    DEDICATION

I have loved science fiction since I was a small boy. I grew up watching the original black and white movies of The Mummy, The Blob, Frankenstein and all the other classics. I fell in love with writers like Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robin Cook, Michael Crichton and Ray Bradbury. The only way I can explain why I so deeply love science fiction is this.

There are no limits, no rules and no bounds to what you can imagine. If you can dream it or believe it possible it can be accepted. Where else can you create a seven headed monster with 10 legs or a virus that only kills the hate in people while at the same time multiplies the love sensors in them. Travel to far away worlds in space or hidden worlds to the center of the earth.

I dedicate this book to all that came before me that taught the magic, illusion and how escapism is a journey into imagination. Realism is what we live in and with it comes stress and everyday pressure. Science fiction is an escape mechanism to free our minds from our daily anxiety.

Thank you, science fiction writers, one and all. Your works have inspired me through out my life. Thank you, illustrators, for your fantastic art works and drawings that enhance the works of the writers. I also want to thank my friend Connie Hughes for her help in so many ways. A special thanks to my friend Ernest Peters who helped me in editing.

    CHARACTERS

    THE ALIGNMENT

John and Clara Johnson live in a New York penthouse that overlooks Central Park. He is a doctor and she is a practicing Corporate attorney. The rapid pace and intensity of the busy city was taking its toll on the both of them.

Their seven-year-old son Travis suffered from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). He was enrolled in a special school that offered both a treatment center and typical traditional schooling.

Travis hated it there because the other students would tease him and call him awful names. Since he was withdrawn and a loner, the harassment only made him feel more of an outcast than he already felt.

No matter how many times his parents complained to the school’s principle and the school board, it had no effect on the situation. There weren’t any other places to enroll Travis that offered both treatment and schooling.

Because of the tension and lack of seeing some kind of solution to help their son, they considered moving out of the city. They had the funds to quit their jobs and retire to the countryside in upper New York state.

Clara found Sunset Agency, they provided people with special need individuals a suitable treatment center. Except where he was enrolled, the only other option was private care.

The Johnsons talked it over and made the decision to hire Mary Turner from among the agency’s best applicants. Miss Turner was a certified teacher and caregiver with New York credentials. She also was in a position to be a live-in caretaker and willing to relocate. When Travis was introduced to Mary, they hit it off immediately.

As Clara was spearheading the issue with Sunset Agency, John had been up state working with a realtor. He had found a beautiful three-bedroom home with a guest house set on five acres boarding the forest.

Carla went and saw the home and literally fell in love with it immediately. John met Mary Turner and he approved of her as Clara had.

Once they had cleared escrow, they made the heartfelt decision to walk into work on Monday morning and quit their respective jobs.

Clara gave Mary a key to the guest house and the address. Clara wrote out a check for three-thousand dollars to help Mary with her moving costs. It was finally all coming together and smiles flowed across the faces of the four of them.

For the next couple of weeks, Mary took on the task of packing and preparing for the move. Where-as the Johnsons hired the Bekins Moving company.

Mary had friends help her in loading a U-Haul van. It was a sunny Sunday afternoon when all concerned arrived at the new home at the same time, as if planned.

John paid the Bekins movers some extra money to unload Mary’s furniture and take it into the guest house for her, Clara had already taken care of activating the phone, cable, gas and electricity so they would be available at their arrival.

The realtor drove up and introduced himself to everyone. He had been the person that oversaw the individuals that did the installations. He handed John the paperwork from the various entities. He welcomed them to the area, then said is farewells and departed.

As the sun was starting to set it was decided that they would go into town and have dinner. They invited Mary to come along as well, since she was now going to be part of the family.

It only took a few minutes to drive in to Lyons Falls, New York and find the one and only eating establishment. A small diner type of place; but the food was excellent and the waitress friendly.

It had been a long and eventful day. Falling asleep was easy and the quietness of the countryside was phenomenal.

