    "H ELLO

CHIEF EBILA, a fantastic morning to you!"

Morning Ambassador! How are you today?

I feel great, thank you my friend! Do join us for breakfast. Ha there! I can see our brilliant professor of atomic energy walking with purposeful strides as always. Let me go welcome him. Professor Amatare! Good morning! So good to see you! You’re just in time for breakfast. Trust your lovely family is in good health?

A wonderful morning to you Ambassador! So good to see you too! Yes, the family is doing well in spite the economy situation in the country. The professor quipped.

You can say that again! Even the multimillionaires are complaining these days. Imagine that! What do they want the so-called ordinary people to do or say? Gbuke asked, spreading his arms wide.

They are to keep saying God-dey! Chief Ebila responded and everyone laughed.

The men knew that the economic downturn in the country was no laughing matter. Their conversation was lively as they analyzed various critical sectors like the ten-year economic rolling plan, the short and long-term energy blueprint, the job creation master plan and inclusion of the secession clause in the amended constitution of the country.

The ten year economic rolling plan could never be successfully implemented, as a result of the so many problems that I see mitigating against its success. said Gbuke.

You are right! Responded Professor Amatare. There’s the problem of corruption, lack of implementable feasibility studies and project analysis as well as effective coordination of development efforts, lack of suitable economic and political environment…

Aaaa Prof! Very professorial and long exposition…! In my opinion, the local communities and the private sectors were not consulted, neither were they involved in the planning efforts and plan implementation issues. Chief Ebila said and everyone laughed. ..And instead of looking for ways to eliminate these problems, our administrators go ahead to run their government on emergency basis and these emergency plans eventually result in a wobbling economy. He concluded.

Hmm! I hope the job creation master plan would be implemented so the confidence of Nigerians in the government can be restored and our economy put into hyperactive and ….

Haa! There you go again Professor Amatare exclaimed Gbuke.

There was no doubt that these were highly patriotic individuals who only wanted the best for their country. With the serving of breakfast however, the discussions became subdued.

The above was a normal occurrence at any of the residences of ambassador emeritus Zipude Gbuke. He was never short of ideas and usually engaged his guests in animated discussions and debates. Though not stupendously rich, his exposure as a career diplomat who had served in every continent without blemish endeared him to people from all spectrums of society. It was therefore common to see business, professional, as well as political personages milling around his expansive compound in Abuja, as early as eight in the morning most days. This scene was replicated in his modest homes in Lagos and Ndioro whenever he visited those locations.

With the above scenario, it was no surprise that house helps were employed to enable Mrs. Gbuke handle their homes more efficiently. In spite of the domestic assistants, she still devoted most of her time caring for the family’s eight children until the last child got enrolled in a boarding school. It was only after this and in order not to be caught in the so-called empty nest syndrome that she decided, with the help and encouragement of her husband, to start a textile business in Lagos. She traveled to India and Austria several times to broker sole distributorship arrangements with major manufacturers. The chief executives were happy to do business with her because of her proven integrity.

She made such a success of the business that, many who predicted failure even before the first shop opened were quite shocked. They assumed that haven lived a sheltered life as a fulltime homemaker for so many years, getting into a demanding business would prove too much for her. The doubters were even more amazed when she opened five new branches within the first two years of starting her company!

One fine evening while relaxing in their living room, the ambassador told his wife about how proud he was of her success.

Who would have thought that my little homemaker was such a dynamic and astute business woman? To tell you the truth, many persons, including your devoted husband here did not believe you could make it. He said, smiling. Mrs. Gbuke laughed and clapped her hands before responding.

I cannot pretend that your true confession is coming as a surprise. It is natural to assume the worst of someone when that person had not been given the opportunity to exhibit hidden or dormant talents. There’s nothing like a hard challenge to bring out the best in people.

So true my dear wife! So true! I am truly proud of what you have achieved. I dare say, you are wealthier than your retiree husband and I do not like that at all! He added, shaking his head enthusiastically.

It is all due to your unflinching support, my dear. I am indeed a very lucky woman to have a husband and partner such as you. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing in me. She said, embracing him warmly.

At that point, he told her that he felt it was time for him to move to his ancestral home, Ndioro. The information came as a surprise and her immediate response clearly showed this.

What do you mean, move to your village! Why and what purpose will it serve? Are you not happy living here? …Then, there’s my business to consider you know! How will you keep yourself occupied and.? He held up a finger and smiled faintly before replying.

Dear first lady of my heart! For your information, my ancestral home is a town and not a village! Secondly, you know that I am a leader in the community and more and more people are beginning to seek my opinion on important matters. Thirdly, I have no intention of asking you to stop running your business, which would be foolish and you would not even oblige if I made such a demand anyway. It is perfectly okay for you to remain here in Lagos. After all, when the children are on holidays, they may not want to spend all the time out of the city. My plan is to have us exchange visits from time to time and with our trusted cook of fifteen years Atu and all the other assistants, you know I will be well cared for. He concluded, squeezing his wife’s hands tenderly.

Though not totally satisfied with her husband’s explanation, Mrs. Gbuke thought it wise not to make a big thing about the matter. Gbuke later tickled his wife, jokingly punching her waist and teased.

I thought you wanted to raise the issue of another woman. I tell you dear, you have earned greater respect from me by not bringing up such a ridiculous subject. She frankly did not consider the so-called other woman as a factor at all, so the statement came to her as a surprise and she could only say,

"Thank you dear but that was far from my thoughts! You
