The Trailer Park - Jade-Nichole Thurber

    Prologue

Clouds gathered as thunder rolled and lightning lit up the sky. Rain began to pour down heavily. Rod and Lexi ran right, while Lucy and Damien ran left. Another flash of lightning lit up the sky. Rod and Lexi disappeared. While running, Lucy tripped on wet leaves. She screamed; Damien reached out for her hand.

Lucy! Come on! RUN! He glanced back, realizing she was not longer with him. This brought him to a stop; anxiety and worry taking over. Damien spun around in circles looking through the rain. Lucy! he yelled.

Damien! Lucy screamed in response. He ran toward her voice. Lucy was hiding behind a tree. Her ankle was hurting. Suddenly a man appeared next to her.

    Lucy, you must run!

    I think I broke my ankle. I can’t run.

Yes you can, you have too! She stood up and started to run Damien! she screamed again. He spotted her and began to run toward her. Just as they were about to reach each other Damien was tackled to the ground. All he seen was a black blur from the corner of his eye. He had no time to dodge it and then he hit the soaking ground. A howl sounded in the distant. Suddenly Damien felt pain. Lucy started to scream and then he couldn’t see her anymore. Lucy took off running again; terrified and shaking, with pain shooting up her leg she ran as hard and as fast as she could. Stupidly she looked back. Damien was gone. Lexi and Rod were gone, and now there was a wolf chasing her. It had dark shaggy hair, eyes black as night, and sharp fangs, foaming at the mouth. Just as the beast was about to catch her, Lucy jumped.

The sound of an alarm clock was getting louder. Confused and fighting with her blanket, Lucy soon realized she was safe in her room, falling out of her bed. She also soon figured out that her ankle hurt because it was completely tangled in her blanket. Her Alarm clock was going crazy on her bedside table. She was going to be late for school.

    Chapter 1

Best friends Lucy, Lexi and Damien grew up together. Their mothers were best friends, until Lexi’s mother mysteriously died when the girls were 12 years old. Lucy’s father left when she was a baby. He went to work one night and never returned. But because their families were so tight, Malinda, Lucy’s mother, and Scott, Lexi’s father had all the support they could ask for. After Lexi’s mother died, Scott and Malinda became very close. Lexi and Lucy knew they were dating but continued to let their parents think they had no clue. Damien came from a large family; he was the second oldest of eight children. He was labeled the ‘freak’ of the family. His older brother Adrian was the popular guy, the jock. As children, Adrian loved picking on them, especially Damien because he was always with the girls. Since the day Lucy was born, Damien was drawn to her; very protective of her. Even Adrian felt a closeness, though he was increasingly drawn to Lexi.

When Damien was 15 years old, his family moved out of state because of his father’s work. Everyone was sad to see them leave. Damien was angry and-even though he would never admit it-heartbroken about the move. Adrian, Damien’s older brother, had just graduated high school, and was starting work for their father. He thought Damien handled the situation in a childish manor.

Two months after the move, Damien left in the middle of the night to go back home where he felt he belonged. He arrived early in the morning at Lucy’s house after hitch-hiking all night. He asked Malinda if he could stay with them. She, of course, called his parents, Simon and Cleo, to make sure they wouldn’t worry. When Malinda put Damien on the phone to speak with them, he begged them to allow him to say and finish school. Since being gone, his grades had dropped, and he seemed to be depressed. Malinda assured Simon and Cleo if they let him he stay he would finish school and as long as it was fine with them, he could stay as long as he wanted too. True to her word, Damien graduated high school and started working fulltime almost immediately.

As children, the three of them, Lucy, Lexi, and Damien looked awkward. Lucy was short in stature, long, dark, stringy hair and big blue eyes. She was skinny as a rail. But just before she started high school-the summer before-she changed dramatically-it seemed as if it happened over night. She got somewhat taller, and her body filled out. She got boobs, hips and her thighs got thicker. Suddenly she had curves and was thicker, instead of looking like a stick figure with a big head. Her auburn hair even looked thicker with body and bounce.

Lexi had been a chunky kid. Her hair was so curly she could barely get a brush through it, and her big brown eyes looked almost hidden from her chubby cheeks. Then suddenly, just like Lucy, Lexi shed her baby-fat, leaving her just slightly thick; she grew nearly four inches and most of the curls fell out of her hair, leaving only waves of dark brown hair. But her eyes became her favorite feature.

Damien had been as skinny as Lucy, and he was tall. His dark chocolate brown hair hung long and stringy-he dyed it a different color every two weeks, so very few people knew what his natural hair color was. By the time he graduated from high school, he was solid muscles. Damien lifted weights during his gym class and after school. He cut his hair to shoulder length and shaved it underneath. He also stopped painting his finger nails black and took out all his piercings, except his tongue ring. However in losing his piercings, he gained a few tattoos.

