About this ebook

This book is based on some of those experiences. Although I am not one of the main characters, it depicts the consequences of what lies, betrayal, and deception can cause. David thought he had it all but when he left his first love and moved to a different state to live his dream life, his life changed drastically.

He remarried someone whom he thought was going to make his life complete. A wealthy, young, and beautiful doctor like himself, only she was a wolf in sheep clothing. She was living a double life while David praises and protects her. His first wife went through the worst and because she came from a poor and abusive family, she treated her child the way her mother treated her. She believes that lying to the ones she loves would save them the pain, only, in the end, it caused more harm. Suicide was an option for some, while drugs and alcohol were also a way out for others.

Lies, betrayal, deception, these actions ruined the lives of these two families causing some to take their own lives. This thrilling book should teach us that being genuine and loyal to others will keep trust in any relationship. Also, drugs, alcohol nor suicide are the way to deal with the problems we face in life. Some of these can be an addiction, low-self-esteem, or even a sense of belonging. A simple talk with someone can help cure some of our everyday issues in life.

I have always dreamt of becoming a writer so that my words can reach out to someone and positively impact their lives. I am the author of my first book, “My Faith Saved Me”, a memoir I have published about three years ago which dealt with some of the struggles I have faced in this life and the only person who got me through it was God. Coming from the island of St Vincent and the Grenadines ten years ago, I was able to gain a bachelor’s degree in business and am currently pursuing my nursing degree. Life was not always easy for me, especially in relationships. I was lied to, cheated upon, and called the worst names ever and this caused me to have trust issues. Nevertheless, I am getting better at trusting people daily. This book is based on some of those experiences. Although I am not one of the main characters, it depicts the consequences of what lies, betrayal, and deception can cause. Preface

Every so often, many lives are being destroyed for many reasons. Two main reasons some marriages fail and some families are destroyed are secrets and lies. These two factors put couples at risk of having trust issues. From my own experiences, once I lose trust, it might be restored, but that relationship will never be the same. Another issue is addiction, which come in all shapes and forms.

I was inspired to write this book because my father drank too much, and it killed him. He was not present in my life, and I had to learn to live without him. The pain that caused affected me mentally.

My other reason for writing this is because I have experienced lots of cheating and lies and even emotional abuse in relationships, which caused me to not trust anyone that easily anymore.

The choices we make affect those around us and especially those we love. My advice to you is to be honest with yourself first and then with others. Do not be afraid to speak up about things that are bothering you especially if it is an addiction. Struggling with addiction and not seeking help can destroy your life.

I hope this book sheds some light on the subject of addictions and encourages you to always be honest and speak up about things that are affecting your life.

    Chapter 1

    DAVID AND REBECCA

David Paul Rose was born six pounds and eight ounces to rich parents, Henry David Rose and Barbara Tameka Rose, in Upstate New York. He grew up in a mansion with two siblings, Jaime and Janice Rose, twins.

He is the youngest child and the only boy in his family. They live in a ten-bedroom house with eight bathrooms, a pool, housemaids, and two dogs, and everyone drives a luxurious car.

By age nineteen, Henry owned a multimillion-dollar company with two branches in Europe. He and Barbara met when they were in high school and got married a year after they found out that Barbara was pregnant with the twins. David’s sisters are five years older than him, and after their first year in college, they dropped out and joined their father’s company.

At age ten, David was a very special kid. He was loving and very sympathetic. When his parents argued and he heard his mother cry, he believed it was his job to comfort her.

He attends Saint Mary’s Academy, which many rich kids attend. He doesn’t see himself as rich, just as a normal kid. Although he has maids at his house, a driver who takes him anywhere he wants to go, and parents who throw money at him all the time, he still lives a normal life.

One time at school, some popular rich girls are making fun of another girl, Rebecca Dorothy Smith. She has long hair and blue eyes, and she comes from a poor family. Becky, as her family sometimes calls her, is calm. They pick on her on and sometimes force her to do things she refuses to do. In addition to the constant bullying, some mean girls demand that Becky carry their bags to class every day. They are always mean to her and take advantage of her kindness. At lunch one day, David goes over to her table to ask if she is okay. He also asks her to join him at his table. They become inseparable from then on.

Rebecca does not have the privileges the rich kids at her school have. She walks to school, she wears secondhand clothes, and she is the third and last child in her family. Her mother, Elizabeth Smith, is a junkie and an alcoholic. Rebecca has two older sisters, Amber and Casey.

When her mother was around nine, her father started to molest her. This lasted for a few years until she decided to stab him. Luckily, he did not die. He also gave her to his friends for sex in exchange for money. She got pregnant with Amber at age twelve, Casey at age fourteen, and Rebecca at age fifteen. Things were tough on her because she had to drop out of school. This made her depressed, and she turned to alcohol, cocaine, and other drugs.

Rebecca never met her father because her mother does not know which of her father’s friends is Rebecca’s dad. Every time she asks about him, her mom either slaps her or curses her out.

