Prologue
Have you ever been in love? I mean, really been in love, to the point you thought that life as you knew it was over if you could not have him? The kind of love where you give all the rights to your heart, your mind, your soul, and, yes, your pride? You’d give it all up just to be loved by him? Sometimes we as women give it all up in the name of love. It is not until we truly and fully understand love that we can somewhat control it, if such a thing is possible. Finding love should be easy, but choosing love with a younger man requires you to be a special type of woman. It is my conclusion that it takes a strong-willed woman, one with very thick skin and a lot of patience. It was a wonderful and most challenging relationship, which brought many tears and many heart-warming moments that will forever remain embedded in my soul. I learned so much more about myself and how I viewed love in general while in this relationship. Love is often complicated, yet it is the most beautiful entity life has to offer, and loving a younger man has a charm and sweetness you could not imagine!
Chapter One
If Loving Him Was Wrong, I
Didn’t Wanna Be Right
W ell, there I was, minding my own business at work, at a wack-ass independent record label, trying to make a dollar out of fifteen cents—at least that’s how Tupac put it. It was a typical day at the label. I was making phone calls, doing research, contacting radio stations, the entire nine. It was after lunch, and my mind was on many things, but love was not one of them, at least not on this particular day. Then bam —in walks my future baby daddy. He was so tantalizing and alluring. I just had to taste him. I just had to have him, all of him.
Damn, he looked hella young and delicious. It was at that point that I should have turned and kept it movin’. No, I wanted some excitement. I wanted gangsta love. Hell, I just liked what I saw. Fuck it. But I’m not really sure; if I knew then what I know now, I might not have written this story! My younger man now got me saying crazy slang shit. When you’re dating a younger man, you gotta get used to phrases like my baby daddy
and baby mama
or momie.
Me, being from somewhat on the other side of the tracks and all, meaning a college graduate, having worked at radio and television stations and advertising companies—oh yeah, I was definitely on the other side of the tracks—I still had a little swagger! Swagger , another word associated with dating a younger man.
So, as I said, my future baby daddy and his cousin walked into the label with a homemade rap CD they put together in the backyard. I did give them credit because they at least had a CD. Of course, I was the promotions manager, so I had to be in on the meeting. By the time I walked into the room, I saw these two very young-looking dudes. I was thinking, More wannabes. Hope they got some kinda skill. Now, the short one reminded me of Krupt for some reason. He was sexy and rugged in his own style. He didn’t just sit in the chair. He was lying back and down in the chair. Hell, I don’t know if it was because the dude was so short or if it was just his thang. Hell, I’m not prejudiced—big, small, short, tall, hell, ya girl likes them all. Now, his cousin, however, was sort of a big brother. He was doing all the talking. Come to find out later that he was the oldest. He also talked a lot—and with one too many jokes for me; that was a turnoff. On the flip side, I thought it could have been him just trying to sell their shit. But I found out that was just the way he was! It was the older cousin trying to give me the eye and play action. I was like, No, man, I’m tryin’ to holla at Krupt.
That was my private joke. I was young, in my early thirties, single, and looking good still with the lights on! So, hell, I wanted to play too. I wanted some of that thug passion I had always heard about and seen in the movies. But looking at dude, I thought he looked like a baby! I said to myself, He might look like a baby, but I bet he’s far from being one. There was something about him that had my curiosity in overdrive. I felt like I just had to know something about him. Okay, I know I was a bit thirsty, as some may call it—cougarism—but, hell, why I couldn’t I have none? Shit, men have always dated younger. So, hell yeah, fuck it. So, what’s your name boo?
I was on some shit in my mind, so I thought to myself, Girl, you better slow your row. That’s a young dude. Then I said to myself, Why a sister can’t get a piece? Why a sister can’t have no fun? And then I thought, What if I do connect with the dude? All I could think at that point was, if loving a younger man was wrong, I didn’t wanna be right! Some might think I was thirsty. But, baby, bring on the water! As a matter of fact, thirsty is one of many words I learned from my younger man.
Okay, so the meeting was progressing, and I was still looking at this young dude and listening to their music. I liked it right away—and not just because he was my private thug in my mind already but because they had talent, and I saw their future potential. They had heart and drive, and they looked as if they could be marketable. So we talked to them for a minute and got their names and numbers, the usual routine for future rappers trying to get into the business. Then I gave them my card, introduced myself, and explained what I did at the label. The big cousin became instantly attached. I was thinking, Damn, I wanted the other one to give a sista some attention. They went on, and we talked a little about them after they had gone, but some of the other guys didn’t think too much of their music. I was thinking, Wow, you guys have been in this business for a while and you can’t even see talent? Me, I saw it.
After a few days had gone by, the big cousin called—for now, we are gonna call him Junior. You know I gotta change the names around, so I don’t get in trouble while trying to tell you my business. He was calling every day, flirting, and all that stuff. So I finally told Junior that the label moved kind of slow. They were not ready to seriously look at new potential artists. I said, "Maybe we can hook up because I have my own record label that I have started, and maybe you guys could be the first artists out on my label. I told him my record label was called G String Records. I should have thought about how I explained it to Junior because he
