping one of them would still have an opening for him. He didn’t really want to send his resume out to a bunch of new companies, because the ones he originally sent it too, were the ones he thought would be best for him.

That afternoon Garret helped his father with tilling and feeding the cows. He enjoyed being back on the farm and working with his father. He was able to forget about Panadonia that afternoon. That was pure enjoyment to not be burdened about Queen Annabella and the situation he had just left behind.

The next morning the phone rang and Garret answered it, hello.

Good morning, is Garret Clearwater there? I’m Shasta Hills and I’m the Human Resource Manager at Templeton Futures. We’re a think tank that addresses every aspect of subjects that effects how we live. We are also aligned with Templeton Laboratories. We design things such as rocket propulsion systems to working on complicated physics theories.

Good morning, miss Hills. I’m Garret Clearwater and I’m glad to hear from Templeton Futures. I am aware of your reputation and many of the projects your firm has been involved with over the years. How may I help you?

We would like to conduct an interview with you next week for an open position we have available for someone with your abilities. Would you be interested in coming to Houston, Texas and take the time for an interview?

Yes, I certainly would. What time and where do I go, once I’m in Houston?

I will arrange your flight to and from Medford, Oregon to Houston. There will be a company car waiting for you when you arrive. Look for Samuel Jones holding a sign with your name on it. He’s our driver at Templeton. I will make your hotel reservations at the Hyatt. Just to be clear, we will cover all the cost of your flights and accommodations. I’ll E-mail your flight, time and dates later today, after I make them. We’re excited to meet with you Mr. Clearwater. We will see you when you arrive, have a nice day.

Garret hung up the receiver and jumped for joy.

I’ve got an interview with Templeton Futures/ Laboratories. They’re one of the best companies in the country. They’re the first pick on my list of companies I sent my resume to.

Where are they located son? Beth asked.

    They’re in Houston, Texas.

Well at least you’ll be close to Uncle Troy, you won’t be alone with strangers.

Templeton sends it’s people all around the world to serve as consultants on every kind of projects you can think of. They do the ground work studies for dams, hydroelectrical systems and plotting the course of satellites and asteroids. I can’t wait to be interviewed by them. It’s my dream job and I have to nail this meeting.

Jack entered the room from the master bedroom and sat down at the kitchen table.

Why didn’t someone wake me up? I never sleep this late; I’ve got work to do. Give me some breakfast mother so I can get to work.

It’s coming honey, hang on to your hat for a second. Beth said as she sat a plate of food in front of him.

Jack wolfed down the eggs, hash browns and bacon as fast as he could.

Slow down honey, a couple of minutes won’t make that big of a difference. Besides, Garret has an interview for a job in Houston, Texas.

Really, son? That’s great. Is it with a company that you wanted from the beginning?

Yes, dad. It’s the one I wanted to reply the most, Templeton Futures.

They’re located in Houston, Texas, close to your brother Troy. Beth said.

That’s great, son. I hope you kill the interview with their representatives at Human Resources.

I’m confident dad. Give me a minute and I’ll help you in the lower field. I’ll get the old tractor and till with you for the day.

Thank you, son. That will help to make up for the late start today and maybe even finish before dark. I’ll go and get started while you gas up the old tractor and attach the disc. You might have to squirt some starter fluid in the carburetor to get it to turn over and start.

Thanks dad, I’ll see you out there in a few." Garret said as he left the kitchen and walked towards the barn to get his older tractor.

As Garret was squirting starting fluid in the tractor’s carburetor; a Ram Dodge, 4-wheel drive pickup, pulled around to the back of the barn towing a fifth wheel. Garret stopped what he was doing and went to see if this was the man his father had hired to be a ranch hand.

Hello, may I help you? Garret asked.

Howdy, I’m Duston Sands. I’m the new ranch hand that Mr. Jack Clearwater hired. May I ask who you are young man?

I’m Garret Clearwater, his son. He mentioned he had hired a man to help out, but never said a name.

I see you father is tilling the lower field. He showed me where all the hookups are located. I’ll unhook my rig and make my connections. As soon as I finish hooking up the fifth wheel, I’ll go and meet your father and see what he needs me to do today.

Okay, I’m on my way to help him with the tilling. I’ll tell him you’re here and will be along shortly after you get settled.

Thank you, Garret, I appreciate you doing that.