Malinda and Scott loved the three of them as if all three were their own children. Damien had become the son neither of them had the chance to have. They both spoke to Simon and Cleo on a daily basis. Damien’s parents had wanted him to come home, but he refused. He had a good job and even though he wouldn’t admit it to them, Damien stayed because of Lucy. His love for her had changed over the years.

Lexi and Lucy had jobs after school. Even though they were only supposed to work part time, because of child labor laws, they both worked more than the people they worked with. The girls had been saving up their money for more than a year and decided since it was their senior year and they were nearly 18, there was no reason in waiting to move out. After many conversations with Malinda and Scott they finally talked their parents into letting them get their own place. The conditions of this agreement were as followed:

    1.  Damien MUST live with them (like that wasn’t a given)

    2.  They had to stay in school

    3.  They MUST maintain their grades

    4.  They had to graduate

Malinda also took the girls to be put on birth control as a precaution. Scott took Damien to the store and bought every kind of condom that was on the shelf.

We don’t want any accidents. These are for the girls too. Scott’s face was scarlet as he mentioned the girls, I like to think they aren’t having sex, but I’m not stupid. He told Damien as he paid the cashier.

Um…ok. This whole situation was very uncomfortable for him, even if he was 21 years old. I don’t really talk to them about their…um…personal lives. As far as I know, they aren’t having sex. Damien was looked everywhere but at Scott.

Across town at the doctor’s office, the conversation was a little more hostile.

Mom! This really is not necessary! I’m not having sex with anyone! I don’t even have a boyfriend!

Yeah, Malinda, Lucy’s still a virgin. Trust me I would be the first to know otherwise.

And what about you? Malinda asked Lexi. The waiting room was nearly empty. The room was dimly lit, with a TV mounted to the wall set on a health channel.

I do have a boyfriend, but we aren’t doing anything. Lexi looked down at her feet as she sat up more in her chair.

Well this is just a precaution. We don’t want any accidents. You have your whole lives a head of you and I know this new freedom may make you go a little wild. Malinda was trying to be the ‘cool mom’.

Mom, really? When do we have time to go wild? All we do is study, and work when we’re not at school. Damien has far more free time than we do.

I know that, and Scott is at the store with him now buying condoms. Lucy and Lexi sat staring at Malinda; their mouths hanging open and eyes wide like they had just seen something completely unbelievable.

Wow! I know that’s going over great. Poor Damien. Lexi commented.

After the girls have been probed and their prescriptions taken to the pharmacy they went home. Neither of them too please. Damien seemed to be as traumatized by his outing with Scott as the girls were with their visit to the gynecologist.

Later that evening they met up with Lexi’s boyfriend Rod to go house hunt. Lucy and Damien agreed to let Rod move in with them. They just weren’t telling Malinda and Scott. Rod really wasn’t a favorite person of theirs; Lexi was really the only person that liked him, and on their best day it was questionable. But four incomes were better than three, even though Rod’s line of work was a bit unpredictable. He made a living selling drugs. He had dropped out of school his junior year deciding he could make more money selling drug, than actually working a ‘normal job’.

The house hunting was going nowhere fast. They spent every day they weren’t at work after school looking for a place. Most of the time Rod picked the girls up from school. If Damien was off work in time he went with them. If he couldn’t make it, he trusted Lexi and Lucy’s judgment; so it they didn’t like something he knew it was probably crap.

Where is Rod? Lucy asked Lexi while they were standing outside, in front of the school. It was cold; they were bundled up with their backpacks sitting at their feet.

I don’t know. I already texted him, told him we are waiting for him. He should be here anytime. Lexi replied, pulling her coat closer to her.

He needs to hurry up! I need a freakin’ cigarette!

I know right! I don’t know how any school officials can classify a school a ‘smoke and drug free’ zone, because you either have to smoke or do drugs to deal with this place!

Speaking of drugs, I bet Rod had to make a run.

    You’re probably right.

The girls waited about 10 minutes more before Rod finally got there. Surprisingly Damien was with him. Rod had stopped to pick him up on his way to pick up the girls. When the girls climbed into Rod’s SUV, Damien had a cigarette lit for Lucy.

Holy crap! Thank you! Lucy took the cigarette, taking a puff she said, You know me so well. I love you! Damien smiled and shrugged his shoulders like it was nothing.

Yes, I try and you’re welcome. He then pulled a Red bull energy drink from his backpack. I thought you might want one these too. Holding the drink out to her.

Aww, Damien, you are so thoughtful. Lexi commented, sitting in the front passenger seat. What the hell Rod!? Why can’t you do sweet stuff like that for me? They aren’t even together and Damien does the sweetest things for Lucy and what do I get form you? Nothing! she started smacking at his shoulder.

