    PROLOGUE

Once upon a time, there were only three canaries left in the whole entire world: two males and one female. The male birds would sing for the female bird’s undivided attention.

She chose one as her lover. He would sing to her merry, chirpy, happy songs because he knew that she was committed to him.

The other male would sing his heart out with songs of endearment every day from sunrise to sunset. He would sing his heart out for her, but she would pay him no attention.

The more he sang, the more beautiful his songs became. Still, she would not even look his way.

One day he hit a note that was so beautiful. He didn’t want to let it go, with the exception of the female bird. Every creature on earth, including her lover, turned and looked at him. She did not turn, and he did not stop. He blew out his last breath and fell to the ground and died.

The earth became silent. There was and still is a great emptiness and void in the atmosphere. Everyone missed and wanted to hear the beautiful songs of this bird again, but those songs of endearment and his beautiful voice was now gone forever.

No one missed his songs more than the female bird. Every day for the rest of her life, she would look over the cherry tree where he used to sit and sang all day for her.

She yearned to hear the infinite beauty of his songs, enwrapped and delivered with his loving, passionate, sweet, caring voice. If only just one more time. But he was now gone forever.

    THREE DAYS TO LIVE

CLIVE THE ROOSTER HAD A look in his eyes as if he had just seen his own ghost. He was scared out of his feathers after overhearing, while passing by the kitchen window, as the cooks were preparing dinner, that he would be one of the four roosters that they would be killing and preparing for dinner at the barbeque this Sunday.

It is the custom of most farmers to catch the chickens and roosters a few days before killing them and feed them with extra food in order for them to put on more weight and extra flesh for eating. They are usually killed, prepared, and marinated at least from the night before. All the seasonings—thyme, scallion, bell peppers, hot peppers, scotch bonnet peppers, onions, garlic, pimento seeds just to name a few—were being blended together when Clive heard the bad news and looked through kitchen the window.

What do you do when you hear that you only have three days to live?

You would love Clive. Clive is a very healthy homegrown organically-fed rooster that just turned three years old. If a rooster makes it to his fourth birthday. He is basically home and dry and is left to couple and breed as many hens as possible. The flesh of organically-grown chickens over four years old, especially roosters, are usually so tough, rubbery, and extremely hard to chew even after hours of cooking.

Clive decided to make a very early retreat to his roost that afternoon without anyone noticing. He went all the way to the pinnacle of the tree, the very last branch of the ackee tree that he sleeps at nighttime, and hid himself.

It was on a Thursday late afternoon that Clive overheard the cooks in the kitchen, reminding one another that for this Sunday’s dinner, they would be killing four big roosters, including the rooster with red, white, and blue feathers on his chest and walked very cocky and confident than all the other roosters on the farm. Clive also knows that his swag, cockiness, and self-confidence is second to none. Clive, usually with relative ease, beat up on most roosters on the farm with the exception of one. So he knew the roosters had a lot of envy and jealousy for him, but he had no idea that the cooks had it for him too.

Clive decided to stay in the tree instead of coming down the next morning. He quickly identified the other roosters that would be barbecued, fried, and baked for dinner this Sunday. They were getting extra food in order for them to put on weight before Sunday, and they were just gobbling up the bait.

Clive wanted to say something but could not afford to blow his cover. After the farm workers finished feeding the chickens and cleaning the coops and went to lunch, Clive came down just for a few minutes to get something to eat then went back up in the tree and planned his next move.

Clive began to reason with himself. What is it that I want to do with my life before I die? And I only have two days to do it.

Other than wanting to be with the chick next door, what else do I have to do before I die?

I always wanted to travel the world. The first place I want to visit is Portland, Oregon. I would like to sit at the top of those huge timbers and look out in the big open state and see the wonders of the big country.

Later that same evening the scent of fried chicken and the aroma of chicken soup were coming through the kitchen window and going through the air. Clive’s lungs were now filled with fear from chicken soup flavors. While the Brown family sat down to enjoy their evening meal together, Clive shivered at the thought that he could be next.

Now that Clive decided that he wants to visit Portland, Oregon. He started making his way out of the farm around four thirty in the morning.

He thought about all that he would left behind, including his favorite chick Amoy. But he knew now is the time to fly this coop for good. When humans want their chicken, they want their chicken.

Clive headed north to cooler pastures using his flight-and-flight instincts and his ability to listen for danger. Day by day, he made progress toward his destination.

He took time out to enjoy the sceneries and the beauty of nature as he traveled from state to state. Before you know it, he was sitting on a big oak tree from the mountain overlooking the cleanest city in the world: Portland, Oregon.

This place reminds me of home, Clive said to himself. The only major difference, it is at least a thousand times bigger but just as clean. Clive was extremely impressed by the collective effort of all individuals in the city to keep it so clean.

Way in the distance, Clive heard the crowing of roosters and decided to head in the direction of the crowing roosters. At the foothills of the Hood Mountain, Clive came across the biggest organically-bred chicken farm he had ever seen. He could not believe his eyes.

The roosters here are friendly. Clive was pleasantly surprised that he was greeted with such warmth and acceptance. The roosters here are well-mannered and treated their chicks with respect and dignity.

A rooster by the name of David introduced himself to Clive and invited him to a seminar for roosters, which Clive readily accepted. At the seminar, David so happened to be the main speaker for the evening. Right away, Clive realized that he was in good hands or should I say good wings.

David is a very well-versed and enthusiastic speaker and an expert in delivering thought-provoking messages that will hold your attention. Clive was listening very carefully to every word uttered by David. And he knew that this was a life-changing moment.

Clive was invited to many seminars and business meetings before but always finds an excuse not to go. But because of his new environment and the pleasant nature of everyone and his need for meeting new friends, he had no choice but to go.