Garret went back and continued getting his tractor ready to go to work. He had filled the tank with diesel and got it to start. He slowly backed up to the disc attachment and made the connection. He lifted the discs up off the ground and drove out of the barn and joined his dad in the field.

It wasn’t long that Duston walked out into the field and made contact with Jack. They talked a few minutes, then Jack motioned for Garret to come over to them. Garret drove over to his dad and stopped alongside him.

Son, let Duston take over the tilling for you. I need you to go to the Grange Co-op in Medford and pick up ten fifty-pound bags of enriched corn feed. I want to see if that will help the cows produce more. Duston say’s it seemed to help at the last ranch he worked at. It won’t hurt to try it and see what happens.

Okay dad, Garret said as he jumped down from the tractor and Duston climbed up and sat down behind the wheel.

Garret walked back to the house and got the truck keys. He explained to his mother what he was going to do and informed her about Duston setting up his fifth-wheel. Garret went to his father’s new truck and unlocked it. He stepped on the running board and slid into the leather seat.

This was the first time Garret had ever driven the new truck. His father had bought it during the summer when Garret was traveling with Queen Annabella and staying in Panadonia. He started the Big Horn Dodge truck and he listened to the diesel engine purring smoothly. He put it in gear and drove down the driveway and onto the paved road.

He arrived at the Grange Co-op and backed up to the loading dock. He went inside and purchased the bags of corn that his father had expressed. The dock person loaded the bags into Garret’s truck and then he shut the tailgate.

Garret thanked the man and slowly pulled away from the store and headed home on I-5. When he arrived home, he drove the truck into the new barn. He wasn’t sure what his dad wanted to do or put the bags, so he thought he would leave it until he found out what his father wanted.

It was late afternoon as Jack and Duston entered the house and sat down at the kitchen table.

The lower field is tilled, thanks to the extra help. How soon till dinner honey? Jack asked.

Maybe an hour, not much more than that for sure. Beth said.

What did you want me to do with the bags of corn dad? Garret asked.

Stack it along the west wall for now in the new barn.

Okay dad, I’ll go and do it now before dinner.

Garret turned and started walking towards the front door.

Whoa Garret, let me do that. I’m going to go and wash up at my place anyway. It will only take a minute or two to unload ten bags. Duston said.

Thank you, Duston. That’s very nice of you. Are you sure you don’t want me to help?

No, you stay here with your family. I know you’ve been away for some time and your parents want to spend time with you. I’ll be back in an hour and we can all get to know one another a little better after dinner. Duston said.

I think I’ll go to my apartment and take a shower and change into some clean clothes as well. Garret said.

Heck, I guess I will take a bath myself. Everyone else is. I’ll leave the kitchen to you honey and you can work at your own pace without being interrupted. Jack said as he entered the bathroom.

    CAMBRIDGE

Haywood, there’s something wrong with Denver. He won’t stop crying and he keeps holding his stomach. Lilly said loudly.

Haywood came quickly and examined his son. He didn’t see any injuries visibly on Denver’s body. That made him think of something internally and that could be deadly.

I’m taking him to the hospital’s emergency room. It’s obvious that’s something is wrong with him. Haywood said.

Haywood helped his wife and son into their truck and drove them to the Cambridge Medical Center. Haywood parked the truck and carried Denver into the emergency room. They walked up to the admission desk and explained their situation to the nurse on duty. They were lucky, the waiting room was empty, so they got to see a doctor immediately.

Hello, I’m Dr. Tim Redding. What seems to be the problem with your boy

He’s holding his stomach and won’t stop crying. He keeps acting in a way that it hurts. Lilly said.

Let me have a look at the little fella, the doctor said as he started his evaluation of Denver.

What do you think it might be? Lilly asked.

I don’t know at the moment. I’m just checking everything out right now. Usually its only gas, but it could be an intestinal blockage. I’d like to get a couple of X-rays so I can rule out any kind of blockage. If its gas, I will be able to spot that. Either way, we’ll see what’s going on in his belly.

The doctor called for a nurse and she took Denver to the Imagery Department so he could have the X-rays taken. Denver returned in less than twenty-minutes and he looked better than when he left.

Good news Mr. and Mrs. Clearwater. It was only built-up gas and not a blockage. I gave him some medication to help him release the gas. I’m sure he will be fine. He has already polluted the hallway coming back to the room. Dr. Redding said with a chuckle.

