About this ebook

I have a hunch that a book on women’s place in the church and in society at large when just a little over a year ago, women in Britain celebrated a hundred years of winning the right to vote, will create raised eyebrows. It is interesting to note that the world is still trying to find answers to the question of why we still have disparity between the pay of men and women, and people still question the ability of women in leadership roles.
I try to establish in this book that even today, there are many traditions across the world that want to look down on women and to portray them as second-class humans. Sadly, there are some in the church family who believe likewise and are struggling to accept women as church leaders. If Jesus Christ is the head of the church, why don’t we think about what he says when it comes to formulating doctrines for our churches.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have supported me through thick and thin of my ministry to this point, enabling me to write my first book.

My sincere thanks go to my lovely wife, Lawrencia, my children—George, Bernard, Andy, and Angela—and my grandchildren for their support over the years and the sacrifices they had to make because of my involvement in ministry.

My thanks also go to Rev. Michael Whittle of Good News Gospel Church, Ashton Under-Lyne. United Kingdom, a colleague who has supported me from my Bible college days in 1990 up to date.

I also take this opportunity to thank my mentor, the late Bishop Bob Hawkson, and The Jubilee International Churches and Ministries, Accra, Ghana, West Africa, where I first got my ministerial training and from where I was first ordained as a minister of religion in 1983. I also owe a load gratitude to the late Mr. George Kwasi Menu Aboagye, who nurtured me with Christian upbringing of the Presbyterian background. And last but not the least, my biological parents, Nana Odikro Kwabena Boakye and Mama Dede Mamode, all of blessed memory.

    Preface

On what do we base our arguments that women should not be leaders of a church? Most people base their arguments on a single statement made by the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 14:34.

It was this same apostle Paul who said in Galatians 3:27, 28 (NIV), For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

With this in mind, I am going to try, with the help of the Holy Spirit and supported by scriptures, to throw some light on the fact that in the eyes of God, men and women are equal and, therefore, have the same rights and responsibilities to lead God’s people if God so wishes.
