ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I offer my sincere gratitude, praise and thanksgiving to our Almighty God, the Father of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for sustaining me with strength and good health for his unconditional love, mercy, and grace throughout my life.
This journey will not be complete without the support of my family. I would like to acknowledge my daughters, Jayem and Catherine, my son-in-law, Will, for your wholehearted support, and to my grandchildren, Jillian, Kayleigh and Mason, for your love and respect, but most of all, for always making me feel like a million dollar grandma. To Jayem, for your wisdom and talent to craft the theme of the whole manuscript and for suggesting that the word of God be the focal point of Inay’s journey in every chapter of her life. To Catherine, for the anointing and the gift that God has given you, for influencing others and for being a mentor to many, including me at times, you humbly bring the very best out in me.
To my sister Merly, and my youngest brother Junior, thank you for taking care of Inay especially during her last days, for collecting all the information from each member of our family, for the many stories that I missed and for helping me recall our childhood days with Inay and Tatay – thank you for helping me put these memories together. To my brother, Conrado, thank you for being our oldest brother now that Kuya Delfin is gone, for your consistent visits to Inay with Ate Penny, Cherry and the kids. To my nephews Paul and Mico, thank you for taking care of Inay while she was in Manila, for collecting and verifying the information from your cousins, for your support and for your love and care for your mom. To my nieces, Lovely, Shyrine and Jasmine, you were with Inay until her last breath – thank you for taking care of her.
To my uncle, Celso Pentinio – you are the only living legacy who holds the eyewitness true accounts of Inay’s life, thank you for your vivid memory and for the detailed account of what transpired between you and Inay growing up. To my cousin, Chona Pentinio Beraquit, thank you for your diligence and patience in recording all the information, for the long texts and emails, and for the kind and warm person you are, thank you for being my cousin. To my cousin, Anabel Pentinio who clarified the information about her father, my uncle Galo and his family, thank you. The stories of Inay’s brothers were complete because of your help.
To my friend, Danilo M. Perez, a sincere thanks and gratitude. Your kind heart, generosity and willingness to help others were extended to my family especially to Inay. Thank you for helping me connect with the people I needed to reach to complete her story.
To a loving friend and my great supporter, Gloria (Yette) Eramo, from Ontario, Canada, thank you. You initially brought up the idea of writing her story after a long conversation about the close ties of our families, about our high school classmates and friends, that we did not realize were our relatives. As the intricacies of family relationships were revealed, you suggested to document those events, so they are not forgotten. This journey would not had come to fruition had it not been for you.
To my relatives from Banalo, Manuel and Erlinda Carrido Godoy, Ester Mercado and Nenet Albania, thank you for gathering the information about the childhood days of Inay and her siblings, and filling in the gap of what I knew and heard from Inay as she told me her story. The memories of my grandparents completed the whole cycle of life of Inay. To Ate Linda, special thanks for your diligence and patience in sending the information to me.
To my relatives from Fabrica, Carolina Godoy de Torres, oldest daughter of Auntie Feliciana, for sharing her mother with Inay and for her recollection of their childhood. To her daughter, Cynthia De Torres Anyayahan, thank you for transmitting the information to me. To my auntie, Aurora Cay Atienza, thank you for sharing memories of Tatay and his other brothers and sisters.
My sincere thanks and appreciation to my relatives from California; Aida Diezmos Cay of Burbank, who led me back to the generation of my grandparents from both sides - the Pentinios and the Cays; Enriqueta (Etay) Claveria of Carson, and Tessie Zaraspe Marcelo of Hayward, who shared with me their recollection of my grandmother from the Aclan side; Hermie Morales Cay of San Diego, for her recollection of my father’s siblings.
To my classmate from St. Bridget’s College and dear friend, Melita Pureza Magbanua from Chicago, Illinois for your artistic talent and technical knowledge, thank you for your help.
To my sister in Christ and author of best-selling cookbooks, Mrs. Lori Watkins from Millbrae, California, thank you for your encouragement to pursue my dream of writing a book, for your consistent follow up every time we saw each other at church, for your tips
