Preface
Poetry is personal, usually. What I write about is, I suppose, the same as what and why an artist paints or a musician composes. This book’s 118 poems are indexed into 16 categories of diverse subjects. Each is based on one or more of the five human senses that puts life into in life, and on the whisperings of God’s Spirit. Poeming Life is simply that.
Poeming Life
The enjoyment of writing poetry
adds to the joy of living
Poeming through life’s
Dismays and delights
Gives a prospective
In setting objectives.
I’m prone to reflect
Occasionally inspect
Things and friends
On memories spend.
For when I do
Peace ebbs through
In verses well-chosen
As inspiration flows-in.
Poeming is cathartic
Like paintings to artists
On maxims I meditate
Then write to animate.
And the purpose?
Mentation in surplus?
Nay, likely for progeny
As a humble legacy.
Done well? Hopefully
For I am pleased
If prose and lays
Are liked or praised.
Addiction
Cloak of Deception
During the time I served as a facilitator in an
addiction recovery program, I wrote many
poems about addiction, this being one
about a man attending his first group meeting
With apprehension he approached the door
As he’d done elsewhere a few weeks before
Jim had chosen a life troubled and binding
Now he strove to be free from the hiding.
He wore a cloak of denial and pretension
And deceived others ways he’ll not mention
His clutching addiction gripping and strong
Weary, he longed for redemption’s song.
He came in his long-worn cloak of deception
An ecclesiastical leader to take his confession
Outside the office there was a coat rack
Where upon he hung his cloak of black.
He told of his life’s story full and complete
No more lying, his confession was replete
He sought to repent, his agency to mend
And counseled to recovery meetings attend.
He now came to the meeting’s door and paused
Raising courage to join others in the same cause
He saw the same coat rack where cloaks hung
And put his by the others on an empty rung.
Jim stepped inside and was warmly greeted
He chose a space in the circle and there seated
This and to future meetings he would come
Learning recovery from addictions he shunned.
He was as sick as his secrets he came to know
Whenever he hid them his recovery was slow
In a safe place he unmasked his commissions
With a spiritual awakening he offered contrition.
Today Jim is frank and open with his description
Of sin he once was a captive to in his condition
Ever guarded that he not yield to temptations
And in meekness he hopes for a higher station.
He is The Lifeline
Matt. 14:29-31; written in consideration and
hope for the struggling addict
Afraid and beginning to sink
He cried out, Lord save me!
From his addiction he would shrink
To burst his cords and be free.
Singing Throw Out the Lifeline
Warns someone is drifting away
Throw Out the Lifeline
A poor soul is sinking today.
Come to the end of your rope?
Discouraged by fading faith?
Lost with no escape or hope?
Yielded to an evil wraith?
Cry out. The Lifeline is there
Onto his stretched hand hold
That ye not sink or despair
His saving grace redeems your soul.
Christ our Savior is ever near
He is our lifeline, his hand reaches
E’er to rescue, your cry he hears
When a heart in peril beseeches.
The water may represent mortality
