Taking Care of Business
Be your own boss.
Understand all the details of any situation.
Stay focused on your goals and dreams.
Invent new ideas and ways to succeed.
Never place anyone’s opinion above your own.
Express yourself and expect success.
Spend the time to become an expert in your endeavors.
Stay away from negative thoughts, things, and people.
There are very few things to fear at this point in life.
A Dream
The dream is there, but you have to squint your eyes to see it,
Because in the beginning, it is so far away.
But as you work on your plan to achieve it, the distance will begin to close,
So you will be able to see it with your open eyes.
The funny thing is that everyone has dreams and desires, but people fail to act on them.
Therefore, dreams not acted upon are given back to the universe and float into the distance, out of your vision.
A Father’s Thank-You
I just want to thank you for the guidance you have given me throughout the years.
You are the best father and have shown me how to eliminate all my fears.
You have given me the road map for success, which will guide me to be my best.
You have taught me all you can, and I know with your wisdom, I will be a great man.
So thanks for all you have done.
I will always be thankful because you are my number one.
A father is the leader of the pack.
He is the protector, provider, and patriarch of the family.
He is the captain of the ship as it sails across the seas of time.
I am fortunate to have a father who is better than the rest.
And by the standards set for a father, you are.
A Slave’s Prayer
Shackles on my hands, shackles on my feet,
Bridle on my face with nothing to eat.
Unable to communicate, unable to talk,
Unable to stretch my limbs, unable to walk.
I could only observe my surroundings with my eyes.
My body was sore; my body was tired; I could only cry.
No brothers, no sisters, and taken away from my mother.
This cruel treatment—how could one human do this to another?
They had no regrets, no remorse, and no sorrow.
We were butchered, branded, and treated as animals.
It was quite obvious there was no place for morals.
From our treacherous journey from our homeland
To the sands of the Americas’ southern shores,
Chained side by side in the bottom of a ship with no toilet, limited food, no language, and no mate,
The six-month journey was one of stamina and the will to survive.
Though the destination was unknown, and the time to get there, the desire was still to arrive alive,
The desire to protect the female just a distant dream.
My present condition could not be explained; it was inhumane, I just wanted to scream.
With the smell and the sickness, not being able to catch a fresh breath,
In the dark halls of the ship, we were totally surrounded by death.
On the six-month journey of this trip, death was always within sight.
It was there in the morning, in the day, and at night.
The moaning of suffering a constant sound to the ear
As death took life after life, and everyone was consistently filled with fear.
Could this be a dream? I hoped it was a nightmare.
If this were real, truly real, then I had lost all hope in humankind.
Yes, it was real, truly real, and revealed the most horrendous horrors ever conceived in a person’s mind.
This human cargo consisted of children, men, and women.
There were not many rules to slavery capture other than to put in chains whoever was on hand.
Thousands and thousands on this six-month journey with human cargo.
All people from different tribes, different villages, not knowing where they were to go,
No communication, no discussion except for the eyes,
Stuck in the bottom of a ship day and night, unable to see the skies.
There was not any medicine for headaches, cuts, bruises, or any type of sickness.
What was available were beatings, rapes, murders, and the loss of family one would surely miss.
Can you imagine how these captives must have felt?
Daily masters’ beatings by someone’s belt.
A loss of plans, a loss of dreams and hopes,
Controlled by the brutality that was done but never spoke.
No bathroom to take care of nature’s call.
Being chained in one’s filth for six months just seemed to say it all.
There were no words to describe the degradation of the Atlantic slave trade.
The loss of life during the journey was in the tens of millions, with the ultimate price being paid.
The black race was bought and sold like animals based totally on the color of the skin.
The whole world
