()
About this ebook
that nursery rhyme. I’m sure you do. But was it really Jack
who fell down that hill first? What about this girl named Jill?
How does she fit into all of this? Well, I’m here to tell you the
real story about these two. Jill is always getting into some kind
of a predicament that often turns into a real adventure, and
everyone loves reading about a good adventure. I think you’ll
enjoy seeing how Jill gets herself into these messes, and how
her friend Jack helps her get out of them. Oh, and by the way,
is it Jack and Jill, or Jill and Jack?

Jack Meets Jill
Jack and Jill
Went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down
And broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after
Jack and Jill did become friends with each other, but maybe… Jack wasn’t the one who fell. Now, let me tell you the real story about Jack and Jill.
It was the fourth day of September, and it was the second day of the new school year. The weather was starting to cool already, which was earlier than usual. The Jacksons liked the snow, but just not so early. They lived in Wisconsin, in a little town named Brookside, which was a short distance north of Green Bay. The Jacksons had only one son whose name was Jack. He had just started fifth grade.
After school, when Jack was on his way home with one of his friends, Ronny, he noticed a large moving truck just two houses down from his. Hey, Ronny! Look at that big moving truck! That wasn’t there this morning. The house that those people are moving into has been empty for more than two years!
cried Jack.
Yeah, some kids say it’s haunted,
laughed Ronny.
Look!
exclaimed Jack, My mom’s over there talking to a lady.
Jack and Ronny ran over to where all the action was. Hi, Mom! Who’s moving in here?
The Clarkson family is moving in today,
replied his mother. They have two girls. One is your age, and her name is Jill. Jill has an older sister, who is fifteen, and her name is Lesley. Jack, this is Mrs. Clarkson, our new neighbor.
Nice to meet you, Mrs. Clarkson.
Jack then turned to his mother and asked, When will you be home, Mom? I’m hungry!
"I’ll be home shortly. You can have a snack, but don’t eat too much."
Okay, Mom.
Jack turned to his friend. See you at school tomorrow, Ronny.
With his stomach growling, he turned to leave.
Wait, Jack!
cried his mother. Here comes Jill now. I want you two to meet each other.
Jill had just come out onto her front porch. Jill, come here. I want you to meet my son, Jack.
She came down the stairs and walked over to them. Hi!
she said.
Hi! I’m Jack, and we live two houses down that way. Our school is just two blocks from here.
I know. I saw it earlier today. It so looks old,
replied Jill.
You’re right about our school being old, Jill, but they try to keep it looking nice. I think it’s over a hundred years old,
Jack laughed.
No, Jack, but you’re pretty close,
his mother added. Jill, it’s ninety-one years old, and they do keep it in excellent repair. I think you’ll like going there.
Our school just started yesterday, so you’ve only missed two days. It was nice to meet you, Jill, but I’ve got to get home now,
he told her. He couldn’t wait to have that snack.
Jill waved goodbye and then disappeared into her house.
Watching Jack head back home, Mrs. Jackson turned to her new neighbor and remarked, Mrs. Clarkson, I also must be getting home now. If I can be of any further help, I’ll be here for you. I’m so glad we will be neighbors!
With a smile, she continued, We’ll also be looking forward to meeting your husband later.
I’m sure we are going to love living here with such great neighbors. Thank you so much for all of your wonderful help, Mrs. Jackson!
Chapter Two
Jill’s Accident
It was finally Monday, and Jill woke up feeling happy and excited. She was looking forward to her first day of school. She headed for the bathroom, but her big sister was already in there. Jill could hear her singing with her hairdryer going. Lesley, hurry up! I need to get in there too!
Jill yelled.
The door opened, and her sister said, It’s all yours, Jill. Today is going to be a great day! Last Saturday, I met the perfect boy. He was mowing the grass at the high school. His name is Billie, and he’s so cute! He’s a senior this year.
Jill finished getting ready for her first day at her new school and ran downstairs for breakfast.
Jill, you need to hurry, honey. The school bell will be ringing in about twenty minutes,
cried her mother.
Jill finished and hurried out the front door. Jack was almost ready to leave his house, as well. He happened to look out his front window just as Jill was passing. Jack ran out, calling, Jill, wait! I’ll walk you to school.
During the night, it had snowed just a little, and the temperature had dropped down below freezing. The sidewalks were very slippery, and for the early part of September, this was very unusual.
Jill, can I hold on to you?
asked Jack. It’s really icy.
No, I’m fine,
she replied. Just then, she slipped and fell on her left arm. Ouch, that hurt!
Tears started running down her face.
Let me help you up, Jill. I’ll get you back to your mom!
exclaimed Jack.
Jack, I think I may have broken my arm!
She held on to Jack, as he helped her get home.
Jill was in tears as Jack helped her up the stairs to her front door. Just as they were about to enter, her mother opened the door.
My goodness, Jill, what happened?
her mother exclaimed.
I fell on the icy sidewalk, and Jack was so nice to help me get back home.
She then turned to Jack and gave him a big hug. Thank you so, so much! I know we’re going to be good friends, Jack.
She turned into her mother’s waiting arms and started crying.
Thank you, Jack. You go on to school. I’m so sorry that you’re going to be late now, but I’m sure your teacher will understand after you explain what happened.
After stopping back at his house to tell his mother what had happened to Jill, he was off to school. He smiled a little, thinking about the hug Jill gave him. He liked her the first time he saw her. He thought to himself, She’s a cool girl.
Chapter Three
Jack Worries About Jill
When Jack finally got to school, he explained to his teacher what had happened to poor Jill on the way to school on her first day. He began to wonder if Jill had broken her arm. He hoped that she hadn’t.
The school day finally ended, and Jack headed straight for Jill’s house. He knocked on her door, and to his surprise, Jill answered the door.
Hi, Jack! How was school?
Fine, but how are you?
Better! My arm wasn’t broken after all.
He noticed the wrap covering her left wrist.
The doctor said it was just a badly sprained wrist. He put this wrap on my wrist to stabilize it. That way, he said it would heal much quicker.
Oh, I’m so glad your arm is okay. How long do you have to have that wrap on, Jill?
Maybe a few weeks, but the doctor said it could be less. I sure hope it’s less,
she said with a sigh.
I see it’s your left wrist. I sure hope you’re not left-handed, Jill,
he laughed.
No, I’m right-handed, thank goodness. I’ll be going to school tomorrow. Could you walk me to school, Jack?
Yes, that would be fine. The weather is worse than usual for this early in September. I’ll see you in the morning. I’m glad you’re okay!
Jack returned home, relieved that Jill was not too badly hurt. His mother asked him when he came in, "Jack, why are you late getting home? Is
