Kanak Vanam

KANAK VANAM Kanak Vanam is a ten-year-old girl, who has a passion for reading and writing. Ever since she could remember, she has loved to write. From heartfelt poetry to adventure stories, Kanak Vanam has written numerous tales. She loves to write and has a knack for bringing feelings into her stories, as well as being dramatic. Unlike her co-author, Ann Peng, she is more about feeling and being dramatic rather than being humorous. Her favorite color is red, her favorite food is Biryani, and her favorite thing to do is read. She lives in California, Redwood City with her younger sister, older brother, mom, and dad. ANN PENG Ann Peng is a ten-year-old girl who also has a passion for writing, but unlike her friend and co-author, Kanak Vanam, she does not write poems, rather writing fictional stories. She has a knack for putting some humor into a story and describing people and their looks, not being heartfelt and soft and cheesy and-ok, let’s stop there. Her favorite color is green, her favorite food is noodles, and her favorite thing to do is talk. She lives in the Bay Area in California with her younger brother, older sister, mom, and dad.

    PROLOGUE: PART ONE

    Azzy: Seventeen years ago

She could hear their bickering from across the hall.

She’s too young, she might die! said her father.

Well, the younger the better. Longer for her to adapt. And besides, it’s a gift! argued her mother.

A horrible one! And she may injure herself!

    It might save her life.

    I doubt it.

Think what you want, but I’m doing it. said her mom.

She pushed open Azzy’s door and leaned over her crib.

Don’t worry, Azarath. It will be alright. You’re just getting your powers. Isn’t that fun? she said. Then she placed a hand over Azzy’s forehead. The last thing she heard was, It will be alright…

    Then came the pain.

It felt like she was on fire. Azzy opened her eyes. She was on fire. But it was dark. Very dark. All she could see was darkness. But she could feel the fire. And then… coolness swept over. Like standing in the shadow of a tree on a hot summer’s day.

Azzy was the shadow, yet she was also the scorching sun. It made her feel…she couldn’t describe it, but it felt anything but bad.

    She closed her eyes.

After a while, Azzy opened her eyes. She laughed. And as she laughed, a flame burst alive in her right palm. As she laughed, a ball of shadows formed in her left palm. Azzy looked at them and started playing with them.

See? I told you. She heard her mother say. Her father grumbled.

Still, I don’t think fire is safe.

Oh, for goodness sake, she’s fireproof! her mother said.

    Her father grumbled again.

Azzy didn’t care. She had just gotten her powers, and she liked it.

    PROLOGUE: PART TWO

    Ivy: Fourteen years ago

It’s really time we decided on her powers, said Dark Ivy, to her husband, Riptide.

I know, but if we can’t decide who’s powers she gets, then what’s the point of giving her any at all?

But she needs them! She has to be like the Ivy Clan. argued her mom.

And the Ivy Clan used which power?

"Plants. Obviously. It’s in the name! Ivy Clan!"

Oh, great! Just use the Ivy Clan as an excuse to give her plant powers! What about mine? argued Riptide.

She doesn’t need your stupid water powers! What would she do with them? Talk to some fish? shouted Dark Ivy.

No. She would direct the current of the seas, make water purified, and yes, talk to fish. Riptide huffed.

What good would that do? With my power, she can make plants, turn into a plant, and control plants! Dark Ivy screeched.

How about this? We call Ivy in and aim our powers at her at the same time. Whoever’s power beam reaches her first, she will have that person’s powers. It’s fair. No cheating. suggested Riptide.

Dark Ivy considered that. She stuck out her hand and said, Deal. No cheating. Then she called, Ivy! Time to come in! Four-year-old Ivy came running in.

Honey, we’re going to aim a few power beams at you, and whichever reaches you first will be your new power! Dark Ivy said as if that happened to kids all the time.

Um… ok, said Ivy, sounding scared.

    One, two, three! counted Riptide.

They both blasted a power beam at Ivy, but instead of one of them hitting her before the other, both hit her… at the same time?

    AHHHHHH! Ivy screamed, then fainted.

    BOTH?! shrieked her parents.

That was the day Ivy got her powers.

    Azzy

Azzy backed up. She drew her sword and looked around the ominous woods.

Who’s there? she yelled. Just her and a bunch of fog. She thought she had just heard something rustling. Then she heard a stick crack behind her. She turned around to face a giant plant and an enormous wave.

Whaa.. was all Azzy could manage. She shook her head and snapped, and a bow and arrow made out of flames appeared in her hands. She knocked the arrow, then shot.

    Ivy

Ivy aimed her most venomous plants with her left hand, and with her right hand, she made a big wave of water, tainted with the poison of the