The first time Child Protective Services visited their home, a neighbor reported Elizabeth to them. The girls were eight, ten, and eleven then. Elizabeth was using drugs and drinking while the kids were in her presence. Once she was all drugged up, she left them alone in the house. They covered for their mother and told the CPS woman that she had gone to the store.

This behavior has been going on for quite a while, and it has affected the girls. One morning, David catches Becky crying in the school hallway. He tries comforting her, but she pushes him away. The girls in her class humiliate her for the life she is living, and it is embarrassing for her to have a handsome, rich boy like David trying to help her. She has no friends at school and often goes without lunch. Because her mother is poor, she seldom takes a shower, and she wears torn clothes. Amber and Casey pay little or no attention to her; they left their mother’s home at age fifteen and went to live with their boyfriends.

Becky struggles from day to day trying to monitor her mother and focus on school. She sometimes wishes she could drop out and find a job so things could be better for them, but it is hard.

Scott Lacey, a senior in the middle school, walks into the cafeteria one day wearing some expensive shoes and carrying a laptop. As soon as he enters, he catches Becky’s attention. She thinks, What a handsome guy—tall, looks rich—but would he even talk to me?

He walks over to her table, sits down, and introduces himself. Hi. I’m Scott Lacey. Pleased to meet you.

She looks away, perplexed, hoping this is not a dream.

Why aren’t you looking at me? Are you blushing? You like me, don’t you?

She rolls her eyes and tries looking disturbed as he sits there with his hand stretched out waiting for her to shake hands with him.

Becky pauses for a moment. I’m Rebecca. Nice meeting you, Scott.

Scott is the son of the pastor for the Children in Christ Church in Lakeview City. His father, Pastor Andrew Lacey, is a well-respected man. He is also a physician and has been married to Scott’s mom, Mary Lacey, for thirty-five years. They have only one child, Scott. He flaunts his stuff at school—showing off his new shoes, watch, latest phone, and clothes.

Why are you talking to me? There are so many other girls in the room. Why me?

I like you. You’re beautiful. You’re trying hard to get, which I like, and you’re smart.

She hides her smile with her hands, plays with her hair, and turns her head to avoid having eye contact with him.

Can I see you after school? Maybe I can walk you home?

Who says I’m walking home? My mom will pick me up. Thanks anyway. She gets up and walks away.

Her lie makes her feel bad. She is living an embarrassing life, but two of the most popular guys in school have conversed with her in just an hour. She likes them both. Scott is a little rough while David is more of a gentleman. To get to and from school, she walks about two miles. After school is dismissed, she heads out.

David’s parents send him a driver to pick him up from school each day, and on their way home, he spots Becky. Herman, can you please pull over and give this girl a ride?

David, do you know this young lady? Herman asks. You cannot just stop and pick up strangers off the streets. That can be very dangerous.

Yes sir, but I know her. Her name is Rebecca, Becky, and she goes to my school. Please just stop and give her a ride.

The BMW pulls up alongside Becky, who continues walking because she does not know who it is and she worries about being kidnapped.

David opens his window. Hey, Becky! It’s me, David. Do you want a ride home? Where do you live?

She is ashamed of her home life, and since she has a crush on David, his seeing where she lives is the last thing she wants. Thanks, but it’s okay. I like the exercise, and I’m not far from home.

You sure? I don’t mind dropping you off.

You’re too kind, but yes, I’m sure. Maybe next time. Thanks, David.

She walks faster and cuts through a street toward her house. Her mother is on the porch waiting for her. She has already had five beers and is smoking. If there were another home Becky would go to, she would. Her focus must be on school and not taking care of her mother because she is just a kid. As she strolls up to her mom, Elizabeth looks at her child with disgust.

You little bitch! Where are you coming from at this hour? School got out a long time ago. Why are you now strolling up here, girl? Do you think you’re a grown woman? The only woman in this house is me.

She hits Becky’s leg with a bottle, and Becky falls.

You went whoring after school. Is that what it is? Let me tell you something, you little rat! She pulls Becky’s ear lifting her off the floor. You’ll not bring any bastard child into this house, you hear me?

Exhausted and hungry, Becky sits on the old wooden chair crying because she’s hurt. Because she is light skinned, the bottle left a mark on her leg.

Get up and clean the dishes, and when you’re through, go to the store for some beer and cigarettes. Stop the crying before I really give you something to cry about!

Becky gets up and hops to the bedroom to get out of her school uniform. The pain makes her walk a bit funny. Though her mother abuses her, Becky always obeys her. After washing the dishes and going to the store, she takes a shower and retires to her bed hungry and in pain and tears. No one is around to help take care of her, so she must do things on her own and endure the abuse her mother heaps on her daily. Her sisters never look back to see if she is okay, and she does not know where they are living.

The following day, she gets ready for school. She is sore from that hit her mother gave her with the beer bottle. She wants to skip school, but being out of the house is the best thing for her.

When she arrives at school, she tries hiding the wound so that no one can see. David walks up to