Oh shut it Lexi! Why don’t you look in the bag at your feet? And besides, Damien only does those things for Lucy because he’s want to get into her panties. With that statement, Lucy sprayed Rod’s backseat with Red bull, while Lexi looked in the bag at her feet. In it she found a pack of cigarettes and her favorite Monster energy drink.

I’m sure I get a say as far as who gets into my panties. And I would prefer if my panties are not a topic of conversation that comes out of your mouth.

Thank you Rod. Lexi said giving him a kiss on the cheek.

Besides Rod, the only reason you thought about doing something nice for Lexi was because Damien done that for me, and you didn’t want to look bad and hear her lip. Lucy said grinning. Rod rolled his eyes mumbling something under his breath.

    Lucy, give it a rest.

Yeah, ’cause listening to y’all is totally making me look forward to all the of us living together. Damien laughed.

They hit the back roads, searching for about an hour when they stumbled upon a small trailer park in the middle of nowhere. Driving through the place, looking around, it was not a very inviting place to behold. Most of the trailers looked old and not well kept. There were a few that was noticeably newer then the rest. It was quiet…almost deserted. Rod stopped the vehicle in front of a newer trailer that looked to be empty.

I like this one. Lexi said pointing to the trailer they were stopped in front of.

That’s good, being that it seems to be the only decent empty one in the whole park. Looks like that might be our only possibility. Rod replied, getting out of the car. The other three filed suit. Damien and Lucy walked one way around the trailer, while Rod and Lexi went the other direction.

Damien and Lucy were walking around the front, looking in the windows when a voice behind them startled Lucy.

You want to go inside? The voice asked. Lucy jumped out of Damien’s arms; he was holding her up so she could see inside.

Holy crap! Lucy screamed, turning around to face a young man about their ages.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. The man smiled at Lucy.

Who owns this place? Or who do we need to talk to about this trailer? Damien asked.

The owners are my parents, but they’re health is not that great so I oversee everything. My name is Greg. He held out his hand to them; they both shook his hand, but Damien didn’t miss Greg holding on the Lucy a little too long.

This place is huge! Lexi exclaimed, We want to go inside! as she rounded the corner; Rod followed behind her looking less than impressed.

Awesome! Greg replied. Hi, I’m Greg. I oversee everything here. He held his hand out again to them. They too shook his hand, again, he lingered a little too long with Lexi.

Um-hmm. Rod mumbled. Lexi elbowed him in his side.

I’m Lexi and this is my boyfriend Rod. Lexi told Greg as he pulled a ring of keys from the pocket of his pants, and began flipping through to find the key to the front door.

Here we are. He said walking to the door. When it was unlocked he pushed the door open and stepped out of the way. There you go, take your time.

The four walked in and looked around. Greg went in behind them and stood in the living room. Rod and Lexi went left through the living room and the kitchen. There were two bedrooms and a bathroom up the hall pasted the kitchen. The master bedroom was a nice size, with an entrance to the bathroom. The other room wasn’t much bigger than a closet and the closet was like a hole in the wall. The kitchen was in fairly good condition with what looked like gently used appliances and plenty of room for a table and chairs. The floor was the fake hardwood that looked like the real deal. The living room was a spacious area with practically brand new carpet. Damien and Lucy went to the right down the hall. There they found two more bedrooms joined by a bathroom. The rooms on that end were bigger than the smaller one on the other end but there were no closets in either of the other rooms.

Once the four were finished looking around they met back up in the living room where Greg was sitting on an old green couch that had been left behind by the previous occupants.

I love this place! Lucy exclaimed, It’s just big enough.

I don’t know. I mean the bathrooms are small. And who gets the master bedroom? Rod complained.

Damn it Rod! This ain’t the Hollywood hills! And we ain’t looking for a 10 bedroom mansion! Jeez, you make everything so complicating…ugh! Lucy crossed her arms as she rolled her eyes at him.

Yeah, if you don’t like it, you don’t have to live with us. Damien agreed.

Please excuse him. He doesn’t understand that not everyone lives in luxury and we common folk gotta start at the bottom. Lucy told Greg, who smiled and laughed at her comment.

As far as looks went, Greg was the type of guy you take home to meet your parents, classic boy next door; His hair, dark blonde in color, was short, clean-cut. He was clean shaved with a baby face. His eyes would put Johnny Depp to shame. Greg’s clothes, khaki pants, a plaid button down shirt, black boots, and a car hart coat, were perfect-Lucy wondered if he had them dry cleaned and pressed- the creases were in all the right places, no wrinkles. Lucy and Lexi were staring at him with goofy