The Johnson family awoke to the sound of birds singing and a front yard hosting a herd of deer. What a sight for Travis as his eyes opened wide and a grin engulfed his entire face. This was indeed the place for him and his parents. What could ever be more amazing than the new world that Travis was now admiring?

Mary and Travis were settling into a mourning routine of school and therapy. That left time for Travis to explore the outside world. He mostly played in the front or back yards; but as the weeks passed, he allowed himself to extend his boundaries.

One day Travis saw a fawn standing on the perimeter of the forest. He had seen adult deer during the time he had lived there. However, he hadn’t seen a baby deer with all of its spots.

He was mesmerized by the little creature and he moved closer to get a better look. The fawn stood still and stared as Travis crept closer and closer. When he was approximately ten feet from the animal, its mother jumped out and she and her offspring disappeared into the thick forest underbrush.

Travis spent the next few days looking and hoping that the fawn would return. It was five days later when Travis went outside and saw the fawn with its mother eating from the Johnsons garden. He approached slowly with his hand outstretched, palm down. The mother deer stood erect and watched intensely.

Travis got closer than before and the fawn took one step forward and licked the back of his hand. In return, Travis rubbed the top of the young deer’s head and scratched behind its ears. As Travis looked into the eyes of the fawn, it too was looking into his. At that moment a bond was sealed between the two of them.

The mother somehow sensed that her offspring and this human were connected. She walked over to the both of them. Travis was then privileged to pet and scratch her head and ears as well.

Travis discovered he had the ability to connect with animals. Over the next several weeks he was petting rabbits, skunks, squirrels and beavers. His parents looked on in amazement.

At first, they were concerned for his safety; but soon they realized he was in no danger. They also observed that he was happier than ever before and he glowed with enthusiasm.

April the second came and Travis celebrated his eighth birthday with his parents and his animal friends. Mary was there as well. Somehow the three adults were accepted by the animals and they were allowed to touch and pet them. It might well be that since they were accepted by Travis, (the adults) could be trusted just like Travis.

The fawn had lost its spots and responded to the name Travis had given him, Peace. It was what he felt that day when the two of them bonded. Peace was growing and losing that cuteness and adorable look of a new born. However, Travis loved what was in the heart and soul of Peace. Their friendship grew more as the days went by.

June first came and school was now closed for summer vacation. Mary still had to work with Travis for his ADD and ADHD. He had no symptoms when with his animal friends; but still had issues when it came to interacting with people or social situations.

Even though he had improved greatly, he still needed continuous therapy sessions for the real world that he would have to address in the future.

Travis felt so secure when with the animals that one day he and Peace decided to go on a hike. They entered the deep forest for the first time ever together.

They followed a deer trail for about a mile. Travis loved looking straight up as trees reached for the skies. The sound of birds singing echoed throughout the surrounding woods. It was sweet music to his ears.

He put his hand on the back of Peace and went back the way that they had come. As they cleared the tree line Clara was standing there with concern on her face. I was calling for you. Where have you been Travis?) she asked.

I went for a walk with Peace deep into the forest he answered.

I was worried about you. Please tell someone when you want to explore; but don’t go too far into the woods and be careful his mom replied.

His parents weren’t worried about him playing in the woods because they knew his relationship with all the animals. They just wanted to know when he was going on a hike so they didn’t have to worry if he had just disappeared.

Travis continued to go hiking in the forest and each time he went a little deeper. He was approximately two miles from his home when he heard a strange noise off to his right. He snapped his head in that direction; but saw nothing.

Peace walked into the underbrush leaving Travis standing alone. After a couple of minutes Peace returned with a young girl walking alongside him. She looked frightened and leery; but stood her ground behind Peace. Travis smiled at her and said, hello, my name is Travis, what’s your name?

She looked at the ground and with heavy reservation in her voice she slowly raised her head and answered, Serenity.

Don’t be afraid, I won’t hurt you. Where do you live? Is your house close by? Do you get along with animals too? Travis asked.

