    MY SUNDAY KIND OF LOVE

This my first day of becoming an adult to leave school and all my child-hood ways behind me. It is from the high school that I loved for the last four years. . .my graduation in 1948. The teachers were great and really forced us to use our brains as the last of the 1930 Great Depression years children who entered into the second Great World War of our country. Yes, we had to face a lot of loss of our men, many fathers died, many fathers drank their sorrows away, many fathers just abandoned their families into obscurity. But then we had persevering mothers who carried the ball and worked in war manufacturing plants building materiel necessary to supply our military men with their ammunition and equipment to fight the enemy.

But now the war is over with new ideas, new electronic office equipment, everything including medicines to cure illnesses previously not available and as the years passed on even more amazing new inventions with unbelievable automobiles, home appliances, toys, and who could believe such a thing as television in the home, computers in the home and offices, many, many other hand held gadgets as we called them telephones, utubes, calculators, just so many games, facebook, electronic books, and so on.

As the world turns so do people. Everyone was involved with all the new stuff and I had to learn as they appeared. I was amazed at all the new types of equipment in offices that I knew nothing about but being young I learned quickly.

A few days after graduation my mother allowed me to sleep in for a while then she reminded me that it was time I was to look for a job. I was awarded a Special Certificate for Excellence in shorthand and typing and a six month certificate to a secretarial school for training to be an executive secretary with special skills in courtesy, office neatness, making appointments, catering to your boss, introducing his visitors and presenting them with beverages, etc. I had to learn all of this before leaving the school and applying for a suitable job with equitable salary conducive to an executive secretary including benefits.

After completing my six month training period I was ready to attack the business world. My first day out I was dressed properly in a lovely new suit, blouse, hat, purse, patent leather high-heeled shoes, my new ivory leather gloves, and I with a very confident walk entered my first interview. It was the company of a famous moving picture ‘house’. My interviewer was a corpulent sixty-year old man with a big stinky cigar in his mouth. He asked me to be seated. He asked his questions and then asked me to remove my jacket, to stand up and make a full turn around while he gaped at my fully breasted blouse he asked my age. When I told him I was 18 years old. he said, I would love to see you when you are twenty-five. So being a smart mouth, I said, All of this for $38. a week? You can keep your job. And I walked out. Well, that was my first experience in the business world. I knew from now on I must be more selective for job interviews. I had two more to go before the end of day. Better hurry.

The job was not that interesting to me being a plumbing parts distributor. It was way downtown, much too far for subway traveling for me. I rushed to my last interview for the day which was more to my liking. The office was in midtown, a nice area, the office was very modern with all kinds of modern equipment, pleasant looking people and a secretary who was dressed properly and very pleasant. She introduced herself as Ms. Adams, told me Mr. Bridges would be available shortly and to be seated, asking me if I wanted a beverage. I declined fearing I would spill it on myself. I waited patiently until Mr. Bridges was available to meet me. When he was free, Ms. Adams asked me to come in as she opened the door, then introduced me to Mr.Michael Bridges.

Mr. Bridges was a tall, well-built man, not particularly handsome, but not bad looking. He smiled and told me to be seated, I did. He asked me all about my special training and what I could contribute to his Blue Yonder Book Publishing Company. I expressed to him all my school training and merits from high school, and this was my first job hunting experience, my age and all the information that was necessary for him to know about me. He seemed very pleased and proceeded to tell me all about the company and what would be entailed working as his personal secretary. It sounded possible and interesting especially when he announced that the job paid $100. a week with benefits. That was excellent for a first job without experience. I told him I had another interview tomorrow. Mr. Bridges said he understood but to seriously consider his offer. I thought I certainly will. On the way home I thought seriously that I wanted the job just offered to me. I cancelled the next day’s list of interviews and decided to take the higher paying job with Mr. Bridges. I called in at ten o’clock saying I would like to see Mr. Bridges about accepting his job offer. Ms. Adams said he would be most pleased to talk to her again.

After we spoke briefly about my accepting his offer he was more than pleased. Ms. Adams was leaving at the end of that week and he would like her to begin the Monday after to fill out the forms for her employment. And for Ms. Adams to introduce Ms. Demianne Stanton to the office staff as Mr. Bridges’ new executive secretary. That really sounded important to Demi as she was called.

So Monday was her new beginning and she was looking forward to it with much enthusiasm to please. She will find out how much she will have to please as her days go on. Hang on there, Demi!

    MY JOB DESCRIPTION

Mr. Bridges asked me to come into his office with my steno pad for his three hour morning session of dictation. I was fully prepared for action as I was really anxious to please him. We sat for the promised lengthy session. When he was finished he asked me to have lunch with him as he had many important things to discuss with me. I agreed and he took me to the executive dining room of the company where he had a private table just for himself and guests. The food was really excellent and I was invited to use his private table anytime it was open.

Over a very delicious meal he told me his life story up to the present date. Mainly he talked about his five year old daughter, the apple of his eye, his ill wife who suffers from multiple sclerosis for most of their married life in which she spends her days sitting in a deluxe type wheel chair. He devotes the five weekdays with his wife, to be referred to as Mrs. Bridges at all times, and his daughter whose name is Angela. The weekends are his to do as he pleases which is mostly spent at his country club playing golf during the day and evenings playing cards and having his meals there. This suits his family well as he does work very hard and needs some time for himself.

He further explained he has a private airplane which he uses only for business purposes, has a few private condominiums across the United States where he has offices and occasionally will spend his days for conferences. Mr. Bridges added that at times he will ask me to travel with him, but I will always have my own room on these trips. Demianne liked this arrangement and told him she was agreeable to his consideration of her privacy. He explained my salary would be justified for these trips. Demianne inwardly was overjoyed with the excellent position she was awarded and assured him he will be quite satisfied with her efficiency.

When they returned to the office after the two hour lunch there were some snide glances toward her showing indiscretion as to her ‘long’ lunch hour with her boss, One of the older women suggested that she mind her female manners towards Mr. Bridges as she might be judged as a femme fatale. All of this because of an innocent lunch with her considerate boss? Demi, as she was now called by the ‘girls’ at work, ignored these petty people because the position that was granted to her was more important to her than the idle office gossip.

I continued to travel whenever I was asked, to take my lunch with Mr. Bridges whenever I was invited, and took dictation from him behind a closed door, and specifically told my assistant to keep the ‘wolves’ from Mr. Bridges’ area while the door was closed. She did so without question or suspicion.

Mr. Bridges was an avid skier. One day he called me into his office, told me to sit down but no dictation. He was making arrangements to travel to his ski lodge in Vermont and wondered if I would like to join him and several other guests for a long weekend at the end of