Haywood stopped at the admittance counter and paid his co-pay for the emergency room visit. On the way home Denver couldn’t help but fill the cab with unwanted aromas. Haywood and Lilly both had to roll down their windows for the entire ride home. Denver couldn’t understand why his mother and father kept laughing every time he let out gas.

As Haywood and Lilly entered their home, the phone rang. Lilly answered it and called out to her husband, Its Troy, Haywood.

He came and took the receiver from her and held it up to his ear.

    What’s happening in Texas, brother?

Not much. I was thinking about going out to Oregon next month. I’m thinking middle of August. I know it’s only three weeks away and the summer is about to end. I hear you bought a new trailer and you wanted to travel across the country. Well, here’s your chance, brother. You’ve got one of those lazy government jobs. You can come and go at will. I know you have six-weeks’ vacation, because you’re in management. What do you say? You can stop and pick me up and then continue to Oregon.

Let me talk it over with Lilly first. I’ll call you back in a few days and let you know one way or the other.

Sounds good to me, Haywood. Troy said as he hung up.

What did your brother want, honey?

He wants us to drive out to Jack and Beth’s place and have a family reunion it sounds like.

You have the available time, don’t you?

"Yes, but I wanted us to travel across the country and stop wherever we wanted and stay as long as we wanted. I don’t want to drive straight through to Oregon and be pressured to get to Jack’s place.

Winters just a few months from now and I need to start calculating how much salt and deicer to order. I need to check on how many chains and tires the bus fleet needs. I need to have a department head meeting and get everyone on board with gearing up for winter."

Sounds like you’re finding ways not to go to Oregon. If you don’t want to go, just say no to Troy and be done with it.

You may be right baby; I’ll call Troy tomorrow and tell him I’ve decided to stay home and prepare the city transportation system for the winter ahead.

    ASHLAND, OREGON

Next morning Garret woke to being shaken by his mother.

You have a phone call from a lady who says her name is Shasta Hills, Beth said.

Garret jumped out of bed and picked up the receiver that was lying on the kitchen counter.

Good morning, miss Hills, this is Garret Clearwater.

Hello again Mr. Clearwater. I sent you an E-mail with the information you need to travel to and from Medford and Houston. Your flight leaves the Medford International Airport at 6 AM tomorrow morning and you will arrive in Houston at 2 PM. There’s a small layover in Portland. I will see you tomorrow afternoon, have a nice flight. Don’t forget to look for Samuel at the airport.

Thank you, I will see you then. Garret said as he hung up the receiver.

He went to his computer and printed out the E-mail with the information on his flights, time and hotel. He got dressed and ate his breakfast. He walked out onto the front porch and saw Duston and his father tossing bales of hay off the farms trailer for the cows.

Garret knew that the herd of milk cows would be brought up for milking in an hour or two. He went into the old barn and got the milking machines set in place at each stall. He took it upon himself to grab a few of the bags he had bought the day before and spread the kernels in the feeding trough. He closed all the gates that would have allowed the cows to escape being herded into the barn’s milking area.

As he shut and locked the last gate that needed to be shut, Duston entered the barn.

Your dad wanted me to get the milking machines and corn feed ready for the cows. We’re going to push them this way in an hour.

I’ve already done everything that’s needed to bring the herd into the barn.

Duston looked things over and nodded his head.

Great job Garret. I can tell your father has taught you well in how to be a successful farmer or rancher.

He’s taught me everything I know.

I’ll go and tell him you’ve gotten everything ready for us to bring the herd.

After the cows had been milked and were back out in the pasture, Garret turned on his computer and started learning everything there was about Templeton Futures and their laboratories.

Next morning Garret’s alarm clock sounded and he got out of bed and glared at its hands.

Four AM already, Garret said as his feet touched the floor.

He went and took a hot shower and dressed in an appropriate way to be interviewed by a potential employer. His mother was up and fixing pancakes and bacon for Garret and Jack’s breakfast.

Jack was already dressed and sitting at the kitchen table sipping coffee from his favorite cup. Beth sat two plates of food down in front of her favorite two men. She made herself a small saucer of bacon and a piece of toast.

After eating their breakfast, Garret said good-bye to his mother and Jack drove him to Medford. He shook his dad’s hand and told him he would be back the following