Serenity hesitated and stammered to finally say I live in the forest and I am friends with the animals. They protect me from the dangerous ones, like bears and wolfs. I see you too have a relationship with the animals. If they trust you, then I can as well. Follow me and I will show you where I live; but you can’t tell anyone about me or where I live. Travis nodded and smiled.

Travis followed her as Peace walked in front leading the way for the both of them. It wasn’t long until they came to a cave. Peace walked through the opening and they entered through it as well. Travis was amazed to see rabbits, squirrels and several small animals in the cave.

Travis studied Serenity as she moved about the huge cavern. He noticed she was about five years older than himself. She stood several inches taller than him and she had long blonde hair that flowed down to her waist. She had caramel colored skin and had the biggest green eyes he’d ever seen. He didn’t know why; but he felt at ease and tranquil around her.

There was a firepit, a bed of dried moss to sleep on and many odds and ends which looked as if collected by Serenity over time. There were spoons, forks, plates and the kinds of things you would see left behind by campers and hunters.

Travis saw no signs of any other person ever being present in Serenity’s cave home. He wondered why she was living not only in a cave; but deep in the forest. He could see that she was nervous and apprehensive, but he felt she wanted and needed human companionship.

Travis noticed that Serenity lacked social skills and didn’t know how to truly have an intellectual conversation. Travis decided to inquire about her and let that dictate the conversations.

She talked for a couple of hours about how she befriended the animals and how they protected her. She spoke of a beautiful pond where she swam and got her water. It was feed by an artesian well that bubbled up even deeper in the woods. She did finally say that she wanted a friend to talk to and interact with. However, she said nothing about how she came to live in the forest all alone.

Travis told her he would be her friend and that he would not reveal her existence. He promised that he would come and see her often and bring her some food.

She said that would be fine; but she didn’t know of any other food other than what she found in the forest. Travis smiled and stated she was in for a treat like she had never tasted before. He and Peace left on the long journey back to his house.

It was dusk by the time he arrived back to his home. Needless to say, his parents were upset.

I was just getting ready to go out and look for you young man his father said. "If you continue to be out late and missing dinner; your mom and I will ground you and not allow you to play with your animal friends or go into the forest. Is that clear son?) his dad continued.

Yes sir replied Travis in a sheepish voice.

Okay, your dinner is on the table. I just heated it up for you said his mother.

Travis knew that he had to be really careful from now on. He would have to watch the time and beware of saying something that would cause suspicion to what he was doing in the woods all the time. His time was going to be limited soon because school was about to start up again. That would only give him the afternoons, except for weekends.

Summer came to an end and the cold weather slowly edged its way into the upper New York area. The snow began to fall and for the first time since meeting Serenity he had to watch out that his footsteps didn’t lead anyone to where Serenity lived.

Travis thought it would be best if he went to Serenity and explained that it would be safer if he only came on Saturdays, until spring.

He told his parents he and Peace were going into the forest and that he would be back by late afternoon. They said fine, so he and Peace departed on their hike into the woods.

He had only traveled about a quarter of a mile when he saw Serenity standing in the middle of the deer trail. He was surprised and relieved at the same time. She informed Travis about the same exact concern he had about his footprints revealing her existence. They decided on Saturdays only for the winter and that Travis would use extreme measures to conceal his movements.

Mary noticed that all the progress she had with Travis now seemed to be eroding away. Travis was suffering from anxiety and small panic attacks. He was worried about how Serenity was doing. He also hadn’t seen Peace in several weeks. The truth is, he was improving greatly with his ADD and ADHD conditions. In fact, his medications were working extremely well since he met Serenity.

Mary began to question her teaching methods and her ability to connect to Travis. She was blaming herself for what she perceived to be her fault. If she only knew what was really behind Travis’s mood swings. Mary worked even harder on her therapeutic skills hoping she could find a breakout formula to be successful.

Travis hadn’t been to see Serenity in three weeks due to heavy snow, (three-feet). However, the snow had melted some and was now only about fourteen inches deep. Travis informed his parents he was going to play in the woods. They were hesitant; but finally agreed to his request.

Travis didn’t have to worry much about leaving a trail. The deer path was virtually beaten down to packed snow by animals using it. He left no prints that could be followed. He arrived at the caves opening and quickly entered in a jovial mood to see his friend.

Travis was stunned to see Serenity caring for Peace, who had an arrow sticking out of his shoulder. She had part of a sixteen-inch metal rod resting in a small fire. Travis watched as she pulled the arrow from Peace’s shoulder and then took the heated rod and cauterized the wound.

Peace flinched and let out a loud groan, but then he laid quietly with heavy breathing. Serenity rubbed a salve on the wound and set a bowl of water next to the mouth of Peace.

    What happened Serenity? Travis asked.

    Hunters, she replied.

This information added to Travis’s emotional state. He became lethargic and withdrawn. Serenity noticed the facial transformation instantly. It worried her that he could switch moods so rapidly. She talked calmly and comforted him and he slowly returned to a more reasonable state of mind.

Is Peace going to die? Travis asked.

No. He’s going to be fine after he gets some rest, Serenity said.

That made Travis smile and breathe a sigh of relief. If anything would ever happen to his friend or Peace it would be devastating to his mental condition.

I won’t return until spring. I can’t risk putting you or the animals in danger from hunters. I know you will take care of Peace, but you be careful and stay safe until we met again. He left in a sad mood; but knew it was the best thing for all concerned.

As Travis made his way back home, he came in contact with two hunters. The two men made Him leery and afraid. Their compound bows made him mad because he knew they could kill Peace and other animal friends of Serenity and him.

Hey kid. Seen any dear around? belted out one of the men.

No! I’ve never seen a deer out here he answered.

One of the men approached Travis as if he was going to grab him. Then out of nowhere a bobcat leaped onto the back of the man and bit him in the neck. As fast as it happened the cat disappeared into the forest underbrush.

The other man dropped to the ground and started attending to his companions wound. It was indeed a deep wound and was bleeding heavily. Once the bleeding was under control the two men started back to their vehicle. The hospital was 20 to 25 miles away, so they hurried the best they could.

Travis stood there quietly still in shock. He glanced to his right and saw the bobcat sitting and watching him. Travis couldn’t run or yell. He was like a statue, just frozen. The bobcat advanced toward him with its small tail flickering. Much to Travis’s surprise the cat laid down next to him and began to lick his pant leg.

Travis slowly reached down and touched the head of the bobcat. He then heard a loud purring sound. The cat rolled over on its back so Travis started rubbing its belly. The cat purred even louder and enjoyed every second of the attention. Finally, Travis patted the cats head and resumed his hike back to his home.

The cat walked alongside Travis right up to the time he reached the tree line. Then he rubbed up against Travis’ leg one more time and slowly disappeared back into the woods. Travis knew he had a way with animals; but he had never thought about having the ability to befriend more dangerous ones than he already had.

A feeling of accomplishment surged through his body. He felt special for the first time in his life; He felt self-worth and no longer self-denigration. As he walked into the house his parents and Mary noticed his uplifting attitude immediately.

If they only knew just how high he was flying. This day was the most important day of young Travis’s life thus far. He knew that; but it would take the three adults a few more weeks to really understand it.

As the family sat and talked at the dinner table while eating; Travis explained about his encounter with the two hunters. He did however leave out being frightened and the bobcat incident. He just said that they asked about deer in the area and then they went on with their hunting.

After a couple of weeks, a smile from ear to ear appeared across Travis’s face. There along the tree line stood Peace and the bobcat together. He was beginning to formulate that this forest not only was a neat place; but a very special one indeed.

There was something unique about the forest and Serenity. He had to have a conversation with Serenity about all the secrets that existed in the forest. He wasn’t frightened or afraid, he knew in his heart that everything would be fine and amazing.

Finally, winter came to an end. As the sun shined in the blue-sky Travis got permission to go on a nature hike in the woods. He walked slowly across the meadow and once reaching the trees he took off at a jog like pace. He couldn’t wait to see Serenity, Peace and all the other animals.

When he reached the opening of Serenity’s cave there were almost 50 animals surrounding it. The animals stepped back making an opening for Travis to enter and see Serenity. She was laying on her dried moss bed and looking like a person on deaths door.

He ran to her and knelt down beside her. He clasped her hand and asked, What’s wrong, are you hurt?

I don’t know, I have a fever and I haven’t eaten in three days, she said.

You may have the flu, so I’ll go home and get some medications for you. I will be back soon. He left in a hurry, virtually running the entire way.

When he reached his home, he entered quietly and acted as normal as he could. He went to the bathroom and opened up the medicine cabinet. He took some Nyquil, aspirin and some Sudafed. He put all of it in his coat pockets.

The sun was still high in the sky; but it was still nippy outside and Travis could see his breath when he exhaled as running back to Serenity. The first thing he did was to give her a full Nyquil cup size of the green liquid. Peace and the bobcat laid on either side of her helping to keep her warm.

As Travis sat there holding her hand she fell into a deep restful sleep. She looked so content and tranquil as she slept. Travis didn’t want to wake her; but he had to return home because the sun was setting.

He put the bottle of Nyquil in her hand and put the little cup on the top. He knew she would know what to do. Sadly, he left the cave. With the bobcat alongside him the whole way, Travis walked back to the tree line.

Once there Travis bent down and patted the cat’s head. You’re a good cat. I’ve got to give you a noble name. How do you feel about, Little King? he asked. With that said Travis started walking across the meadow.

The next day Travis took an apple, banana and an unopened tube of Ritz crackers for Serenity. He had been taking food to her ever since he had meet her. He said good bye to his parents and headed out to rendezvous with Serenity.

All was quiet as he approached the cave’s opening. He entered to see Serenity making a salad from many different greens she had collected from the forest. She smiled as Travis came closer to her. She embraced him with a big hug. That was the first time she had ever touched him other than touching hands. A warm sensation ran through Travis body and he felt something strange in a good way.

You look great! Thank goodness! Travis said.

I feel wonderful and alive. The green water you gave me must be magical, because the more I drank, the better I felt. Thank you so much for bringing it for me, she stated.

Travis was relieved that she was well and back to her usual self. He asked her if they could talk about her past and why she lived there alone.

I suppose you have a right to know completely why the things are the way they are she said. She sat down across from him and took a sip of water from an old metal cup that she had found a long time ago. She took a deep sigh and began telling her story.

"I woke up here in the forest 12 winters ago. I was in a large cavern behind a waterfall. I have no memory of how I arrived there. I also have no memory of anything prior to wakening up there. All I know is that I looked exactly the way you see me now. There has been no change in my appearance.

The cavern was too big and I couldn’t heat it properly. It was also too musky and damp. I explored the forest and found this cave. It’s much more comfortable and easier to maintain. Over the many winters I have seen countless people; but have never talked to them, nor allowed them to see me.

I don’t know how I knew to speak the language; but I understood what was being said when I overheard hunters talking. I saw them kill deer and other animals. I knew they were dangerous and decided never to reveal myself to them.

There was a day when a hunter shot a buck; but it ran away. They looked for it; but as it grew dark, they gave up. I approached the wounded deer as it was laying on the ground unable to move. I nursed it back to health and he became my friend. Ever since that, animals trusted me and now they are my friends. I named that deer Rock, because he was tough as a rock. The fact is, the deer you call Peace, Rock is his fathers’ father, but back to my story.

I have never been sick a day in my life, except for this one time. I think it has to do with you being my first contact with a person and eating the food you brought me. It’s all new exposure to elements that I have never had to contend with.

The more time I spend here, the more I gain knowledge and intuition. I seem to comprehend what’s all around me and its intentions. I knew that when Peace didn’t fear you and accepted you immediately that you had something very special.

My own inner voice, without hesitation, said I needed to reveal my presence and accept you as Peace had. Those thoughts were correct, because you are one of us. At this point in time I have no more answers for you. I too am in the dark about why I don’t seem to age or how I obtained the knowledge I have.

I can take you to the waterfall if you’d like to see the cavern where I awoke? It is also where I get fresh water to drink. I swim downstream from the falls and sometimes catch fish. Are there any questions you’d like to ask me now?" She asked.

You don’t know how old you are? Travis asked.

No, all I am aware of is the way I look at present. How long I’ve been like this is a mystery,

I’m the first person you have ever had contact with and spoke to? You said that you already knew how to speak English as well?

That’s the truth, as I said I can’t give you any other information. Maybe you can help me find the answer that I myself have been looking for, for years?

Okay Serenity, I will help you in any way that I can. Please show me the cavern where you woke up.

Serenity smiled and she led the way through the heavy underbrush. After an hour of hiking at a moderate pace they arrive at the waterfall.

Serenity said Follow me and I will show you the hidden pathway to the entrance to the cavern behind the falls.

There were rock cliffs and walls of stone that surrounded the falls. Serenity climbed slowly jumping from one boulder to another. The waterfall was approximately 175 feet high and after she had gone about 80 feet up, she stopped.

Follow me, she said, as she disappeared from sight. Travis had a challenge getting over the last two boulders to get where Serenity had vanished. Once he had, he saw a hole that went straight down some three or four feet. He jumped in and found himself standing in the middle of a tunnel.

He could hear the roar of the water; he made his way towards it through the tunnel until he saw Serenity standing in the middle of a large cavern. This is where I awoke those 12 winters ago’ she said.

Travis had to take a second look as he saw a full-sized Cougar (mountain lion, puma) sitting next to her side. Don’t be afraid of him. He’s as friendly as Peace and Little King.

Travis walked up to the big cat without any trepidation because he trusted her complicatedly. The cat leaped up putting its paws on both his shoulders and gave him a sloppy wet lick up and down the sides of his face.

Both Travis and Serenity burst out laughing as the big cat backed off and resumed sitting next to Serenity. Travis wiped the cat’s saliva from his face with his shirt sleeve. The animals purring could be heard over the waterfalls roaring sound.

Serenity showed Travis the exact place in the cavern where she awoke. He could see that this must be the cat’s den. There were old bones and nesting materials that were trademarks of a cougar’s den.

There were two tunnels that lead deeper into the mountain side besides the short one that led to the waterfall. Travis asked where do these tunnels lead to?

One leads to a bigger cavern than this one about a mile from here. The other to a room halve this size; but has a deep pond that takes up 85% of its size, about 400 yards from where we are standing, she said.

It’s getting late and I have to go home. I will bring two flashlights tomorrow so we can investigate the other rooms, Travis stated.

    Flashlight? Serenity said bewildered.

I’ll show and explain it to you tomorrow, he said.

The two departed the same way they had entered; but this time the big cat followed along with them.

After seeing Serenity back to her cave home, he continued on his way. The cougar walked by his side until they reached the tree line.

Travis looked at the big cat. I guess I’ll have to name you. I think King is perfect for you. Your bigger than Little King and you’re both cats. So, King it will be, he said.

He stepped out of the forest and made his way across the meadow once again. The cougar sat and eyed him until he reached the door of his house and disappeared.

The next morning Mary started her treatment and schooling with Travis. She had no explanation as to why or how he finished all the puzzles and equality dexterity test perfectly in record time. She noticed that his attitude was 180 degrees turnaround from want he usually had been displaying. She asked him how he felt and why he could now finish requirements asked of him so fast.
